Meet Bilash, a sixty-year-old
carpenter from Nepal.
who suffered an accidental flame burn to both
hands
that would prove to have significant
repercussions on his livelihood.
Bilash's limited financial and
physical access to safe medical facilities.
meant he went without treatment
for ten months.
During this time, he not only suffered
physical pain and reduced hand mobility
, he was also unable to work and
earn an income to support himself.
Journeying 10 hours to Kirtipur
Hospital in Kathmandu,
local surgeon Dr. Bishal Karki and his team
were able to undertake.
a successful Anterolateral Free Flap (ALT)
surgical procedure on Bilash.
The local surgeons were trained
by Interplast's Country Coordinator,
Dr. Grinsell and the Interplast
team through the successful online
mentoring Independent Microsurgeries Program.
This program supports local
allied health professionals and surgeons in
maintaining and improving their
technical skills in microsurgery
and treatment through online training.
Sincere thanks to the Rotary Club of Kenwick,
whose incredible fundraising efforts enable
patients like Bilash
to gain access to safe and life-changing
surgeries.
For Bilash, this has meant
improved hand mobility.
and the opportunity to return to work.
In the coming weeks,
Interplast's CEO Cameron Glover
will be travelling to Nepal to meet with the
local surgical teams.
and World Health Organisation
representatives to discuss how Interplast.
can further support burns treatments.
Stay tuned for more from that
trip!
