submitted by Ian Pittaway

Back in 1997, I took a G.S.E.[Group Study Exchange]

 team to Turkey.

and I am still in contact with one of my hosts.

We keep in touch a few times a year.

and below is his response to an email.

I sent to him about the earthquakes.

The Izmit Rotary Club was one of our hosts when we were there.

Dear Friends,

We are all well. Earthquake centre is far away.

We did not feel it here in our region.

Some workers of our company had relatives there.

and went to their towns and villages.

The first two were very big earthquakes

and some towns are totally destroyed.

Afterwards thousands of smaller earthquakes happened.

and last evening another fault broke.

Every individual, companies, NGOs are trying.

to do their best to help the region.

Rotary. both Turkish and other zones are active for to help people.

Members of Izmit Rotary Club went to Adiyaman

which have been affected very much.

They took tents with them, built the tents

and give to the people who lost their homes.

There are so many people under the ruins.

Winter conditions make the situation even worst.

Thank you for your sincere feelings.

Best Regards,

Murat

Well done, Boulder Rotary Club for supporting My Home.

They have nominated to supply the appliances for one of the 18 homes.

Painting underway. Completion not far away.

The Rotary Club of Greater Geraldton has been busy with weekly meetings.

and hosting events already in 2023.

We've heard from our Mayor, Shane Van Styn - Mayor,

Rob Houwen, Chairman of the Mid-West Development Commission,

Shirley McKinnon from STAY crisis accommodation, and our club President Jo,

who presented Helen Reynolds with a cheque for $4000 to assist?

in equipment for Northampton Creative Obsessions.

We are very excited to see what 2023 has for Geraldton and our club.

Great Fellowship meeting last night with a showcase of our Youth programs.

This included our Como Rotary Des Killick Scholarship Awardee,

Georgia, from Como SC, and her family.
Georgia gave a wonderful presentation of her life achievements to date,

 and plans for the future.

A very busy and committed student,

including good life balance and community activities.

Congrats Georgia once again and all the best for your Year 12 study goals.

Many thanks to Earl and Ros Happ for our visit to Erl's affordable

house project at his winery on Commonage Road.

Such a pity the City of Busselton is using planning laws.

to stop these 2 bedrooms/1-bathroom units

from being completed and made available

for rent to people and families unable

to afford Dunsborough's extremely high rents

(Averaging about $600 per week

versus Erl's units at $250 per week).

Rotary Club of Batavia Coast, Apex Geraldton

and community members hard at work putting together.

over 1000 sandwiches for our local schools!

 Awesome effort everyone 👏

We would also like to thank Bunnings Geraldton

for the donation of these super strong crates

 to transport the sandwiches.

Big shout out to you Bunnings!!
