Multi-District Public Relations Seminar
Sunday 17 October 2010

Mt Lawley Senior High School in Woodsome Street, Mt Lawley.

Registration is at 8.30 am, with a 9.00 am start,
and the seminar ends at 1.00 pm to make it more accessible
for Rotarians from regional areas.
See you there !

MEDIA – UNMIXING OUR MESSAGE !

Whenever we get a group of Rotarians talking about public relations,
someone will complain that one of the biggest problems
is the refusal of the media to report on Rotary’s good works.
Certainly that is how it seems from our side of the fence ...
it is often difficult to get our message across.
However, we may be able to do much better if we
could understand how the media operates.
That’s the underlying theme of a special multi-district seminar,
Promotion and Marketing of Rotary,
being held in Perth on Sunday, 17 October.
This seminar, coordinated by the District 9455 and 9465 public relations committees
will take a fresh look at how the media can be used to inform the public –
and prospective new members.
A keynote speaker and people who work in media will make presentations.
The central feature of the seminar will be an interactive workshop
moderated by professional journalists that will demonstrate
to Rotarians how and why the media makes its decisions
on what is and what is not news.
Understanding how the media operates is the key
to getting our news in print or on the air.
Rotary Down Under, our own magazine, will be there too,
and there will be presentations on advertising, merchandise
and promotional aids as well as club public relations success stories.
Don’t be put off by the public relations tag –
it’s just what Rotary calls it.
This seminar is not just for PR officers,
but all Club officers and members who are keen to develop
and enhance the Promotion and Marketing of Rotary.
After all, every Rotarian is responsible for Rotary’s public relations.
Further details on directions, parking etc will be sent directly to all Clubs.

Please respond to:--
· your District PR Chair
9455 PDG Ian Murray iwmurray@primus.com.au
9465 PP John Feary pr@rotary9465.org.au
· or your Assistant Governor
Please let us know if you will be coming

Rotary Club of East Perth
WA Police Officer of the Year

Rotary Club of East Perth Police Officer of the Year Award

On Tuesday 5th October the 2010 Rotary Club of East Perth
Police Officer of the Year award was presented at a function
in the Burswood Entertainment Complex
The winner was Sergeant Paul McCormish
The citation for Sergeant McCormish reads

Sergeant Paul McComish 7566

AS OIC of Toodyay Police Station during the devastating bushfire
in December last year, Sergeant Paul McComish came to the fore as a community leader.
Toodyay Bushfire Recovery Coordinator Charles Wroth nominated
Sergeant McComish for his efforts throughout the bushfire
and recovery period to coordinate response, support survivors
and maintain law and order in the area.
Mr Wroth said Sergeant McComish had remained a reassuring public figure
throughout the recovery period and had gone well beyond
his job requirements in his efforts to support the community
despite an increase in general policing duties during the same period.
He organised road blocks and coordinated with fire services
during the bushfire response.
During the initial recovery period, he paid special attention
to protecting construction materials on property in the fire zone
and worked quickly and decisively to crack down on an increase in vandalism.
Sergeant McComish has since moved on from Toodyay
to take up a supervisory role at Wanneroo Police Station.
Sergeant McComish’s conduct and achievements in the past year
have not only brought credit upon the WA Police
but represent effort that is over and above what is required of him,
thereby exemplifying the Rotary creed of
'Service above Self'.

Following is a match report received from the Goldfields,
of a cricket match held on the weekend

Match Report

The Bugger-All Pommies Occasional Cricket Team took on
the The Rotary All Stars in the inaugural pre-Ashes Cricket Match.
The Rotary All Stars won the toss and sent the Pommies in to bat.
Their opening bats started briskly enough
and one had to retire when he reached 30.
The Rotary bowlers, including a former Estonian commando
who was very quick in the field and left to meet his girl friend
and continue bowling, plugged away
and bowled all the Pommies who then started batting again.
At the end of the allotted 25 overs the Pommies had made 111.
The Rotary All stars started batting very briskly,
opener Mal retiring on 34 having hit a lofty six when on 28.
The middle order continued at a steady rate
and Vella Moyle hit the winning run in the 21st over.

There wasn't a man of the match award,
instead there were two women of the match:

Nikki the wife of the Pommies captain who was substituted
for our Estonian fielder after he left
and caught and bowled her husband;
and Vella who caught a ball that was lofted and took a long time to fall.

Three players fell at the same point on the pitch
and the award for the most spectacular fall goes
to Athol for a triple roll with half pike.
Athol retired hurt and required a long lie down
and several cans of anaesthetic.

The match was a lot of fun, a great time was had by all.
A replay is proposed for some time in Jan/Feb.
The Rotary All Stars were lucky to have two South Africans
join the team who knew how to bat.
Rotarian substitutes will have to be found for the next match.

Your roving Rotary sports correspondent
( who also understands the several club sergeants are going to have a field day this week).

'Quote of the Week'

SMILE!!!

Cletus is passing by Billy Bob's hay barn one day
when through a gap in the door he sees Billy Bob
doing a slow and sensual striptease in front of an old green John Deere.
Buttocks clenched he performs a slow pirouette
and gently slides off first the right strap of his overalls,
followed by the left.
He then hunches his shoulders forward
and in a classic striptease move and lets his overalls fall down
to his hips revealing a torn and frayed plaid shirt.
Grabbing both sides of his shirt he rips it apart
to reveal his stained tee shirt underneath
. With a final flourish he tears the tee shirt from his body
and hurls his baseball cap onto a pile of hay.
Having seen enough Cletus rushes in and says
"what the heck are you doing Billy Bob."
"Jeez, Cletus, ya scared the bejeezers out of me,"
says an obviously embarrassed Billy Bob,
"but me and the Ole lady been having trouble lately
in the bedroom department,
and the Therapist suggested ...
I do something sexy to a tractor."

Down in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana,
Boudreaux gets a job with BP helping with the cleanup.
He reports for work and is told to speak to a supervisor about his assignment.
He finds the man and asks,
"What it is I supposed to do?"
The supervisor tells him to go to the animal shelter and clean the pelicans.
Two hours later, Boudreaux comes back to the supervisor and says,
"Okay.dey all cleaned.
You want me to cook some rice now?"

The history class was studying the Revolutionary battle of Saratoga
which was probably lost because General William Howe
chose to remain in Philadelphia.
The teacher then asked the class to explain this major British defeat.
"Lack of no Howe,"
answered a voice from the back of the classroom
.One early morning, a farmer was milking his cow.
The farmer was just starting to get a good rhythm going
when a bug flew into the barn and started circling his head.
Suddenly, the bug flew into the cow's ear.
The farmer didn't think much about it,
until the bug squirted out into his bucket.
It went in one ear and out the udder!
They hadn't seen their Uncle Max for over ten years
but every year his nieces sent him birthday greetings.
One year, they remembered how he had always
admired a set of military hairbrushes,
so they sent them to him as a gift.
A few weeks later they received a snapshot of their completely bald uncle
with a note that read:
"Thanks for the gift. I will never part with it."
