A modified polio vaccine, nOPV2,
is offering new hope in the fight to eradicate polio.
The reengineered formula has a lower risk of causing vaccine-derived poliovirus.
This means it is less likely that the weakened strain of poliovirus
used in the vaccine will mutate and spur outbreaks
in communities where immunization levels are low.
The vaccine first rolled out in March 2021. In the first half of 2022
,
more than 370 million doses have been administered in more than 20 countries.
World Polio Day 2022 and Beyond:
A healthier future for mothers and children,
will be held virtually and in-person on 21-22 October
in Geneva, Switzerland.
The event will highlight the status of polio eradication
and address the potential for community-based solutions
that go beyond immunizations to enhance the health
of mothers and
their children.
Following the announcement of Rotary's
pledge of an additional US$150 million
toward future polio eradication efforts,
Rotary International President Jennifer Jones
will join Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus,
director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO)
in discussing the state of polio eradication
and its broader relevance to global health.
Register now to attend in-person.
(Registration not
required to take part virtually)
The recent detections of the poliovirus in New York and UK
have increased awareness of the disease's continued threat.
Earlier this year, an unvaccinated man in New York
was paralyzed and poliovirus was detected in sewage in London.
The moment presents an opportunity to highlight
the importance of vaccinations as the only form of protection
against polio and many other diseases.
At the Geneva event, experts in polio, vaccines
and maternal and child health will also discuss
the benefits of going "beyond" immunization efforts
to invest in the children protected by these vaccines
and their mothers.
Building on the current investments will ensure
that the mothers and children saved from
vaccine-preventable diseases can benefit from other
preventative and life-saving services,
enabling mothers to have a positive experience
with their pregnancy and empowering young children
to achieve their full potential.
The event will be held in English with French
and Spanish interpretation.
With two weeks to go to the global GPEI pledging moment
in Berlin on 18 October,
the GPEI has been increasingly receiving contributions
to the polio eradication effort from
private individuals around the world,
wishing to contribute their own resources to the goal
of a polio-free world.
The pledging moment will provide the ideal platform
for public-sector partners to also re-strengthen their support
to achieving a
lasting polio-free world.
Canada has become the first country in the world
to advance to the second stage of poliovirus
containment certification,
with one of its designated poliovirus essential facilities
receiving a Global Certification Commission-endorsed
Interim Certificate of Containment (ICC).
This is a significant milestone in global efforts to minimize
the risk associated with ongoing handling and
storage of
eradicated poliovirus materials.
The Republic of Sudan closed a polio outbreak
on 15 September 2022. It had paralysed 58 children
across 42 districts before it stopped circulating
The District Membership Committee is looking for
enthusiastic members who are interested in coming together
to help start new clubs in our districts
The team will work with the an experience member
of the Membership Committee,
who has helped to start multiple Rotary clubs,
to assess geographic areas, demographics or causes
which may not currently be represented in Rotary.
The goal is to help that community start a new club,
without impacting an existing nearby club.
Rotary is such an amazing opportunity,
so you will be helping more people experience Rotary,
who may not have found their club yet or
who may not be able to access a club.
The commitment is about 1 hour per month.
Please email Samantha Fewster,
Membership and Club Development Director,
to express your interest in being part of this team
(samantha.fewster@rotaryeq.org).

Kim Hughes is a former cricketer who played for Western Australia,
Natal and Australia.
He captained Australia in 28 test matches between
1979 and 1984 before captaining a rebel Australian team
in a tour of South Africa, a country which at the time
was subject to a sporting
boycott opposing apartheid.
A right-handed batsman, Hughes was seen to possess
an orthodox and attractive batting style.
He was identified as a potential Test cricketer from an early age,
but his impetuous style of batting, and personality clashes
with influential teammates and opponents saw a
later introduction to first class and Test cricket than anticipated.
During the split between the establishment
Australian Cricket Board and the breakaway World Series Cricket,
Hughes stayed with the establishment.
Hughes’ captaincy record with Australia was hindered
by a succession of matches being played away from home
(just eight of his 28 Tests while captain were played in Australia)
and the necessity to rebuild an inexperienced team
after the frequent absence, and later the retirement,
of several senior players.
This placed him under extreme pressure
and finally resigned the captaincy.
In more recent years his drinking problems
became well known but his strength in overcoming
the problem is to be
admired. He is bouncing back.

This year we are excited to offer RYLA participants the opportunity
to complete a Certificate 1 in Leadership through South
Metro TAFE.
This Certificate has been running in
District 9455 for the past 4 years
alongside the RYLA program with great success
and with the impending merger of the two Districts,
it has been agreed to trial the Certificate alongside the District 9465 program.
Thank you to
RYLA 9455 Chair Tania Johansen for making this possible.
The Certificate is a nationally
recognised Certificate and offer participants
a unique addition to their CVs.
Past participants have reported an advantage over other applicants
for jobs as they have developed skills of self-management and team work.
Whilst many of the aspects of the
certificate
are covered in the RYLA program,
the actual program will not be impacted.
Participants instead will work online before and after the camp
to complete the assessments facilitated by Tania.
Students
will be given assistance as required to complete the work.
The Certificate offers a unique
partnership to bring our
younger community leaders the skills needed to
fully actualise their potential.
The total fees for the Certificate One in Leadership is approximately $200.
Your club may choose to share the cost of this with your
sponsored participant,
otherwise it is up to the participant to
pay this themselves.
We thank you for your ongoing
support with the RYLA program
and for embracing this new opportunity.
RYLA Applications can be submitted online at
https://forms.gle/LXeGw5rzz87wBwVw8.
Nominations close: 30th November 2022
