Tanzania: Death toll rises as cholera spreads
Posted: 23 Oct 2009 06:06 AM PDT
An outbreak of cholera in northern Tanzania has continued to spread, claiming 59 lives over the past two months. Health ministry officials reported 60 new cases last week. A total of 3,454 cases of cholera were recorded in Tanga region during the last eight weeks, a health ministry spokesman said.
The most affected area was in Handeni District, where health officials have attributed the outbreak to ignorance of hygiene practices.
Seif Mpembenwe, Handeni district commissioner, said schools that had been closed because of the outbreak were expected to re-open in November. He said residents had been advised to dig and use toilets as well as boil drinking water to prevent cholera.
Health officials fear that the long rains due now could lead to more cases of cholera if correct hygiene is not observed.

Ghana:
inadequate water hampers school feeding programme
Posted: 08 Oct 2009 01:31 AM PDT
A recent research conducted by SEND-Ghana indicates that 45% of schools
in sample districts under the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP)
do not have access to water.
The Chairperson of the working group of Civil Society Platform
on Ghana and Education Advisor for SNV, Ms Adama Jehanfo
stated that although 85% of schools had been supplied with water by the programme,
87% of them are not in use due to operational challenges.
“The report reveals that 26% of the schools have no access to toilet facilities,
while almost 87% of the schools lack hand washing facilities”.
[An audit commissioned by the Dutch government and undertaken in 2008
by the international accountancy firm PriceWaterHouseCoopers,
found that after two years of implementation of the GFSP there was
“widespread corruption” at the programme secretariat
- IRIN, 12 Jun 2008. The National Coordinator of the GSFP, Mr Michael Nsowah,
has since been dismissed as the head of the programme,
according to a report on Joy FM radio on 22 September 2009.]
She noted that often times when Ghana school feeding is mentioned
a picture of children eating is what immediately comes to mind.
However, she said a lot of activities take place before the food is cooked.
“How the food is purchased and produced, the energy source used in cooking,
the type of water used to cook and drink,
hygienic nature of the kitchen , and the environment,
are all important complementary service play in the success of the GSFP, she outlined.
Ms Jehanfo was speaking at Water and Sanitation workshop under the theme,
“Chattering the Way Forward in Addressing the Water and Sanitation Issues Affecting the GSFP” in Tamale.
It was organized by SEND-Ghana and sponsored by SNV, IBIS, ActionAid Ghana,
TRIAS, PLAN Ghana, CRS, FONG, UWRAP, SMA, NNED, New Energy , IFAD and ACDEP.
Ms Jehanfo noted that water is critical to the GSFP
as no cooking can be done without water.
“Cooking with no availability of potable water has diverse negative impact
on health and quality of education,
especially for the girls as they are often the ones selected to go searching for water”.

Late News!!!!!
It is with disappointment that I advise that I have just been informed
by RI President John Kenny that he will not be delivering
the Dr Ken Collins Address this year.
He recently suffered a bout of pneumonia
and was hospitalized for two weeks from 16th September.
He only returned to work on the 13th October
and is due to undergo further medical tests
at the time he was due to come to Perth.
HOWEVER, I have managed to obtain the services of Past RI VicePresident
and current Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The Rotary Foundation
John Germ from the USA.
John is a prominent Rotarian and a fine speaker.
Kind regards,
Dr Ken Collins

News from Africa
Uganda, Kasese: unwashed hands cause cholera
Posted: 07 Oct 2009 05:41 AM PDT

Persistent outbreaks of cholera in Kasese District
have been blamed on poor hand-washing practices and bad eating habits.
This was noted at a one-day advocacy meeting for district councillors
on water and sanitation held in Kasese Catholic Social Hall on Thursday [01 October 2009].
Presenting a latrine coverage and hand-washing situational analysis in Kasese,
the district health inspector also the disease surveillance officer, Ericana Bwambale,
said washing hands among the people of Kasese ranged from 17% to 34%.
He named the sub-counties where people rarely wash their hands as
Muhokya with 17%, followed by Kitswamba at 18% and Rukoki at 20%.
He said Kyabarungira Sub-county has the lowest latrine coverage at 57%,
followed by Rukoki at 60% and Kisinga at 65%.
Kyondo Sub-county had the highest latrine coverage of 88%,
followed by Maliba Sub-county at 87%.
He said the majority of the people in Kasese eat whatever food they come across
without considering its cleanliness.
Since March [2009], 500 cases of cholera have been reported in Kasese
with about 10 deaths.
The Busongora County health inspector, Steven Bagonza,
said cholera cases have been reported in all the four constituencies in the district.
The district councillors on the technical and social services committee
blamed the sub-county health assistants for
the deteriorating health conditions in the district.
They said health workers were not sensitising the community on the need
to improve sanitation and hygiene in their homes.
The head of the district technical and social services committee, Mustafa Kikusa,
said all the sub-county health assistants should be summoned
before the district committee and explain why they are failing to do their work.
He noted that the Government was doing all it could to improve people’s standards
of living but was being frustrated by civil servants
who are failing to deliver as expected.
During the meeting, it was reported that people of Kasese were feeding
on animal offals and fish skeletons from Kampala
that have some times compromised the health of the people.
The furious councillors promised to move a motion to ban
the sale of offals and skeleton fish in the district,
saying they were unhygienic and partly responsible for the deteriorating health conditions.
However, some councillors on the committee,
especially women said that they would block the motion if brought to council,
adding that majority of the people in the district
were surviving on offals and fish skeletons because they were cheap
and some people cannot afford meat.

Rotary Club of Collie....Mainpeak Adventure Race
October 4th 2009
Hi Phil and thanks for the blog.
Unfortunately we managed to get the date wrong,
as the website previously said it was the "first Saturday after the October long weekend".
This year the Queen's Birthday holiday was gazetted in September;
I hadn't realised this had stuffed up the information given on the website
until after I had contacted you.
The long-term intent, is I understand, to have the race 2 weeks ahead of
Bridgetown Rotary's Blackwood Marathon.
The race is on for October 10th,

perhaps we still have time to correct this in a following blog,
otherwise anyone interested will find out when they follow the link.

Firstly, a huge thank you to all our fellow Rotarians who have called over the past 24 hours to pledge their support to assist those who have been devastated by the tropical storms, earthquakes and tsunami.

Whilst the lines of communication are either slow or down, we have included all information available at this time – we will of course update you as it comes in.

Again our sincere thanks for your pledges and well wishes, especially to our ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) members.
