Amélie Perfetti, Kevin Faure, and Christophe Terrand during one stage of the climb.

By Amélie Perfetti, Rotary Club of Saint-Dizier, France

A few years ago, two members of Rotaract from Paris, France,

launched the Climbing Like Ibrahim project.

Mini and Rachid had a friend in common, Ibrahim, a polio survivor,

who always used to say that for him, going to school

was like climbing mountains every day.

They set about challenging themselves to climb mountains for Ibrahim.

to raise funds for ending polio, so that no more children

would have to “climb mountains” to go to school.

They began by climbing Mont Blanc, in the French Alps.

Since then, several other efforts have included an ascent of Kilimanjaro,

the Inca route in Peru, the crossing of Corsica via the GR20

and the tour of Queyras in the Hautes Alpes.

For this sixth effort, those of us involved in planning this edition of the climb.

wanted to do something more engaging,

but above all we wanted to open this project up to the public.

Climbing Like Ibrahim is a fundraiser,

but it is also about telling our communities about polio,

about the need for immunizations, and about the work Rotary is doing.

With the project team, we decided to cross the Pyrenees, and as a relay: a first!

We divided the distance into18 stages. Each stage is a different number of days,

distances, and difficulty levels so as to appeal to people of as many abilities as possible.

We had more than 40 walkers, including members of Rotaract

and Rotary, club presidents,

 district governors, and some non-members

.

We set an ambitious target of €20,000, the same as last year’s.

To date, we’ve raised €14,000 but we are still collecting.

We have until the end of December to reach our goal.

We are planning even more communication and will be auctioning.

off the flag we carried throughout the adventure.

We have raised almost €40,000 since the first Climbing like Ibrahim,

a sum we have donated to PolioPlus.

Sign up and lend a hand, it's important! Last year,

Curtin University surveyed local government areas in the Perth regions.

This survey assessed the levels of mental health issues in these communities.

. The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale was “RED FLAGGED”

as a local government area of concern, especially for young people.

Byford Rotary, the Bendigo Bank - Byford and the Glades IGA have partnered.

with the Australian Rotary Health (ARH) to present a “LIFT The LID” walking event

to highlight the issues and to raise funds for further research.

Parents are encouraged to participate with their children,

to join with others and to promote the support for early intervention.

around Mental Health in our community.

Come and talk to the ‘Headspace’ people about options and opportunities.

The event will be held on the 15th of October starting at

the Byford Secondary College oval at 10am (plenty of parking).

There will be a short walk and a longer one up to the IGA in the Glades

and then back for a sausage sizzle and a chat.

Sign up, secure your tee-shirt and be a part of the solution.

The WA chapter of Rotary Means Business hosted a fascinating Q&A

with our two City of Perth lord mayoral candidates,

Sandie Anghie and Basil Zempilas.

The focus was on future, potential and personal perspectives,

 rather than the election,

and with Perth Rotary legend John Garland managing the process,

 everything went well.

Another win for Rotary, citizenship

and good local governance

Last night The Mogumber Hub didn’t disappoint.

What a sight! driving in from Moora

Walking inside we were greeted with smiles and plenty of locals.

 Wow their story is inspirational.

Great work Karolina!

It was fabulous last night to enjoy.

 our first Exchange Student presentation.

since Covid put a pause to the program in early 2020.

Our club has long been a great supporter of Rotary Youth Exchange,

and the meetings where our students present, telling us about themselves.

and their home country at the beginning of their exchange,

or their exchange year at the end of their exchange,

are often some of the most vibrant meetings of the year –

and Karolina’s initial presentation was no exception.

It was also lovely to have three of Karolina’s four host families,

her District Placement Officer, our Assistant Governor,

Karolina’s favourite teacher,

 our 2024 Outbound, Ewen,

and several past exchange students join us for the evening!

What a great night at the Rotary Club of Karrinyup!

Also at last night’s meeting, we met our

2024 Rotary Program of Enrichment participants Elena and Olivia

, who completed the May course and received their certificates,

along with Karolina, who completed the September course.

Yesterday we had the pleasure of hearing form long-time.

RCWP Member Bernie from Life Education WA,

who was sharing with us the current programs and initiatives.

they are working on to combat the issue of vaping in schools.

While there are laws coming in to help manage this,

schools are reporting record numbers of disciplinary actions.

being taken against students for vaping.

 These range from using vapes,

all the way up to selling and supplying them.
