EVANSTON, Ill. (October 18, 2022) –
Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
are renewing their longstanding partnership to end polio,
announcing a joint commitment of up to $450 million
to support the
global polio eradication effort.
“We’ve made tremendous progress,
but the world is facing multiple pandemics,
and vaccine hesitancy is on the rise.
Recent polio outbreaks in Malawi and Mozambique,
plus detection of poliovirus in Israel, the UK,
and the United States prove that if polio exists anywhere,
it threatens children everywhere,”
said Ian Riseley, chair of the Rotary Foundation
and Past President of Rotary International.
“Partnering with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
helps us ensure that children in polio-affected countries
get the lifesaving vaccines they need to be
protected from polio for life.”
This pledge comes on the heels of
Rotary’s announcement at the Global Citizen Festival
pledging an additional US$150 million
towards polio eradication.
Rotary is committed to raising $50 million per year
over the next three years,
with every dollar to be matched with two additional dollars
from the Gates Foundation.
This expanded agreement will translate into up
to a total of $450 million to support
the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
You are invited to join us for dinner as we celebrate World Polio Day,
with special guest speakers from the Post Polio WA Association.
Funds raised will be directed towards eradicating Polio
in the remaining two countries Afghanistan and Pakistan,
through Rotary
International’s End Polio Now Campaign.

The fear of public speaking is believed to affect

with Shil Shanghavi AFAIM on a Public Speaking Masterclass event.
Shil is a public speaking specialist, storyteller
and highly regarded speaker coach.
He is redefining the meaning of public speaking by
demonstrating its
value across all forms of communication.
October 19 at a meeting of the Willetton Senior High School Interact Club,
a ceremony was held to recognise the club’s outstanding
fundraising effort of $10,468 from its September 2022,
Amanaki (Tongan word for “hope”) Quiz Night,
for the benefit of the Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC).
ROMAC provides lifesaving and dignity restoring surgery
for children from islander nations in close proximity to Australia,
that is not available in those countries and its activities have recently
recommenced after being in abeyance, due to the pandemic
. President of the club, Mehvish Mehboob, received a Certificate of Appreciation
from ROMAC’s Western Region chair, Phil Cordery
and Mehvish in turn presented a ”cheque” for the funds raised to Phil.
The Willetton Senior High School Interact Club,
now has a proud record of fundraising during the past decade
, for charitable and humanitarian purposes
and its members are to be sincerely congratulated for this
latest outstanding
fundraising effort.

This Tuesday evening we had the pleasure of the company
of members and partners from the Rotary Clubs of Gosnells,
Southern Districts and Kenwick,
as we celebrated “Lift the Lid on Mental Illness”.,
at
the Champion Centre.
Guest speaker, Suellen Althaus, Centre Manager of headspace Armadale,
gave a very interesting talk on their work with vulnerable young people
and the mental health issues they face, along
with other issues.
Past President, Gail Sampson, gave a brief talk about
Australian Rotary Health and their valuable research
into
mental health issues for children and adolescents.
Most people wore weird and wonderful hats
and the winner of the “best hat” competition was Susan Howlett
, from the Rotary Club of Southern Districts.
(Susan is pictured wearing a large “hot dog” on her head!
She is standing next to Gail Sampson.
It was also good to have District Governor,
Rick
McDonald, join us for the evening.
Tonight we joined the Dirt n Dust Run group for dinner
to celebrate their third day on tour.
So far, in partnership with the South Bunbury Rotary Club,
they have raised $113 000 for mental health.
We were proud to present them with a cheque
to contribute to their fundraising efforts.
