On a scale of one to ten, where is your club on its journey
of cultural awareness and understanding of
Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander people?
Perhaps you have been considering adding an
Acknowledgement of Country to your meeting procedures
but you are not sure how to proceed or perhaps not all members
are supportive of the idea.
Perhaps your club wants to do a project with an Aboriginal Community
but needs some resources to help with the process.
Perhaps members would like to be better informed about
the Uluru Statement from the Heart, the Voice to parliament,
a future Makarrata (truth telling) or a Treaty with Aboriginal people.
No matter at which point your club is along the cultural awareness spectrum,
Ros Marshall, Chair of the Rotary D9455 Aboriginal Reference Group (ARG)
is
available to talk to you.
If you would like to find out more about the ARG before planning
to invite Ros to speak to the club, have a look at our excellent website
The website contains a wealth of information about
past successful Rotary projects from across the state.
It also provides a manual for respectful engagement
with the Aboriginal community and huge range of other resources
to raise cultural awareness.
Why not invite Ros to be a guest speaker at your club?
Presentations are tailormade to suit your club’s specific
requirements.

The 2022 Global Citizen Festival took place in New York last Saturday.
During the event, Rotary President Jen Jones
announced Rotary’s commitment of US $150M to the
GPEI in support of the 2022-2026 Strategy.
Malta also announced its pledge of €30,000
making these two the first major funding announcements
before the pledging moment in October.
Pakistan is one of just two countries where the
polio virus remains endemic.
Challenges remain in identifying and vaccinating all children,
but data management software is
providing a way forward
No wild poliovirus
type 1 (WPV1) cases were reported this week.
There are two cases reported in 2022.
There were four cases in 2021.
One WPV1 positive
environmental sample was reported in Kunar.
The total number of
cVDPV2 cases in the country remain 43.
Kunar, along with the
rest of the country’s Eastern Region,
is part of one of three, critical cross-border epidemiological
corridors with Pakistan,
the northern corridor
specifically comprising of Eastern Region
and central Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan.
Case response is currently being planned
in the immediate area and the broader corridor.
The other two
cross-border epidemiological corridors are the southern corridor
, comprising Quetta Block of Pakistan and Southern Region,
Afghanistan
; and, the central
corridor, comprising southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
and South-East Region
in Afghanistan.
Of note, in 2022,
the
central corridor had multiple WPV1 detections
from polio cases and
environmental samples,
mainly from southern
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Districts along the
border of Pakistan and Afghanistan
in the three epidemiological corridors are at high-risk
for poliovirus transmission,
given the high
proportion of zero-dose children
and inconsistent quality of polio vaccination campaigns
in some areas.
The Pakistan and Afghanistan polio programmes continue
to coordinate
on surveillance and vaccination activities
through the Global Polio Eradication
Initiative Support Hub,
based in Amman, Jordan.
Sewage in NSW will be tested for poliovirus following
the detection of the virus in London and New York,
where an unvaccinated man in his 20s
was paralysed by poliomyelitis
in July.
NSW Health said it was working with
Sydney Water to roll out testing “as soon as possible”.
“NSW Health convened an expert panel last week,
which included experts from Victoria,
to consider the value and parameters of wastewater surveillance
to help detect other infectious diseases,
including poliomyelitis, caused by the poliovirus,”
a spokesperson said.
“While there is currently no indication of polio infection in NSW,
as a precaution NSW Health is developing
a wastewater surveillance for poliovirus,
building on the success of the SARS CoV-2
wastewater surveillance program.”
It’s been 50 years since Australia’s last locally acquired polio case.
WHO declared the disease had been eradicated from
Australia in 2000 and childhood immunisations levels
are at 95 per cent.
A new and exciting Rotary Club is being established
in the Perth southern suburbs.
Southern Districts Rotary is seeking interest from community
minded people who would like to give something back to their
community.
This club will be a satellite club of Southern Districts Rotary
and will get together monthly at a local pub in Canning Vale,
probably on a Sunday evening around 4pm.
There will be no requirements to have a meal
and the venue chosen will be child friendly.
There will be no formal Rotary procedures,
each get together will not last longer than one hour and members
can decide if they and their family then want to stay on
for a meal/drinks or head elsewhere.
The club members will be able to raise funds by taking part
in Southern Districts second hand markets run
at Maddington Metro Shopping centre
. The markets run every Sunday from 5:00am to 10:30am,
however your attendance will only be required once every seven weeks
. Members will also be able to find other projects,
both local and international that they would
like to be involved in.
Hopefully this idea will be of interest to past Rotaractors,
Youth Exchange participants and RYLA attendees.
Let John know at john.stockbridge@gmail.com if you are interested
in finding out more by attending an interest meeting at a local pub
in Canning vale on a date to be advised.

The Buddy Bench Project is a project supporting children's mental health
and well being in the school play ground.
It is coordinated by Kevin Saunders, an ex primary school principal,
through the Rotary Club of Como,
who approached our Rotary Club to be instrumental
in getting a Buddy Bench at Millen Primary School.
The buddy bench represents a safe place in the school grounds
for children who require support.
Staff and Year 6 Student Leaders will be able to offer assistance
to any children they see sitting on this bench.
The Rotary Club of Victoria Park acknowledges
Bunnings and Midalia Steel for donating the materials
to make the
bench and the Vic Park Mens Shed who built the bench.

So when the City of Swan helped organise the Worm Shed
to run a workshop on DIY fridge worm farms
we jumped at it.

A wonderful first event last night with the Ukrainian community
mostly elderly parents who have fled the war and are staying
with their adult children in Perth.
Some very emotional personal stories but, thankfully, also lots of laughter
. Really good to bring a little joy in
these stressful times.
Rotary clubs sharing information.
Talked to the Rotary Club of Cambridge
about how the company I work for filters the Internet in schools.
We chatted about the good and bad of technology
among our young people.
There were some funny moments as the Rotarians
realized they could have fallen for the same bad websites
that tempt students!

What a fabulous time we had at our 'An Evening at PICA'
event last night!
It's not not often you get the opportunity to hear
the stories behind artist's work,
so it was a privilege to be guided through the Out of Bounds exhibit,
a collaboration by
nine local artists.
We wish to thank everyone for their support.
All proceeds from the night will contribute to our youth focused projects,
including support for student scholarships,
provision of books and uniforms,
a driver education day at Kiara College,
as well as, various youth leadership
programs throughout the year.
