The two-day Global Malaria Congress being run over

the two-days immediately prior to the May 2023 RI Convention.

The two-day Congress brings respected malaria experts,

 governments, NGO's, corporates,

Rotarians and non-Rotarians together in Melbourne, Australia;

to share, educate and discuss how to Finish the Fight Against Malaria.

Malaria is treatable and curable,

yet a child still dies of it almost every minute.

This is the tragedy we must stop together.

I recently returned from the ShelterBox

International Fundraising Conference

 in Truro, Cornwall.

The conference, held at ShelterBox HQ, was a great chance

to network with international colleagues, old and new,

and learn about the exciting direction that the organisation is taking.

In short, the plan is to scale up our international programmes,

so that we can help more people, in the best possible way.

We can't do this without people like you,

so I hope you'll come on this journey with us,

as a valued member of the team.

It has been heart-warming to see the generous response

to our Pakistan Appeal, with over $200,000 raised so far.

As you will read below, those funds have already

 been put to good use.

There is news from Ethiopia and Ukraine,

whilst work continues in Cameroon, Mozambique, Nigeria,

 Somalia, Syria and Yemen.

There's also a heads-up about this year's Giving Day

and an offer to write an online will for free -

did you know that 70% of adults don't have a will?

Mike Greenslade
CEO ShelterBox Australia

Since mid-June, Pakistan has been overwhelmed by severe monsoon rains

 and flooding.

The authorities have reported a 150% increase in rain in 2022,

 compared with the 30-year average.

Waterways that feed the main Indus River that runs through Pakistan

have burst their banks, flooding large areas of dry land,

and leaving people in desperate need of water, food,

medicine, and shelter

. Over 110 districts have been declared ‘calamity hit’

by the Government and many are calling the flooding a

climate induced humanitarian crisis of epic proportions.

It is estimated that around 33 million people have been affected

by the flooding (15% of the total population of Pakistan)

; more than 1,200 people have lost their lives and

almost 1 million people have been displaced.

Our initial response will focus on supporting approximately

1,200 households across four locations in Sindh and Baluchistan.

The emergency shelter package includes ShelterBox relief tents,

tarpaulins and rope, along with an accompanying NFI (non-food item)

package to support the same households with water filters,

water carriers, blankets, mattresses, mosquito nets and solar lights.

Project 2 will look to support a further 5,000 households.

Ethiopia remains a complex humanitarian emergency,

characterised by the ongoing conflict, insecurity,

and the effects of climate change which have all

contributed towards mass displacement and humanitarian need.

The conflict in North Ethiopia intensified in 2021

and expanded from Tigray to the neighbouring regions

of Amhara and Afar. Over 3.5 million people are displaced

within these three regions.

As many as 20 million people across the Horn of Africa

 are affected by drought.

The number of people directly displaced by the drought

within Ethiopia has increased to 560,000.

Project 5 is a 12-month project, running through to February 2023.

Working with our partner, IOM (International Organization for Migration)

, we aim to support 12,000 of the most vulnerable displaced families.

This represents a huge scale up on previous projects

due to the massive needs in the country and comprises

three cycles of distributions, each supporting 4,000 households

As Pakistan continues to struggle from the effects of the

devastating floods affecting parts of the country,

polio staff on the ground continue to

 assist emergency relief efforts.

In flood-affected districts,

the polio effort is supporting establishment of

critical health camps, to provide basic clinical services,

 particularly ensuring treatment of water-borne

and vector-borne diseases,

 and distributing water purification tablets.

All routine immunization antigens are also provided

to target children and pregnant women.

Staff are actively conducting surveillance for

communicable diseases, identifying nutrition needs

of displaced populations, and collecting and analysing

life-saving data to help target response strategies.

Polio programmes around the world have a long history

of supporting broader public health and humanitarian emergencies,

as was the situation earlier this year in Afghanistan

, following the devasting earthquake there.

At the same time, the polio programme is adapting its operations,

to ensure polio eradication efforts can continue unabated,

even amid the tragedy.

The programme is at a critical juncture –

intensive response is ongoing to stop this year’s outbreak

 in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Virus linked to this outbreak was last month detected

in an environmental sample from Karachi,

in the south of the country.

At the same time, the high transmission season for

polio transmission is now starting and this transmission

risks being particularly intense given the floods.

While detection of virus in Karachi is not unexpected,

given the large-scale and frequent population movements

between Karachi and the rest of the country,

 in particular Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Urgent efforts are underway, coordinated by the

national and provincial Emergency Operations Centres

 (NEOC and PEOC),

to continue surveillance efforts in greater Karachi

and further boost immunity levels through health camps,

to prevent polio from establishing a foothold

in Pakistan’s largest city which has historically

been a major polio reservoir.

Despite the extraordinary climatic conditions

and consequent operational challenges aggravated

by the collapse of infrastructure,

the programme continued with the August polio campaign –

 including across Karachi –

and re-adjusted the schedule in all accessible areas.

While the immunization campaign could not be conducted

in Balochistan and parts of Sindh,

the effort managed to reach nearly 32 million children

in the country, with health workers wading through

deep water to reach children with the life-saving vaccine.

Pakistan polio infrastructure continues to support flood relief,

while intensifying eradication efforts.

“Rarely have I seen such commitment and dedication

as I have seen in Pakistan,”

commented Dr Hamid Jafari, Director for Polio Eradication,

WHO Eastern Mediterranean.

Rotary’s service to the community is growing.

Rotary, one of the oldest service organisations in the country

is experiencing a growth, in Mandurah,

with new members joining to provide ‘Service above Self’.

Volunteering is strong in Mandurah,

and the Rotary Club of Mandurah Districts, supports

many local community projects, cultural organisations,

 sporting clubs and schools.

The five new members who recently joined Rotary

have a passion for local community service.

‘We are delighted to welcome these new members,’

said President Deb Atkins.

‘They are experienced professionals who have organised their lives

to make time to give back to the community.

Another four new members will join us next week.’

President Deb announced that the Rotary Christmas Wishing Well,

and the Rotary Family Day and Duck Race will be on again.

In recent years, funds raised from these events assisted

over thirty local organisations.

Should you be interested in finding out more about Rotary

INTRODUCING THE CENTURY OF CENTURIONS

https://rotary9465.org.au/page/the-century-for-centurions

We are calling on Rotarians and non-Rotarians to support our goal

of gaining 100 CENTURIONS by the end of November.

The Rotary Foundation provides much needed humanitarian funds

for Rotary's 7 key areas of focus.

By becoming a CENTURION you are assisting Rotary in their great work

around the globe including Ukraine assistance,

Polio eradication and COVID responses in regions that need it most.

CENTURION members can pledge $100 via yearly or monthly contributions.

 Membership is OPEN TO EVERYONE

and is a great way for non-Rotarians to support Rotary in what they do best

without the commitment of membership.

All contributions are 100% TAX DEDUCTIBLE,

so it is perfect for businesses and individuals alike.

November 2014

For the past four decades GP Dr. Raji,

majority of whose patients are indigenous,

has dedicated her life to two main areas,

 Indigenous and women’s health.

Believing in wholistic, culturally appropriate treatment, early diagnosis,

timely intervention and ongoing follow up she empowers her patients

with greater awareness of health issues and ownership

of the management of their health.

Dr Raji works from her practice in Gosnells,

via a ‘Street Doctor’ mobile van,

plus for those unable to access either of these, travels to the homes

of the elderly and those living a distance from the services provided.

A labour of love in closing the health gap has resulted

in improvements in the health and wellbeing of her patients

and inspiring other health works to emulate her, leaving a legacy

for the improved health of highly disadvantaged, marginalised

and vulnerable members of our society.

Dr. Raji is a living example of Rotary’s motto of

‘Service Above Self’.

A number of supporters of Dr. Raji, including her husband,

plus AG Jeremy Wood and Rotarians from the RC Cambridge,

PP Alan and Dee Mepstead were in attendance at this meeting.

We’re at the Rotary RAWCS convention today promoting

all the wonderful things we do with Rotary by our side

. Rotary members are wonderful people

- they’re a wealth of knowledge and they’re happy to donate time for a cause they believe in. We’re so great full that they believe in our cause.

What has Rotary done with us?

Well, built a whole ambulant toilet block and fundraised

for the fit out of our special needs unit for a start.

But behind what the public sees, rotary member have stood by us

as wrote grants, proof read those grants, advised, lead, mentored,

 connected and so much more!

At this weeks Rotary meeting members wore hats as part of the

 ‘Lift the Lid’ campaign

to raise funds for Mental Health

. We had to wear a hat that started with the first letter of our name

 hence Sheryl’s sombrero and Wendy’s witch’s hat!

With Monday being World Mental Health Day,

we also celebrated with our annual Lift the Lid on Mental Illness

hat day to raise awareness -

members getting into the spirit by donning their favorite headgear -

and a donation from our club heading to Australian Rotary Health

to fund Mental Health Research.

On Sunday 9th October 2022 Wanneroo Rotary Club along

with the Rotary Clubs of Mindarie, Belmont and Kalamunda

joined forces for two massive sausages sizzles

to celebrate the opening of the new Airport Rail Line in Perth.

The idea was originally floated by one of Wanneroo’s members

who has been working on the project for 8 years.

The logistics of the day were enormous.

7000 sausages and buns, 2 pallets of water,

1 pallet of assorted soft drinks, 200 kilos of sliced onions,

a refrigerated truck to carry it all, two portable cool rooms

to keep everything cool, 6 barbecues and approximately

60 Rotarians to make it all happen on the day.

There were two sites, High Wycombe and Redcliffe.

All goods were paid for by the Airport Link Project

and the donation will be split among the four clubs.

There will also be a donation made to the

Wanneroo Christmas Day Lunch that both

 Mindarie and Wanneroo are organising.

This was a great collaboration between the clubs

and a financial benefit to all.

An incredible turnout at the launch of the Airport Line

The sun was out, and so were lots of families celebrating

the new METRO NET Airport Line at both

High Wycombe and Redcliffe Train Stations.

Thanks to all the volunteers but especially the Rotary Clubs

who cooked up a storm with BBQ sausages for all to enjoy!

During these uncertain times it has been difficult for the

Rotary Club of Ballajura/Malaga along with CCY Inc.

to get our Ballajura Community Garden going.

But with the amazing help of local businesses, the City of Swan

and The team at the Ballajura Community College,

we have been climbing that mountain to get things done.

I do want to mention one particular organisation

that has continued to support us with Paint,

not only from the Wattyl Malaga Store,

but today we also had the pleasure of getting further paint

donated to us by Daniel at the Balcatta WATTYL Store

on Erindale Road. What an amazing company.

Today Sam Mesiti had the pleasure of picking up

this donation from Daniel in Balcatta.

Many thanks to you all in helping us achieve

and complete some of the amazing artwork our

young people are now involved in.

Rotary club of Ellenbrook took part in a couple of events this month
