As temperatures soar in the Northern summer,
droughts are having a devastating effect in East Africa.
20 million people are experiencing the most extreme
and far-reaching drought in
recent history.
People are taking drastic action to survive, leaving their homes
and livelihoods behind to try and find food
for themselves and their family.
Driven by hunger, they have nowhere
to live.
ShelterBox is responding.
We’re providing blankets, tarpaulins, rope, and other essential items
to help thousands of people build temporary shelter
in the Somali region of Ethiopia.
We urgently need your help to support
as many people as possible.
Our teams are also supporting people affected
by many crises around the world including Ukraine,
Syria and Bangladesh.
Please give what you can today.

Polio Detected in the UK & USA
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative has been informed
of a case of paralytic polio in an unvaccinated
individual in New York, USA.
Initial sequencing has indicated that this case
has a vaccine-derived poliovirus.
The Global Polio Laboratory Network has confirmedthat the virus isolated from the New York case
is genetically linked to two Sabin-like type 2 (SL2) isolates,
collected from environmental samples in early June
in both New York and greater Jerusalem, Israel,
as well as to a recently-detected vaccine derived poliovirus
from environmental samples in London, UK.
Further investigations are ongoing to determine possiblespread of the virus and potential risk associated
with these various isolates detected from
different locations around the world.
It is vital that all countries, in particular those witha high volume of travel and contact with polio-affected countries
and areas, strengthen surveillance in order to rapidly
detect any new virus importation
and to facilitate a rapid response.
Any form of poliovirus anywhere is a threatto children everywhere.
Pakistan and Afghanistan continue to be the onlytwo countries where polio is endemic
. Even here there we cannot relax,
with Pakistan having seen an increase
in number of cases again this year.

18 August, marked the 56th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.
On this day in 1966, in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan,
Australian soldiers fought one of their fiercest battles of the Vietnam War.
This day would become known
as Vietnam Veterans' Day.
We were at Ocean Keys shopping centre to raise funds for
Battlefield Blue, with RSL Quinn’s who have free poppies
to mark this special day of recognition.
A busy night at our Club meeting this week,
with lots of visitors.
Tim Davey introduced guest Yoshiki,
who is a past Interact visitor from Japan,
and
staying at the Davey's for next month, and studying English.
Susanne, our Como SC Interact Club Coordinator,
introduced guest speaker Kal, from the Interact Club,
who shared his life journey and experiences.
Also attending was Lydia from Como SC and Kal's friend Mitchell.
A great night all round chaired by
member Ross Sweeney.
A massive thank you to Cuprum Distillery
for hosting The Bunbury Rotaract .
What a great time we had, shared with
quality people (and quality spirits).
Welcome to Visitors 16 August 2022
It was great to welcome back John and Hilary Thraves from
Swanage & Purbeck Rotary Club, UK
for their second visit to our club.
They are so impressed with Perth, especially with having family here,
that they have decided to relocate,
hoping to take up residence in November.
They told us their Rotary club is located
on the south coast of England
near the Isle of Wright.
Activities include a Christmas Market and a Summer Fête.
John and Hilary have visited our Stirling Farmers Market and were keen
to hear about all our club plans for the year at the Showcase.
Membership Director Mick Rogers assured them they
are very welcome at our club.
Since Attadale Rotary started its appeal last year for blankets
and other warm items for the underprivileged
and those without homes,
West Perth Rotary has really come to the fore.
Including their latest donations yesterday,
they have now given around ten car loads of beautiful warm items
for PortCare in O'Connor,
with a promise of still more to come.
Projects don't have to be enormous for Rotary
Clubs
to work together for a common cause.
Attadale Rotary still get phone calls from the
general public
with supplies of blankets.
This happened again yesterday when a lovely lady
from Wanneroo rang Attadale Rotarian Ian Pittaway
as she had some more blankets to donate.
She also donated a large bundle last year and has offered
to
continue helping whenever she can.
Ian was very happy to collect them from her
yesterday
and drop them off today to Ervina at PortCare
along with all the ones from West Perth Rotary.
A full boot and car load, that she was thrilled
to
receive for those in need.
If you would like to help by donating blankets
and other warm items then please call Ian on mobile 0419 914 026
and he will be
only too pleased to collect.
Thank you so much to everyone who assists
PortCare
through Attadale Rotary.
