ShelterBox responding to Cyclone Harold in Vanuatu
On April 6th Cyclone Harold made landfall in Vanuatu
as a Category 5 cyclone, bringing devastation to the northern provinces.
The provinces of Samna, Malampa, Torba and Penama
 are most affected
. It is estimated that up to 90% of buildings and houses
in Samna are either damaged or destroyed.
Communications are still down in most areas and,
coupled with the remote nature of many communities,
the full extent of the damage or casualties is still unclear.
160,000 people are thought to be affected.
Vanuatu is mercifully COVID-19-free,
and the government would like to keep it that way.
As such, ShelterBox is unable to send in a Response Team.
Our Operations team have been working tirelessly
to find a way to assist the people of Vanuatu,
working with the National Disaster Management Office
 and locally based NGO’s.
We aim to work with a local organisation in Vanuatu
who will deliver aid on our behalf.

FACTS ABOUT CYCLONE HAROLD
  • Cyclone Harold made landfall in Vanuatu as a Category 5
  • There is a shortage of emergency shelter items
  •  in Vanuatu and in-country partners
  • are turning to Shelter Cluster partners for assistance
  • Although the COVID-19 pandemic is restricting
  •  direct ShelterBox Response Team access,
  •  ShelterBox has identified a potential partner
  •  in CARE Vanuatu
  • Based on the need’s assessment, we are
  • looking at providing Shelter Kits (tarps, tools,
  • and fixings) plus additional tarps and rope, solar lights
  • . We estimate we will be able to help 3000 households.

If you wish to help families in need, please know that your support is changing lives!

Infection control has always been an integral part
of Interplast’s nurse education sessions.
With the increased need for effective hygiene practices
to prevent the spread of COVID-19,
it’s lessons like these that remain long after an
Interplast volunteer team has returned home.
Empowered through education, medical staff in our
partner countries are more equipped to prevent the spread
of the COVID-19 virus and to promote this health messaging
 to their communities.
With your help, Interplast volunteers can continue
to support frontline healthcare workers throughout the COVID-19 crisis.

The Busselton Geographe Bay Rotary Club
has donated $500 in vouchers to Jacquie Happ
of the Dunsborough Progress Assn to purchase food basics
for some of the many out of work hospitality workers
 in the Dunsborough Area.
Dunsborough businesses employ a large number of seasonal tourism workers
who are doing it tough because of Covid 19 restrictions.

Thanks to Ian Macauley for representing Rotary at the handover.

A big thank you from the staff at Bentley Health Services
