May is Rotary’s Youth Service Month!

Throughout the month, Rotarians, Rotaractors, and younger members

 of the Rotary family, including.

Interactors and RYLA and Rotary Youth Exchange participants,

celebrate the service, leadership development, connections,

and FUN of Rotary’s programs for young leaders.

Every year, over 350,000 young leaders participate in Rotary’s youth programs.

across InteractRotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA),

and Rotary Youth Exchange.

Rotary’s Youth Service Month is an opportunity to promote.

our young leaders’ local and global impacts

and the Rotary and Rotaract clubs that make these programs possible.

A seasoned runner might take water and protein bars on a long training run,

but girls and women in Afghanistan consider other equipment more essential:

knuckle dusters or pepper spray, so that when anybody comes close,

they can demonstrate they have something to defend themselves.

It’s one of the startling details in a 2019 documentary about

female runners in the deeply conservative nation.

The film is the culmination of years of work by Martin Parnell

, a Rotarian from suburban Calgary, Alberta, and an avid runner.

The ShelterBox tagline is 'disaster relief',

but we don't just respond to sudden onset disasters.

Around the globe there are millions of people displaced by other types of disaster.

Next month, the 20th of June marks World Refugee Day

and this week we are launching our annual Off the Grid campaign.

We aim to highlight the plight of those fleeing conflict and persecution.

, seeking refuge in another country or displaced within their own.

 Below are three such stories.

Vlada (right) was studying at the Ukraine University before the Russian invasion.

Ukraine - Vladyslav & Vlada

More than 15 million people have been displaced by the conflict in Ukraine.

. With around five million of them now living as refugees across Europe,

fleeing to neighbouring countries like Moldova, Poland, Romania and beyond

. Vladyslav and Vladsylava are one of thousands.

of couples who fled to Moldova.

where ShelterBox worked to support people displaced by the conflict

. In April 2022, they received ShelterBox cash assistance to help.

with the financial burden of being displaced.

The ShelterBox team sat with them as they shared their story.

Before the war, "We lived as normal people. We walked out to the park.

and other things; home, work, studying. Everything was calm and quiet.

We enjoyed living there. Life was good before the war.

Then the bombing started. It became, of course, worse,

so we had to leave our own home and move to Moldova

to find a way out," said Vlad.

"We have only one hope that the war will end soon.

But are hope is very small.  Our future plans are to go back to Ukraine.

We hope that everything will be fine, people will stop dying,

and that God will protect everyone."

Fatima and her children

Syria - Fatima and her children

Last year Fatima’s family were facing incredible amounts of hardship,

her children were enduring long cold nights, having to share

 what little clothes they had.

Neighbours would often drop plates of food around their home,

knowing that they might not have been able to afford basic staples.

Since then, ShelterBox, along with our partner ReliefAid,

have provided Fatima and her family with support, including clothes,

a carpet for their tent, a mattress, and hygiene items.

ReliefAid sat down with Fatima to ask her.

how this aid has improved their condition.

Fatima shared what the changes in weather have been like for her family.

“The weather was bad, and we were very happy with the carpet.

We felt warm and very happy.”

With her family in need of such crucial winter items and materials,

Fatima described the moment she received items from ShelterBox.

“What I liked the most is the carpet and the mattress,

also, the soap and the tarpaulin.

I did not imagine that I would get the materials, I was very happy.”

Fatima was overjoyed when her children received warm clothing.

“When they got the clothes, they were happy, and I felt very happy.

You helped us after we were displaced,

and you made our children very happy.”

Marie with her children and mother-in-law

Burkina Faso - Marie & her family

The humanitarian crisis in Burkina Faso continues to worsen,

with almost two million people displaced in the country.

Since 2015, armed groups have been fighting one another over control for territory,

driving displacement in a country where many people had already been.

forced to leave their homes because of increasing violence.

Marie is one of those people, and she sat down.

with our acting partner HELP to share her experiences.

“My name is Marie I am 33 years old. I have four children,

and there are six of us in the tent in total.”

Marie also lives with her mother-in-law, who you can see pictured above.

Marie arrived at the camp nine months ago,

fleeing her hometown due to the increasing levels

 of insecurity her hometown faced

. “Before the conflict, we lived well. Our house was in good condition,

made of banco [a building material, consisting of mud,

 water and other organic materials].

Marie was one of the many families to receive an emergency shelter,

 known as a Sahelian tent.

These tents are constructed from locally sourced materials.

and offer a more durable structure for displaced families.

who have fled their homes to escape extremist violence.

Marie spoke about how she feels more protected.

 from the upcoming rainy season:

“Of all the things we received, the [Sahelian tent]

was the most useful, followed by the covers.

We are no longer worried about the coming rain

due to the new shelter as we are well protected.

“Mosquito nets have also helped us a lot because.

if you don't have one, you risk of developing malaria.

from mosquito bites. There are the dishes too.

Everything we received was very useful.”

Join ShelterBox supporters from around the country and camp out.

on Saturday 17th-18th June, ahead of World Refugee Day.

Help ShelterBox raise essential funds to deliver emergency shelter aid.

to people around the world who have been left homeless following disaster and conflict.

There are rewards for hitting the various fundraising targets.

A busy Fellowship meeting this week.

Firstly, a Paul Harris Fellow Award (PHF)

to a great friend of the Club,

Peter Salleo, Deputy Principal at Carson Street School (CSS),

a long-term Community Partner of Como Rotary.

In addition to Peter’s dedication and commitment

with the special needs children at CSS,

Peter stepped up to take a leadership role with

Rotary D9465 Camp Inspiration for past two years.

 Peter’s wonderful experience and skills

with children with special needs

shone through and with a great support team,

ensured the Camp was a great success.

Thank you, Peter, your support was hugely appreciated,

 and this PHF Award

is most deserving, along with your dedicated service at CSS.

Secondly, we welcomed guest speakers,

Murray Patterson and Mary Brell OAM, both Rotarians

 from Orange Club, NSW.

Both Murray & Mary gave a great presentation

about the Rotary Dream Cricket program

which is designed to provide primary school students with special needs

an opportunity to play cricket activities.

The program has been successfully introduced in the eastern states,

and now seeks to be introduced into Perth.

Murray & Mary had a successful day with the program.

last week with Peter Salleo at CSS,

where the students were highly engaged and enjoyed the cricket activities

. A plan is to be developed to organise an annual Gala Dream Cricket Day

 involving selective local primary schools,

and Como Rotary stands ready to assist.

Thank you, Murray and Mary, for your passionate and informative presentation,

and appears to be a positive opportunity for Dream Cricket to be rolled.

out in selective primary schools in Perth.

Headlines

A key priority in 2023 is to end both wild- and variant polio transmission.

around the world is focusing on the

most consequential geographies

where children are at the highest risk of encountering and spreading the virus,

and which collectively accounted for 90%

of all new polio cases worldwide in 2022.

Northern Nigeria is one of these seven subnational areas.

that now hold the key to a polio-free world.

In Nigeria increased vaccination and surveillance efforts

have yielded positive results in 2022:

No isolates from the country’s main historical transmission chain,

the Jigawa lineage, which was responsible for most cases.

and international spread to many neighbouring countries in West Africa,

have been detected since February 2022.

There was a decline from 1028 cases as on 31st December 2021

to 168 cases as on the 31st of December 2022.

As a result, the virus is currently confined primarily to two states.

in the northwest zone of the country, namely Sokoto and Zamfara.

This presents a distinctive opportunity for Nigeria to interrupt transmission by

December 2023, according to the Expert Review Committee

for Polio Eradication and Routine Immunization (ERC),

the independent technical group advising the country on its eradication efforts.

Our Club is deeply saddened by the recent passing.

 of Tom Mwangi Maina.

Tom joined Rotary in April 2019,

was our Immediate Past President

and held the role of Foundation Chair

, but he was so much more than that.

Tom epitomised the qualities of a fine Rotarian.

and Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self.

A larger-than-life character as well as an integral part in our community,

Tom held positions on many organisations.

such as Midwest Multicultural Association,

Regional Development Australia Mid-West

 Gascoyne and many more.

Our Club and our community have lost a wonderful friend.

who dedicated much time to others, and he will be sorely missed.

Sincere condolences to Tom’s wife Irene and family,

Tom's work colleagues, friends, associates

and all who were lucky enough to know him.

Happy 39th birthday, Rotary Club of Dalkeith!

We enjoyed a wonderful celebratory dinner last night.

Thank you to Brigadier Brett Chaloner for being our very special guest speaker.

He mightn’t have recruited many last nights but the message of the good works

Thank you, Trevor, for the awards, especially to Bob for his philanthropy.

 Here’s to another great year.

The Rotary Club of Matilda Bay hosted recently.

the annual Mowanjum Community visit.

with an eclipse included in the entertainment that evening.

Mowanjum is a medium-sized Aboriginal community,

located 10 km southeast of Derby

in the Kimberley region of Western Australia,

within the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley

with a population of 311 at the last Census.

It was a perfect day as the visiting kids enjoyed

the usual kayak paddle on the Canning River,

returning to a kick of the footy, then sampled barbecued sausages.

and hamburgers expertly cooked by member David Royal,

with support provided by Paul Rumble.

A special thank you to The Good Grocer, Shenton Park

who generously provided a $150 voucher to spend at their store

and to Amar at the Meat Safe butchers at Crossways in Subiaco

for their specially priced and extremely tasty sausages

and hamburgers (recommended)

and the usual thanks to the Rivergods

who tell us there’s no better way to explore the great outdoors

than in a pollution-free, silent, renewable energy-powered kayak.
