At Rotary,

we are deeply concerned by the escalating loss of life

and humanitarian hardship caused by the war in Ukraine.

We’re using our deep networks and decades

of experience to take swift action in the region.

Your donations at work 

All donations to our Disaster Response Fund from

3 March to 30 April 2022 have been prioritized for use

providing humanitarian aid to regions that are supporting

Ukrainian refugees or other victims of the war.

Thanks to the generosity of donors around the world,

we raised more than $15 million in contributions

that are already helping provide people with essential items

such as water, food, shelter, medicine, and clothing.

So far, 221 disaster response grants,

totaling $7.0million in 28 countries,

have been awarded to support people affected by the war. 

The Rotary Foundation will continue to use the donations

for humanitarian aid in and around Ukraine,

and districts can apply for these grants until 31 December 2022.

Donations made to the Disaster Response Fund

after 30 April will be available to all communities around

the world that need assistance recovering from disasters.

Find out how Rotary districts can apply for a grant

from the Disaster Response Fund.

Now through 31 December 2022,

districts can apply for grants to provide relief such

as water, food, shelter, medicine, and clothing to refugees

or other people affected by the crisis.

Districts should work closely with local officials and groups

to ensure that the funding will meet a specific community need.

Rotary districts that border Ukraine

and the district in Ukraine may apply for grants

of up to $100,000 each from the Disaster Response Fund.

Eligible districts include:

• District 1911 (Hungary)
• District 2231 (Poland)
• District 2232 (Belarus and Ukraine)
• District 2240 (Czech Republic and Slovakia)
• District 2241 (Republic of Moldova and Romania)

During this same period, other districts

can apply for $25,000 grants,

and districts can combine disaster response grants

for frontline countries to fund larger projects and shipments.

August has been another busy month for ShelterBox.

Our response to the East Africa drought is gathering pace.

Some may ask how shelter can help during a drought?

Drought and the ensuing famine can lead to displacement,

as vulnerable people migrate to find feed for livestock

and seek food at distribution centres.

Competition for scarce resources can often lead to conflict,

driving more displacement.

Affected populations are forced to flee their homes,

often taking only what they can carry with them.

By supplying emergency shelter and other essential items,

we can make a real difference.

Luckily, we have extensive experience working in Ethiopia

and the Horn of Africa that goes back to the crisis of 2011

and we're confident we can reach those most in need.

We continue to work in Ukraine, Bangladesh, Cameroon,

Nigeria, Mozambique, Syria and Yemen.

None of this work would be possible without donors

like you, so thank you!

As of June, almost seven million people have been

internally displaced by the war –

with more than six million moving across

international borders to seek refuge.

There are estimated to be an additional 13 million people

stranded in areas affected by the conflict who are at risk

and in need of humanitarian assistance.

ShelterBox is currently working on three projects.

For project 1 we are working with two different partners,

to distribute a total of 12,000 mattresses to people living in

‘collective centres’ throughout western and central Ukraine,

10,641 of which have now been distributed.

For project 2, with our partner, ReliefAid,

we have focused on supporting people still within

Ukraine survive in buildings damaged by the conflict.

We have so far supplied 5,011 families with shelter

and household items, consisting of a mix of shelter kits,

shelter tool kits and tarpaulins along with fixings as required.

We are also supplying blankets, water carriers, buckets,

solar lights, and hygiene kits.

For project 3, we are supporting refugees arriving

at the border in Moldova with a portable assistance package,

including hygiene items and cash voucher assistance (CVA

Heavy monsoon rains and flash floods in early June

have submerged large parts of north-eastern Bangladesh,

leaving millions of people stranded or displaced.

Excess rainwater has not been able to drain from the

low-lying wetlands which were still saturated

from heavy rains in late May.

An estimated 7.2 million people have been affected

by the widespread flooding.

Our Rotary contacts in Dhaka have informed us

that most of the floodwaters have now receded,

but the damage to infrastructure and crops has been extensive.

A ShelterBox team deployed in early July,

and is working with Habitat for Humanity, Bangladesh

to scope a response project.

ShelterBox staff, community volunteers from local partner HEED,

and Rotaract volunteers conducted community training

in Sylhet, Bangladesh.

The training covered the proposed project between

ShelterBox, Habitat for Humanity Bangladesh, and HEED.

From here, the community volunteers will conduct focus group

discussions with beneficiaries from the target list of 6,000 HH

to better understand their shelter needs and how they

would utilise cash assistance.

The volunteers from HEED are from the affected communities

themselves and will provide a level of local knowledge

and understanding so that ShelterBox can understand

the needs and capacities of communities as well as possible

Ethiopia - Drought/Conflict

Following four consecutive below-average rain seasons

in the Horn of Africa, as many as 6.5 million people across

the region are struggling to meet basic food, water,

agriculture, and livestock needs.

420,000 people are reported to have been forced to leave

their homes in search of food and water.

ShelterBox have been operating in Ethiopia since 2018,

through our partner IOM (International Organisation for Migration).

Our response in Ethiopia will span across a 12-month period.

Within this year-long project, we will be flexible and respond

in areas which are currently suffering from a lack of funding

and/or attention by other NGOs.

We will deliver our aid in three distributions cycles

throughout the year, each targeting approximately

4,000 households with items such as tarpaulins, rope,

wash basin, jug, bag, jerry car, blankets, sleeping mats,

kitchen set and mosquito nets.

The recent detection of the vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2

case in New York, USA,

and isolates in several environmental samples collected

in London are stark reminders

that as long as polio exists anywhere,

it is a threat everywhere.

It also highlights the importance of vaccination

as the only form of protection against polio

and other vaccine-preventable diseases and the work that needs to be done

in our communities to encourage the uptake of vaccines.

Also, as the world gets closer to zero wild poliovirus cases,

it is increasingly important to track all forms

of the virus wherever they may appear,

including in polio-free regions.

The U.S. is still considered low risk for paralytic outbreaks

of polio due to the high level of vaccine coverage

across the population.

If a child has received the entire course of vaccines,

the risk of becoming paralyzed by polio is negligible.

According to the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,

92.6% of children aged 24 months are fully vaccinated

against polio, slightly below the 95%

World Health Organization target.

The best things countries can do to protect themselves

from polio until the disease is eradicated from

the world are to: maintain high vaccination coverage

and robust disease surveillance and be ready to respond

in the event of an outbreak to minimize the risk

and consequences of polio re-introduction

or re-emergence anywhere.

The world currently has a unique opportunity

to stop virus transmission for good.

Still, all parties, including donors and country governments,

must re-commit to polio eradication

by fully supporting the

Global Polio Eradication Initiative

(GPEI) 2022-2026 strategy.

This focuses on adopting an emergency posture

while generating greater accountability

and ownership from country governments

to eradicate wild polio and end

variant poliovirus (cVDPV) outbreaks.

Rotary, a global service organization with over 1.4 million members,

has been at the center of the worldwide effort

to eradicate polio for over three decades.

Every year, through our funding partnership with

the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,

Rotary commits $150 million to the global effort to eradicate polio.

We have contributed more than $2.6 billion and

countless volunteer hours to end polio forever.

Together with our partners, we engage communities

everywhere to encourage high vaccination rates,

immunizing over 400 million children annually.

More than 20 million people are walking today

who otherwise would have been paralyzed because

of our efforts and those of our partners in the GPEI.

The time for urgent action is now.

A new vaccine has been deployed –

novel oral polio vaccine 2 (nOPV2) –

which is more genetically stable to stop outbreaks

of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus effectively.

With sustained political and financial commitments,

the GPEI is confident that we can achieve a world

in which no child is paralyzed by polio again.

Throwback to our last dinner meeting

when we inducted our first new member for the year.

The speaker at our meeting last week was our member Wes Rigg who,

having recently returned from several months overseas,

told us about the highs and lows of his recent travels.

With alarming long covid-related health issues requiring hospitalisation

in a foreign country,

Wes offered advice based on his experiences, particularly

in regard to travel insurance covering health.

Prior to his departure,

Wes made a generous contribution to the

Rotary Foundation Disaster Relief fund

which was matched by the Rotary Foundation

and channelled into projects assisting the Ukrainian refugees.

His contribution has earned Paul Harris Fellow recognition,

which was presented during the meeting.

Our guest at this weeks meeting was Bella Gooding,

the 2022 Des Killick Student Scholar, at Como SC

who gave an update on her Yr 12 studies and challenges. All going very well.
Also as part of the Scholarship, Bella attended the RYPEN program,

and she shared some great highlights and experiences.

On Sunday, at the Darius Wells complex in Kwinana,

Tom Hoyer Ramone, Brenda and Dakota attended the final

of the annual 4 way test speeches

. Four students presented their 5 minute very different talks.

They were adjudicated by the people from Rostrum.

Well done.

Our participation and experiences added to an approach our Club

may make to our high schools for the 2023 year.

The Rotary Clubs of North Perth and Wyndham Harbour in Victoria

joined forces to help the homeless with clothing in WA.

Some weeks ago a member from The Rotary Club of Wyndham Harbour

contacted one of our club members to see if we could assist

with a donation of clothing that would be coming from the warehouse

that is in WA from a company called Fashion Biz.

Fashion Biz are in most states in Australia with offices also based

in different parts of the world.

They are quite a large company and had quite a large quantity

of clothing that they wished to donated specifically to the homeless.

The clothing is new however had been rejected by Fashion Biz

because of some minor defects.

After a few phone calls we managed to find a community organisation

that could accept this amount of clothing

and specifically hand it out to the homeless.

The community organisation was

The Margaret Court Community Outreach Centre

who are based in Osborne park.

We arranged for them to collect the clothing and needless to say

they were very thankful and grateful for Rotary considering them for this donation

. This is an excellent outcome of two clubs working together

on different sides of the country to achieve a positive result.

This week Patti Walmsley,

formerly a Rotarian with the RC Mandurah,

contacted President Jenni through our website.

Patti is now living locally and was looking for a Rotary club,

which is a good fit for her.

Patti's unique work situation as a tour guide means

she is away a lot and not all clubs are an easy fit for her.

Patti enjoyed the evening, especially meeting our club members,

and loved the amazing sunset view provided at our lovely venue.

We look forward to seeing her again, when she is next in town.

Last night the Club had a presentation on a mobile shower truck

for the Goldfields Community from Kalgoorlie Church of Christ Beau Spencer.

Great to hear his passion to assist those in need, especially our homeless.

to come along and socialise and enjoy a hearty 3 course meal.

We had a fantastic turnout and we all enjoyed the evening and food

. Our next dinner is on 29 November.
