As we evaluate a possible response, we urgently need your help.

People in Morocco are feeling the effects.

of a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake.

that struck late on Friday night, under the cover of darkness,

when many people would have been at home asleep.

With the epicentre located 70km south of Marrakesh,

it’s the strongest earthquake.

ever recorded in the region and could be felt

as far away as Portugal and Algeria.

More than 2,000 people have lost their lives,

with the death toll rising as rescue operations continue.

We are sending an assessment team to Morocco.

and working hard to gather.

as much information as possible from our sources in the region.

We're talking to local Rotary contacts and potential partners.

to see how big the need will be for emergency shelter,

and if ShelterBox is well placed to support.

Initial reports suggest the worst affected areas.

are smaller mountain villages,

closer to the epicentre of the earthquake, which will be hard.

to reach as roads are blocked by rubble.

Whilst we work to understand if we are well placed to help,

we urgently need your support. Your donation today will help people.

made homeless by conflict or disaster –

 wherever the need is greatest.

Rotary Western Australia & Foodbank WA

Rotary Clubs across WA provide support to a number of local charities

but the partnership with Foodbank WA is a special one.

Over the last few years, many charities, and organisations.

have struggled to find volunteers and donations,

with the challenges of the pandemic

and the changing face of the WA workforce.

For years now, Rotarians from across Perth

have been rolling up their sleeves.

and helping Foodbank WA to pack much-needed pantry hampers,

hygiene packs, and tea & coffee packs.

Rotary Clubs in WA also support Foodbank throughout the year.

with their food drives, such as Give a Feed and Cans for Christmas,

providing much-needed supplies and support when they need it most.

And you don't have to be a Rotarian to volunteer!

Foodbank WA is always on the lookout.

 for volunteers and donations,

and you can find out more on their website by Googling Foodbank WA.

Foodbank WA

Do you ever see someone and

just know they're a good person.

That's what we saw when the crew from the

 Rotary Club of Dalkeith

came to volunteer with us recently, preparing hampers.

and food and groceries for distribution šŸ™šŸ™

The Rotary Club of Dalkeith are taking their support even further,

 holding a Christmas food drive

later this year to continue helping families in need.

thank you, Suzie, for organizing the vocation,

Has your club had a direct or indirect involvement with setting up your local Men’s Shed, or working with your local P&C, CWA, sports clubs, council or other local community leaders and volunteer groups? More than likely, YES!

Congratulations! Your support assists Men's Shed, and other similar networks grow across the WA community. If you haven’t had a Men's Shed involvement, chances are you’ve worked with others on a project promoting family and community health generally, or mental health particularly.

Given the primary reasons why Men's Sheds and similar groups were established, and are now so popular in our community, there are opportunities for your club to consider undertaking joint activities during Mental Health Week in WA. This is coming up in early October.

A whole Mental Health Week program is being coordinated in Busselton-Geographe, with many local stakeholders — and your club is sure to know of a least one local group to talk with!

Australian Rotary Health (ARH) has had a focus on mental health research for many years, and now the prime focus is for mental health research for pre-teen children (12 years old and under). Research tells us this is the age bracket where mental health issues begin, so is a great opportunity to work with youth groups and families.

Is your local Men's Shed, P&C, youth group or sports club etc aware of the mental health focus of ARH? If not, consider coordinating an ARH awareness session with them. After all, the mental health and well-being of all their members remains as an ongoing priority ... and of course a prime reason why many exist, and why their people volunteer their time and energy!

With annual ARH Hat Days coming up (which are strongly supported by many Rotary clubs across Australia), we suggest you invite your local Men's Shed etc to become involved. It’s a great opportunity for community collaboration for a common joint cause! And have some fun along the way.

If your club has not developed a community relationship with a Men's Shed, or similar groups, this is the perfect time to step up and do so. The mental health and wellbeing of every Australian is of vital importance.

For any further collaborative ideas, support or information, please contact your ARH WA team to assist.

ROTARY CONTINUES KICKING GOALS FOR OUR COMMUNITY

On Friday I attended a Rotary Cluster meeting,

 hosted by

Rotary Club of Mill Point

with District Governor Ineke Oliver headlining

as the guest speaker.

Ineke gave an entertaining and informative presentation,

 outlining the many exciting opportunities

for Rotary Clubs in Western Australia.

I enjoy always catching up with the

 City of South Perth's

local Rotary clubs.

and look forward to continuing to work with them.

for the betterment of our community.

(I'm pictured here with representatives of the

 Rotary Club of Como

and with District Governor Ineke Oliver.)

The Rotary Club of Esperance has helped six.

aged care workers from Kiribati by giving them push bikes.

The workers, who came to Australia through the PALM scheme,

had no transport to get to work or explore the town.

The Esperance Aged Care Facility thanked the Club.

 for its generosity and kindness.

The Club is also looking for more bike donations for other programs.

Please contact Graham Mackenzie on 0428 823 966

if you have any unused bikes.
