Health workers in
Pakistan go door to door administering the polio vaccine.
Volunteers in Zambia
perform a dramatic skit showing how malaria spreads.
These efforts may seem
very different, but they're deeply connected.
A global partnership
has mobilized millions of workers,
reached underserved populations and gathered
unprecedented amounts.
of health information in the fight to end
polio.
That work by the
Global Polio Eradication Initiative,
of which Rotary is a core partner,
is proving
crucial in the battle against malaria.
UNICEF estimates that malaria kills a child
under age five nearly every minute.
"The children are the most susceptible,
because they haven't
built up any immunity," says Bill Feldt
, a chair of Rotary's
first US$2 million Programs of Scale award recipient,
Partners for a
Malaria-Free Zambia.
And yet, malaria is a preventable disease
that many believe can be eliminated.
Inspired by the GPEI's results and equipped
with its tools,
health experts and Rotary members are applying
its lessons to malaria.
The information challenge.
To dramatize the importance of bed nets that have
been treated.
with insecticide to prevent malaria,
Rotaractors in Zambia dress up as mosquitoes
and act in educational skits.
It's a
creative way to reach people in an area with a lower literacy rate,
and it's based on a lesson from the GPEI:
To stop a
disease, you've got to dispel misinformation.
"When we began doing polio vaccinations in
Ethiopia,
this rumour started circulating that the vaccine
was meant to sterilize Muslim
children,"
says Jenny Andrews,
the executive director of
Malaria Partners International.
"Rotary was able to bring together a large group of faith leaders,
traditional healers,
tribal leaders, and medical doctors to do radio and TV ads.
to overcome that fear.
That's one
thing we've learned from polio: Instead.
of waiting for a problem to arise, we get out ahead
of it."
There's plenty of misinformation about malaria to
counter.
When health workers spray rural homes with insecticide,
the clouds of bugs.
that emerge can suggest that mosquitoes
are being summoned, not killed.
When bed
nets are given away, people may not realize they're free.
And many
people don't realize that leaving.
an infection untreated puts others at risk.

Headlines:
“With this initiative, we are filling a crucial
gap.
In the past, we were vaccinating children on the
move,
in buses, on
train stations and other transit points,
but the children that were being left out were from
nomadic populations.
This
initiative is a product of extensive research, where we mapped.
out
population movements and based on that information,
made mobile vaccination teams to reach nomadic
children with polio.
as well as
all essential immunization necessary for their health and safety,”
– Dr Zainul Abedin Khan,
the National
Team Lead for WHO’s Polio Operations in Pakistan
Islamabad
As he rode his motorbike out of the relative
safety of Bannu city
on a September morning,
Danyal Sikandri was nervous.
It was his first day on a new assignment,
and he was riding out into the district outskirts
with colleague Yasir Shah
in search of a reclusive group of people –
nomads.
Their task was to find nomadic settlements
and vaccinate the children.
there against polio and other
vaccine-preventable diseases.
Sikandri
has been involved with the
Pakistan
Polio Eradication Programme since 2019,
first as vaccinator and then area in-charge.
Therefore, he was no stranger to interacting
with people.
But with
this assignment, he didn’t know what to expect,
since he would be travelling long distances
to find
people who might not speak the same language,
might be unwelcoming or worse,
he could
end up in an area which may not be secure.
After
travelling for about 36 kilometres,
the team found a nomadic settlement in Domel.
A group of
families clustered together.
in makeshift tents made of plastic sheets and
cloth.
Sikandri approached the elders
and explained why they were there.
The nomads, who had come from Afghanistan.
and were temporarily camped in Domel,
warmly
welcomed the vaccinators in their midst.
As Sikandri
vaccinated 14 children in the camp that day,
his nervousness dissipated, and a resolve set
in
– to bring life-saving vaccines to as many
nomadic children as he could.
“When I met
them, I saw how different their lifestyle is,
since they are constantly on the move
and far from health facilities,” says
Sikandri.
“They want to protect their children from
diseases too,
so, they are happy to see us.
They tell
us that it is the first time that vaccinators.
have come to their tents to vaccinate their
children.”

That means we are very very

Come on up to OKSC to support
Rotary Mindarie in partnership!
with Quinns RSL for the Anzac Day &
Battlefield Blue promotion.
Together we can make a
difference!
With Anzac Day only days away
tonight we headed
to the Moora Museum for a walk down memory
lane.
Our guest speaker Arthur Tonkin
shared his knowledge of
the strong military presence
around the area in the late 1930’s & 1940’s.
It’s amazing to think at times
there were over 30,000 soldiers.
in our district marching from campsite to
campsite,
learning the ropes in case an invasion
occurred.
Tom Kelly recalls as a young boy
seeing trenches.
on the sides of the roads in
Gillingarra.
Thankfully, they were never used.
Arthur also shared a couple of
light-hearted stories of late night two up.
being played under one of the only
streetlights in town
(Cnr Clinch St & Roberts St)
and how the locals liked the streetlight
because it attracted the
moths and mosquitoes and kept them away from
the houses.
Thank you to all our guests and
the Moora Museum
for your hospitality and delicious meal.
Don’t forget the Gun Fire
Breakfast at 6.30am
at the Moora Performing Arts
Centre following the Dawn Service at 5.55am.
**The Moora Museum will be open
from 8.30am on Anzac Day
- well worth the look!
