Grow fresh food for Bali school

I am currently working with a small school in northern Bali

to establish educational facilities for the local children.

So far with the Rotary Club of West Perth

e have finished a school building (3 classrooms)

and a teachers office and currently are installing new toilets,

sewerage and running water, as well as gutters to collect water

into new rainwater tanks we are providing.

A plot of land adjoining the school has come onto the market.

It was previously targeted as part of a larger program

under which school children would be provided training

in growing food plants, nutrition and health.

Many school children come to school without breakfast or lunch.

This way they would grow their own food.

They will also raise chickens for eggs and sale.

The proceeds of sales would go back into the project either

for materials, seeds or additional food for the children.

To the upper village of Les there is no road access.

Villagers manually prepared the site for the 2nd school building,

erected the framework using materials carried up by han

and I then worked with the Rotary Club of West Perth

where I am a member to raise funds to complete the school building.

The students and their teachers are very proud of their new building

Apprentices shine at Rotary Club of Applecross awards night

The Rotary Club of Applecross held their annual

Cooper-Bromwell Apprenticeship Awards in May,

cognising two outstanding Building apprentices

rom Challenger Institute of Technology in Fremantle.

A highlight of the Club’s Vocational and Community Service portfolio,

the awards have been running for 37 years

in memory of past Rotarians,

and prominent Perth builders, John Bromwell and Bob Cooper.

Each year the Club calls for nominations from

Challenger Institute of Technology.

The nominees are interviewed by Rotarians against the criteria

of excellence in their field, and the potential to one day

be industry leaders, possibly establishing their own company.

This year Corey Drake won the Best First Year Apprentice,

Brick and Block Laying,

and Lee Sampson won the Best Third Year Apprentice,

plumbing and Gas Fitting.

The judges were unanimous in their decision

hat both Corey and Lee were standouts for their skill

and dedication to their trades

, and for clearly demonstrating the potential to reach great heights

upon completing their apprenticeships.

The award recipients received a certificate, a $500 Bunnings voucher

and their name on the Rotary Wheel.

An awards ceremony and dinner was held at the Quinlan’s Training Restaurant,

showcasing the talents of the restaurant and catering students

who prepared and served a three-course menu.

Rotary Club of Mount Barker

At the Club's last meeting it was with great pride

that President Trevor Mckenzie presented Chloe Bleach

with an Award plaque for providing over 300 hours of volunteer service

to the Mt Barker Community .

Chloe is working with the Local Community College

arranging the Annual 'Have a Go Expo'

as well as working with the animals at the Urualla wildlife refug

Chloe highlighted, in her presentation,

that she enjoyed volunteering for many project

and did not think it was boring, a toil, or hard work

but an enjoyment to appreciate the interaction

with people and her many animal friends

Helping the Salvo's

City of Stirling - Arts and Events people held their annual reconciliation walk

at Carine Open Space.

The Walk is all about building better relationships and creating a unity

and respect between Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islanders

and the wider Australian community

As part of our club's support to the community,

Rotary Club of Karrinyup (District 9455) members Peter (x 2 - we have a few Peters)

, Barry and friend of Rotary, Marcus,

used our Food Van to cook and serve the sausages provided by the City.

Tonight's meeting was an inter club meeting with members
from Cockburn, Kwinana, Willetton and Rossmoyne
joining Fremantle at their dinner meeting
which was also beanie and socks night.
Everyone donated beanies and socks
for the homeless in the community.
