Nigerian Rotarian mobilizes fellow polio survivors
by Susie O. Ma The Rotarian -- December 2010

Polio survivor Ayuba Gufwan got around by crawling on his hands until his teens,
when his uncle built him the wheelchair that allowed him to go to school
and become a teacher.
In 2004, Gufwan, a member of the Rotary Club of Naraguta, Nigeria,
which provides free hand-pedaled wheelchairs to polio survivors like him.
George Camp, governor of District 7230 (Bermuda; part of New York, USA),
snapped this image [pictured below] in Kano on a day when 30 people
received their wheelchairs, which are made with bicycle parts.
“This girl was very shy, but when she got her wheelchair she just lit up,
and I was lucky enough to catch a photo of her,” Camp says.
A tour of the factory, in the town of Jos, inspired him to donate to the effort.
“It’s important to remember how far our money goes in these countries
, and how important our contributions are to them
and to The Rotary Foundation.”
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed on 3 December

Treasurer 1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2001-2002
Sergeant 2004-2005, 2009-2010
A great club man who will be sorely missed by Kenwick Rotary Club -
could be depended upon to be there nearly every week,
always willing to assist with sausage sizzles, chocolate wheels
and other regular fund raisers as well as with the big events -
where because of his unflappable nature he was always given jobs
that could be pressured but required attention to detail.
One of those quiet achievers that a club knows it can always depend upon.
A really good bloke who everyone regarded with affection
and who took genuine enjoyment from helping those less fortunate.
Recognised by the club with a PHF in 2004.
He took pleasure in presenting the Rotary Citizenship Award
at the East Kenwick Primary School every year –
a little activity he made his own.
In the years he was not Treasurer would always volunteer
to be auditor for a small payment which he donated to
Australian Rotary Health as he was a “ Friend of the Fund”.
In recent years was treasurer and active committee member
for both RYLA and RYPEN 9470 District Committees.
Attended many of these camps and was always a willing worker
setting up equipment and supporting the activities.
He also derived great enjoyment from seeing young people develop
and interacting with them during these camps.

Adrian Bowden

Adrian Bowden (9/8/1943 – 31/9/2010)
A much admired member of the Manjimup Rotary club since 26/7/2007,
so it was a sad day when the news came that Adrian
had lost his battle with cancer.
With his passion for horticulture, he always had something
to say about ‘beautifying the streetscape’ around town.
Using his dry wit, he didn’t mince words and spent a lot of time in discussions
with the shire passing on his expertise.
Adrian married Irene (also a Rotarian) in 1966,
first settling in Jandakot where they built up a flourishing plant nursery business.
Adrian was very highly regarded by his peers in the Nursery industry.
They had 3 children and 2 grandchildren.
Adrian and Irene “retired” to Manjimup but they continued to
operate in the horticultural field with their most recent venture
being establishing a Green Tea growing project in Manjimup.
Adrian had battled cancer for 13 years and was still fighting at the end.
All Rotarians will join with me to wish Irene
and family our deepest sympathy and support during this sad time.
We miss you Adrian.

NYSF
National Youth Science Forum

URGENT HELP NEEDED
NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM ..“ PERTH SESSION"
JANUARY 2011

Over 140 of Australia's top science school students
will attend a 12 day session in Perth in January 2011.
Rotary is a major partner with NYSF
and one of our roles is to provide home hosting for the students
for one day on Sunday 16th January.
It is emphasized that this is a one day (not overnight) hosting
where students are collected at 9.00am
and returned to UWA at 8.00pm on the same day.
It is intended to be a rest day where students just relax
and catch up on their laundry needs.
Not less than two students are hosted by each Rotarian family
and from our experience last year we will require 65 - 70 hosts.
Only Rotarians and their partners are able to host
and it is a requirement that at least one host parent has a current
Working With Children card.
Rotarian hosts will be invited and are encouraged to attend
the NYSF Rotary Dinner on Friday 14th January at Currie Hall at UWA,
where they will meet their students.
We now urgently require Rotarians to participate in the hosting event.
Please contact PP Greg Thurston if you have any questions or wish to participate.
Kind Regards
PP Greg Thurston

They moved to WA in 1952 were Tom became
established in business and they raised their family.
Tom joined the Rotary Club of Melville on 20th November 1960
(initially he was a bitreluctant as he had been an active APEX member prior to this).
After about 3 months he started to enjoy Rotary
and he will tell you he still thoroughly enjoys it.
He was instrumental in starting our Club
and was our Charter President.
He was District Governor (D945) in 1984/85
and was instrumental in the establishment of 2 WA districts.
In 1985 he was invited to join the International Project Advisory Committee
and later was the vice-Chairman of this Committee.
During 1987/88 Tom was Chairman of the World Community Service Committee.
He was involved in Rotary Community service in many parts of the world,
including water wells in Bangladesh, schools in South Africa
and projects in New Guinea.
Tom and Jo’ travelled extensively to supervise these projects.
Tom and Jo’ have been outstanding ambassadors for Rotary.
Tom has held most positions in our Club and was Bulletin Editor last year.
Tom and Jo’ are well qualified to say that they have done enough
and can rest on their laurels; but this is not in their characters.
They are forever offering there help, whether it be the Art Exhibition,
Jacaranda Festival or whoever can use their help.
The Rotary Club of Applecross recognised Tom’s leadership
and commitment to Rotary with
a Ruby Paul Harris Fellowship in September 2008.

who meet at 10am on the third Friday of each month (except January)
at the Railway Ladies Bowling Club in John St Kalgoorlie.

History
In July 1999 after a request from the Rotary District,

was a constant source of information and assistance.
Then District Governor Graham Brown and then President Bill Main
were also very supportive of the committee.
The Foundation club meeting was held on November 25th 1999
with 18 members being inducted.
Boulder Rotary President Bill Main (1999-2000) welcomed all present
and introduced ADG Ron Geary as the keynote speaker.
District Probus Association Chairman Charles Arblaster also addressed the meeting.
The Combined Probus Club of Kalgoorlie-Boulder was formed.
The Foundation Chairman was Frank Gray,
Joan Osborne took on the position of Secretary
and Betty Bowen became the Treasurer.

"Quote of the Week"

Bathroom scale
a lady noticed her husband standing on the bathroom scale,
sucking in his stomach.
Thinking he was trying to weigh less with this manoeuvre, she commented,
"I don't think that's going to help."
"Sure it will." he said.
"It's the only way I can see the numbers."

---------------

Seems that a tribal chieftain's daughter was offered as a bride to the son
of a neighboring potentate in exchange for two cows and four sheep.
The big swap was to be effected on the shore of the stream
that separated the two tribes.
The chief and his daughter showed up at the appointed time,
only to discover that the groom and his livestock were on the other side of the stream.
The father grunted,
"The fool doesn't know which side his bride is bartered on."
