Damage to buildings in the Atlas Mountains is both widespread and severe.

Morocco - Earthquake

A devastating earthquake, measuring 6.8 magnitude struck Morocco.

at 11.11pm on Friday 8 September.

The epicentre was near the town of Ighil, roughly 70km south of Marrakesh.

. Killing over 3,000 people, the earthquake has affected more.

than 380,000, mainly in remote areas of the Atlas Mountains.

Rotary International District Governor of District 9010, Saadia Aglif said:

“Rotary in Morocco, District 9010 and ShelterBox are.

working in partnership with Moroccan authorities

and other national NGOs to provide shelter aid and other essential items.

to people affected by the earthquake in Morocco.

ShelterBox is working hard to get tents, thermal blankets, solar lights,

and kitchen sets to communities without adequate shelter in mountain villages.

Libya - Floods

On Sunday 10 September 2023 Storm Daniel made landfall in Libya

 causing severe weather conditions,

including strong winds and sudden heavy rainfall

affecting several north-eastern areas of Libya.

The port city of Derna, which is around 560 miles east of the capital Tripoli.

and 150 miles east of Benghazi, has been particularly affected.

after two dams broke upstream,

releasing over 30 million cubic meters of water into the city of Derna.

The mayor of Derna estimates between

18,000 and 20,000 people have died in flooding.

·         A ShelterBox team is in Tunisia,

meeting with our response partner ACTED,

as we prepare to support people whose homes have been

severely damaged or washed away by flood waters.

·         Together, we are developing an aid package that will help people.

who have been displaced and are having to shelter.

in communal centres or with host families.

·          This is likely to include winter clothing,

which will be essential for keeping people.

warm as temperatures get lower with the onset of winter.

and other essential items like hygiene kits.

Distributions in Podusivka and Masani, Ukraine in February.

Ukraine - Conflict

With the passage of time, the number of refugees

in need of shelter assistance

has reduced whilst the gap in provision within Ukraine.

has remained widespread.

Therefore, we are now fully focused on supporting people within Ukraine.

The latest project, Project 6 aims to support a further 18,000 people,

focusing on those who have been displaced internally.

in western and central regions of the country,

as well as people returning to the eastern side of the country.

as fighting slows down during the colder months.

ShelterBox is working with local procurement teams.

to secure aid items especially suitable for the cold winter conditions,

such as shelter repair kits to ensure more.

durable shelters, as well as stoves

and firewood to keep warm.

Aid is expected to arrive in Ukraine in early October.

to ensure people receive items in time for the harsh winter months.

Jane Wake introduced Sam Thomas from Sam's Spares,

seen here with supporter Diane Lloyd.

Sam’s Spares is a Registered Not for Profit Incorporated Association

that saves unwanted e-waste from landfill.

Sam repairs and refurbishes computers, laptops,

 mobile phones, gaming systems

and other electronics and gifts them freely to community members in need.

All items are distributed through Sam’s Peer

– Partner network of Not-for-Profit Organisations & Charities.

Just nineteen years old, Sam has a passion for community, environment.

 and electronics.

He is also Autistic and has Tourette Syndrome but strives to overthrow the stigmas.

and limitations put upon his Neurodivergent community,

proving that anyone with a passion and purpose can succeed.

He has been strongly supported in his work by his mum and dad.

Sam told us that he is self-taught and leaned things by 'breaking stuff'.

With the project expanding Sam's Spares has recently moved

to new premises right opposite the Gosnells train station.

This has sixteen times the capacity of the previous site.

All of the people involved in the project are volunteers.

. Sam himself works three days a week to earn enough to provide a modest living.

The rest of the time he works voluntarily for Sam's Spares.

Sam has been nominated for a number of awards,

and is most proud of being named 2023 WA Young Volunteer of the Year

. You can read about these and also vote for him on his Facebook page.

Rotarians had collected e-waste for Sam to take back to the workshop.

If you have e-waste of the type listed below this can be dropped off at

Jacaranda House, 15 Queen St Gosnells on Tuesday 9am - 5pm

and Thursday 9am - 5pm
