Events in Melbourne, House of Friendship and more...

Melbourne is known for its big events,

and our city is enthusiastically welcoming.

the Rotary International Convention, 27-31 May.

 We’re excited to meet you,

and we’re creating unique experiences that you won’t want to miss.

— from when you arrive until when you leave!

First, if you’re hoping to find economical, frequent,

 and reliable transportation from

Melbourne Airport to the city centre,

you can get a 10% discount on SkyBus

(one-way or return) valid for up to seven days after the convention.

When you purchase your tickets, use the code ROTARY10.

 Find more information at

SkyBus - Express airport transfers.

Of course, taxis and ride-hailing services

are also readily available at the airport.

Melbourne has beautiful parks, gardens, and walking trails —

so join us Friday, 26 May,

 for a leisurely 2.5-kilometer (1.5-mile)

End Polio Now Walk.

 We’ll go from Federation Square

in the city centre along the magnificent St Kilda Road

and past many of the city’s finest landmarks

to the Rotary Melbourne Peace Park

in the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.

At the park, take time to find plaques commemorating Rotary leaders.

over the years, including Paul Harris.

On Saturday afternoon,

join locals and discover the exhilaration that.

comes from attending a match of our own.

Aussie rules football, or as we call it, footy.

On Saturday night, experience a different kind of excitement.

with our welcome reception at the Melbourne Museum,

showcasing Victoria’s finest food and beverages

as well as an insight into Australia’s history.

Learn about Indigenous culture, the origin.

and evolution of our life in Victoria,

and sporting treasures like the mighty racehorse Phar Lap.

For a very different food and beverage experience,

enjoy a sample of our culinary diversity.

through the Streets of Melbourne events.

On Monday and Tuesday nights at South Wharf,

you can sample the best we have to offer —

and you never know what other surprises we have planned for you!

Monday night also offers you a choice from an assortment.

of club-hosted hospitality events, each one unique.

Our final special event on Tuesday night

will take you on an exclusive

 Rotary express train to Flemington,

home of the renowned Melbourne Cup horse race,

for a night like no other.

This is your chance to wear your fanciest fashions,

as if you were attending the race.

You can dine on Victoria’s superior cuisine and wines.

while enjoying a three-course meal and have your picture taken

with a past winning racehorse and the mighty Melbourne Cup itself.

If you’re interested in service while you’re in Melbourne,

you can join a project in the House of Friendship to assist us.

in achieving our goal of packing 100,000 emergency meals.

Registering in advance will help us plan the day.

 and maximize your contribution.

Melbourne has so much to offer —

Rotary Down Under

Despite the headwinds of gaining members,

the Rotary Club of Mandurah Districts, WA,

has achieved a membership magic milestone.

So far this Rotary year, under the guidance of President Deb Atkins,

Membership Director Martin Sadle and an enthusiastic board,

16 new members have been welcomed into the club.

From 24 members in July 2022, less two members who resigned,

and Ivan Spalding, a charter member who passed away in September,

there has been a 71 per cent net increase.

This includes three members inducted in March 2023.

There are also 10 associate members.

How has this happened?

The club’s board undertook to connect with members of the

local business community to find people who had the time,

resources, and a willingness to give back to the wider community.

A networking meeting with members of the Peel Chamber of Commerce

in August 2022 initiated contact with business leaders

in Mandurah and the Peel Region.

These are professional, working men and women.

who wanted to do something in helping the community,

and were convinced that Rotary had the integrity.

, a spread of local humanitarian projects and, importantly,

 that members have fun.

community development projects around the planet.

As individual Rotarians we proudly participate,

thorough our local chapters in supporting

our local communities on a daily basis.

As a proud member of Rotary, and quite new to Rotary,

I am also a proud member of The International

 Association for Community Development (IACD)

 https://www.iacdglobal.org/ .

Monthly Zoom webinars are held where we discuss subjects.

such as poverty, homelessness, fund raising,

 natural disaster relief (Türkiye earthquake)

and refugee aid (war in The Ukraine).

Participants attend from countries such as

Japan, Hong Kong, Canada, USA, Scotland,

Kenya, South Africa, the UK, Malaysia,

 Indonesia and Australia.

A world conference is held in a different country each year,

this year the World Community Development Conference

is held from June 20-22, 2023, at the Darwin Convention Centre,

 https://www.wcdc2023fromtheedge.org.au/

I will be attending this conference in Darwin this year.

as a proud member of Kwinana Rotary and Rotary WA,

I encourage other Rotarians from WA to attend.

as it is a perfect opportunity for Rotarians to network

and share ideas with other community development practitioners.

 on an international stage.

Fleur McDonald is presenting to RC of Mundaring

on Wednesday, 26th of July and

Fleur has asked us to reach out to other Rotary clubs.

to see if they are interested in her presenting at their clubs as well.

Fleur is visiting from Esperance so it would be perfect if she can.

visit as many Rotary clubs as possible during her time in Perth.

Some background about Fleur

Fleur-McDonald-Biography-3.pdf (fleurmcdonald.com)

Fleur will also be mentioning her son Hayden - a pilot with autism

-  who can't do a presentation for us due to other commitments.

Hayden started the Facebook page "Wings without Barriers”.

and is seeking sponsorship to travel solo around Australia in September

https://www.facebook.com/wingswithoutbarriers/

The club feels that Fleur and Hayden's stories are worthy of promotion.

A study recently published by Dr Simon Wilksch

has featured on Mirage News 📰

His study highlights the impacts of eating disorders.

on both children and parents with findings

that suggest parents require more support.

"While extensive research reveals the devastating toll.

of eating disorders on the young person,

it has been far less common to investigate.

the burden on parents," - Dr Wilksch.

Dr Wilksch's position is supported by Australian Rotary Health Grant

funding with Dr Wilksch co-investigating eating disorder research

with ARH Scholar Professor Tracey Wade.

We’re thrilled to have our physiotherapy education team back in Suva this week,

 delivering the annual training workshop

at the Fiji National University to their final-year physiotherapy students.

We’ve not been able to deliver this course over the past few years due to COVID,

and it’s wonderful to be back.

The course involves 4 Interplast volunteer faculty

(two physios and two speech therapists),

along with local faculty, delivering a workshop focused

on hands, burns and speech therapy.

While they’re here, the Interplast team are also delivering in-service training

to local counterparts within the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva,

as well as with a number of other local organisations

 including Frank Hilton Organisation.

This program was made possible thanks to funding from the

Australian Government’s Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP)

and the Rotary Club of Kenwick.
