ROTARY AWARDS COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS
At the recent Rotary Community & Business Awards, nine Community minded citizens of Melville
were presented with certificates celebrating their service to the community.
The Rotary Club of Applecross sponsored the awards evening which was attended
by family and friends of those receiving awards who were acknowledged
for their strong support of the award winners.
President Jamie Kelly said, ‘Those receiving the awards were nominated by members
of our community who want to recognise those unsung heroes
who willingly give up their time to carry out community service,
or provide additional extra service to their customers.’
‘Rotary’s motto is Service above Self and those citizens certainly
have that spirit of service in their community.
They do not seek recognition, but it is a measure of our sincere appreciation
of their continuing efforts that we can celebrate their achievement.
They are great role models for others to volunteer and participate in community work,’
 said President Jamie Kelly.
Rotary Community Awards were received by Marie Finucane
for her commitment to teaching young children to swim,
Gail Bowden for her continued support to seniors as a coach at the Melville Aquatic Centre
and David Harries, General Manager representing the South of Perth Yacht Club
for the extensive range of community support given to sail training
for the disabled, junior sail training and school sailing programs.
Rotary Business Awards were presented to Steve Storey from Melville Suzuki
for the attentive service in sales,
Michelle McAnuff from Brentwood Pharmacy for providing exceptional professional and helpful service,
Briar Kirkby from Fast Settlements for her continued service over 20 years in conveyancing,
Gerard Chia from Cafe Somervile who runs a family restaurant offering personal
 and efficient service
and Wayne and Kerry Martinovich from the Myaree Newsagency
for their continued helpful service to all customers.
These winners all were acknowledged for giving that extra service
that is a great way to keep customers happy and coming back.

The next Rotary Club of Applecross community event will be the Jacaranda Festival
to be held on Saturday 26 November.
It is a showcase of community volunteer organisations,
youth entertainment and community musical items.
There will be 100 stalls of local interest and activities to make it a fun day for all the family.

On the Lighter Side

Some Words of Wisdom from John Williamson

------

An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots,
each hung on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck.
One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect
and always delivered a full portion of water
At the end of the long walks from the stream to the house,
the cracked pot arrived only half full.
For a full two years this went on daily,
with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water.
Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments.
But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection,
and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.
After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure,
it spoke to the woman one day by the stream.
“I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes
water to leak out all the way back to your house.”
The old woman smiled.
“Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path,
but not on the other pot's side?
That's because I have always known about your flaw,
so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path,
and every day while we walk back, you water them
For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table.
Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.”
Each of us has our own unique flaw.
But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together
 so very interesting and rewarding...
You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.
