Tips for member retention
By Arnold R. Grahl Rotary International News -- 26 August 2010

Traveling together to club projects and creating a variety show as a fundraiser
were just a couple of the ideas Rotarians offered during a packed workshop on member retention at the 2010 RI Convention in Montréal, Québec, Canada.
Mike McGovern, 2009-10 Membership Development and Retention Committee chair
and past RI vice president, said the workshop he moderated, "Closing the Back Door," generated fantastic audience participation and produced many valuable ideas for retaining members.
"It moved so quickly, and so many people were able to share their comments,
that it was like a prototype of how Rotary functions ought to be," McGovern said. "It was one of those workshops where more seats were filled at the end than at the beginning."
Three panelists –
Ron Beaubien, a past RI director and past RI membership committee chair, and Hendreen "Dean" Rohrs and Pete Snider, 2009-10 regional Rotary International membership coordinators -- each briefly shared some opening remarks about member retention. Participants were then asked to turn to a neighbor and discuss strategies that had worked in their clubs. Finally, audience members were invited to step up to one of three microphones and share with the entire group.
"We asked them to be brief and to just give their name and club name, no titles,"
McGovern noted. "It worked out well and emphasized that clubs are where it's at. It tied into Rotary making clubs bigger, better, and bolder."
Workshop attendees scrambled to write down all the ideas for increasing member retention.

A sampling includes:
Make Rotary fun.
Travel together to club meetings and projects – or take a club trip together.
Form a hiking fellowship to get active outside of weekly meetings.
Go out to Sunday brunch with a group of members.
Find out what gets a member excited about Rotary.
Do a hands-on project instead of the regular meeting once a month.
Identify a signature project -- one the club is known for throughout the community.
Create a mentor committee, and offer three-year mentoring to new members.
Develop a buddy system, pairing up a new member with an existing member.
Designate someone to round up members who haven't participated in a while and drive them to the club's meetings or events.
Plan outings to involve new Rotarians and their families.
Invite families to club meetings.
Promote the practice of younger members introducing other younger members.
Organize a New Generations club to target younger professionals.

wrote as someone once said:
"What we do for ourselves dies with us, what we do for others
and the world remains and is immortal."
In the late 1990s the Rotary Club of Boulder sent Naomi Sprigg to Brazil
as an exchange student
and on the 17th of August Western Australia Health Minister Kim Hames
has announced Naomi Sprigg dos Santos
as the first recipient of his International Outreach Fellowship.
Ms Sprigg dos Santos is a community nurse in Leonora
and has developed a project aimed at identifying and treating the post-natal depression.
Dr Hames says it is hoped her project will help people in Brazil,
as well as leading to new strategies to treat post-natal depression
being brought back to Australia.

ShelterBox - What's In A Box?
- August 2010
What's In A ShelterBox?
Only new equipment is used and is carefully selected for durability,
practicality and suitability for where it is needed.
Tough, lightweight and waterproof, the box itself can also have many useful functions
from food container to cot.
We also continually work with a range of manufacturers to improve the quality
and extend the range of equipment that we have available.
A range of equipment is kept in stock.
This lets us adjust the contents of the box according to local conditions
and what is most urgently needed.
Sometimes particularly if other resources are available locally
and the overwhelming need is for shelter
we will just send tents and pack two in each box.
Each box costs an average of £490 including all materials,
packing, storage and distribution to individual recipients worldwide.
Based on six months use only this equates to 27 pence per person per day.

2010 ROTARY AUCTION UPDATE

Auction off and running!
The 2010 Rotary Auction website is open for business!
The website – www.rotaryauction.com.au
kicked off last week and all items were published in last week’s Bunbury Mail.

With dozens of items up for grabs, there’s some great bargains.
Take a look at the DBC side of beef, the Tradelink toilet suite
Looking for a makeover? Have a bid on the $50 voucher from Guys and Dolls Hairhouse.
Or can’t get rid of those unwanted pests?
Maybe a pest inspection by Aussie Pest Inspections is what you need.

There’s plenty to bid on, but time is running out –
the Auction closes in 6 days.
So have a look today!
And please help Rotary out by forwarding this email to your friends and colleagues.

Black Tie event a stunning affair
With all 240 seats sold out well in advance,
the ‘Black Tie – Black Truffle’ Rotary Ball on Saturday August 14
at the Quality Hotel Lord Forrest was a glittering and memorable affair.
The who’s who of Bunbury danced the night away to the sounds
of Little Sister and Steve Johnson & the Flirtettes,
and 4 regional executive chefs whipped up a storm in the Lord Forrest kitchens.
The menus by Jim Mailes (Lamonts Margaret River),
Russel Blaikie (Must Margaret River),
Ian Frost (the Lord Forrest) and John Dudley (the Singing Chef) were simply stunning.

More importantly Auctioneer Cecily Robertson ensured those in attendance
put their hands in their pockets for three very good causes –
beneficiaries Men’s Sheds, Milligan and Youth Care.
Items sold under Cecily’s fast and furious hammer included
a week’s accommodation in the glamorous Les Grand Moulins France,
a limo ride home, a Trek bicycle, 2 full pages in the Bunbury Mail and a helicopter ride.
While still waiting on final figures,
it is estimated more than $20,000 was raised from the evening.

Can you lend a hand with the Auction?

Fellow Rotarians,
The Attadale Club has elected to support the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society of Western Australia (MSWA) as its major project this year through the sponsorship of a 12 hour
“Swim for MS” event which will be held at the Melville Aquatic Centre
in Booragoon on Sunday 19th September from 8am to 8pm.
The event details can be viewed on the website http://www.swimforms.org.au/index.php
Those who don’t know much about MS can find out from the above website
about this terrible disease and its effects on young people particularly.
The Rotary Club of Attadale is seeking your club’s support for MS sufferers
throughout Western Australia through our project in one of three ways.

Firstly and most importantly, you can identify someone in your club
or associated with a member (s) of your club who would be willing
and able to register a team for the event.
They would then find up to 12 other people who would form a team
under that person’s captaincy.
All would register on line and then add photos, messages etc to encourage
other people to support them in the event.
There is a registration fee of $30 per registrant which goes to MS but in return,
each swimmer receives food and drinks after their swim
and a participant’s pack which includes an event ‘t’ shirt, a swimming cap
and a number of other benefit items.
The communication possibilities are numerous and are explained on the website.
Your club and its members can support the team by donating on line.
All donations over $2 are tax deductible
and the donor will be automatically issued with an emailed receipt by MSWA.
It is a particularly easy and user-friendly system.
You can even provide your team member with a message of support
and your donation will be displayed if you are happy to be acknowledged publicly.
All contributions, no matter how small or large, will assist greatly.
Some donation options are shown on the website
but there are facilities to donate any amount.

Secondly, if you cannot form a team you can help by going on line
and donating to a person or a team which is registered.
The Rotary Club of Attadale’s “Yvonne’s Angels” would love to have your support.
Both your club and individual members can donate in this way.

Finally, you can share details of this event (via the link above)
with people in your personal communities
(sporting clubs, churches, social groups, work environments, family and friends).
The RCA looks forward to your support.

Regards
Rod Rate

Re: Books to Papua and New Guinea
Clubs in our former district 9460 sent six shipping containers full of books
to Africa in recent years – a fantastic international project.
Rotarians in Manjimup are now supporting a similar project
to a village in Papua and New Guinea
and will appreciate whatever help you can give.
Our project is in partnership with local Adventists and will run for three months.
The container has been acquired and is located in Perth
and we are asking interested Rotarians to assist in three ways:
To provide surplus books that are in good condition.
Books should suit children and suit adult reading (semi literate but keen to learn);
technical books have very limited application;
To sound out local primary school principals about surplus books;
To provide a Club contact to coordinate member’s efforts;
Delivery of books to the “sorting and packing” venue will be appreciated
but arrangements to pick-up can also be made.
Contacts and addresses will be supplied by me to your Club coordinator
if your Club is willing to help.
My contact details for reply and ongoing liaison are:
Alan Lush
bernal8@bigpond.com (preferred)
h 9771 1733
A shipping container will take 1000 cartons of books
(equiv. to wine carton in size); a lot of books.
The certified container has been purchased outright
and will also be donated to the village for other storage purposes.
Freight costs are substantial and local members and busily making
and selling apple juice to fund the project.
Our challenge is to meet the project’s “sunset clause” of three months
to ensure it does not drag on.
Thank you for considering this project.

Rotary Club of Corrigin

Hello everyone

The Rotary Club of Corrigin is putting together a recipe book of our favourite recipes
and we would like to include yours and the ones from your Club members!!
Each recipe will be 'named' with the person's name
and the Rotary Club to which they belong,
together with the Club's best telephone contact number for enquiries.
The books will be bound and then made available for sale.
What a terrific way of advertising your Club
AND all you have to do is provide the recipes!!
How simple is that?

If you would like to be included, please email your recipes to me -
complete with a photograph of what it SHOULD look like!
Please feel free to pass this on to as many Rotarians as possible
as it would be wonderful to have a whole range of different Club inclusions.
Warm regards and happy cooking

Quote of the week

SMILE!!!!

stolen from the Rotary Club of Bunbury newsletter

--

A Touching Story

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs.
Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play
at a graveside service for a homeless man.
He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery.
As I was not familiar with the area,
I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions.
I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone
and the hearse was nowhere in sight.
There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.
I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late.
I went to the side of the grave and looked down
and the vault lid was already in place.
I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.
The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around.
I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends.
I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.
And as I played 'Amazing Grace,' the workers began to weep.
They wept, I wept, we all wept together.
When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car.
Though my head hung low, my heart was full.
As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say,
"I never seen nothin' like that before
and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

Apparently I'm still lost....

AUGUST
Membership and Retention Month

New approach vital to membership growth
By Ryan Hyland Rotary International News

Past RI President Cliff Dochterman is author
of The ABCs of Rotary. Rotary Images
Rotary International
Potential club members are everywhere.
But to get them to join Rotary, clubs must use creativity and imagination,
says Past RI President Cliff Dochterman.
"Rotary International leaders keep emphasizing membership growth
and extension because Rotary's very survival depends on it," says Dochterman,
a member of the Rotary Club of Moraga, California, USA,
and author of The ABCs of Rotary, a resource for new members.
"If Rotary is to grow, we all must take action."
Dochterman believes clubs can thrive by seeking new members,
retaining current ones, and sponsoring new clubs in the community.
He offers the following tips:
Seeking new members
Clubs must have a specific plan in place, says Dochterman.
Use a team approach.
Teams should have several members who meet with qualified business
and professional leaders to discuss the benefits of joining Rotary.
Set aside one club meeting per month to be a "visitor day,"
to which all club members would invite a friend or prospective member.
Seek out natural prospects, including Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars,
Rotaractors, and Group Study Exchange (GSE) team members.
Retaining current members
"Keeping current club members is just as important as bringing in new ones.
The key is to adapt and change," says Dochterman.
Make sure club meetings, service activities
, and social events are interesting, fun, and worthwhile.
Initiate more hands-on projects so club members will feel
that they're making a difference.
Eliminate 100 percent attendance requirements.
Be alert to the symptoms that lead to resignation.
Club leaders should be considerate to members' personal problems.

it took the possessions of the Byford & Districts Rotary Club with it.
After eleven years of service to the Byford community,
the Byford & Districts Rotary Club
had already built up a strong sense of history
and meaning for itself.
While the club initially feared that all its possessions had been
lost in the fire, one item that was able to be recovered
was the its brass bell,
The bell that was sent from [US Rotary club] Slippery Rock,
so the bell has a little bit of history attached to it.
“Somebody in Byford, actually wrapped up some gifts for some
people in America, relations of theirs,
and they wrapped it up in a local newspaper stating that
the Rotary club was about to form in Byford.
“They got on to the District Governor here in WA
and found out all about it and then the next thing is we got this bell,
it was donated to us from the Rotary Club of Slippery Rock
because they’d seen our local newspaper

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

SMILES!!!!!

Several travellers travelling through the countryside
found themselves in the small town of Mercy.
Feeling in need of a drink they went to the Mercy Café.
When they asked for something to drink the waitress
said that they only had tea available
“ and I should tell you that we only have Koala Tea.”
“What do you mean?” the customers asked.
“It’s tea made out of koalas” she replied.
Although some what doubtful, they agreed to have it,
thinking that Mercy seemed an odd town.
When it arrived, they looked into their cups
to see that there were small pieces of koala – fur, ears, etc -
floating in the brew.
“What’s all this?” they asked.
The waitress replied
“The koala tea of Mercy is not strained!”

Since his wife is eight months into her pregnancy,
the husband decides to sleep on the floor to avoid any
regrettable 'mistake'which might happen,
for he has been desperate for sex for quite awhile now..
Just before lying down on the bed,
she glances at him and sees the poor guy curled up on the floor,
eyes staring widely into the empty air, filled with hopeless desire..
.Feeling sorry for her husband,
she opens the top drawer of the cabinet, takes out a fifty dollar bill,
and gives it to him.
She says..."Awww, honey you're so depressed...
Here, take this and go to the woman next door,
and she will let you sleep with her tonight...
But remember that this happens only once... Ok?...
Don't ever talk about it or ask me to do this again."
The husband rolls his eyes in disbelief,
but afraid that she may change her mind,
he grabs the money and leaves quickly.
A few minutes later, he returns,
hands the bill back to the wife and says with much disappointment,
"She said this isn't enough, she wants sixty dollars..."
The wife's face slowly turns red with anger:
"Damn that so and so..
When she was pregnant and her husband came over here...
I only charged him fifty..."
