November is Foundation Month
--

R otarians walked, ran, and sold everything from hot dogs to flower bulbs
to celebrate World Polio Day, 24 October,
in support of the global effort to eradicate the disease.
Led by RI President Ray Klinginsmith,
an estimated 3,000 Rotarians and supporters walked along
San Francisco’s Embarcadero waterfront on World Polio Day.
The walk culminated in the illumination of the Ferry Building
with the words "End Polio Now."
In the Netherlands, Rotary clubs launched a national polio eradication
fundraising and awareness campaign,
with the goal of netting US$2.5 million for PolioPlus.
Rotarians in District 7230 (Bermuda; part of New York, USA)
sponsored World Polio Week in Bermuda with Purple Pinkie Day fundraisers
and a dinner in recognition of Past District Governor Walter Maddocks,
the first director of the PolioPlus fundraising campaign.
In Kentucky, USA, Rotary clubs partnered with the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games,
held from 25 September to 10 October,
in support of Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge
and The Rotary Foundation’s Annual Programs Fund .
Through an agreement with the concession company for the games,
a volunteer force of more than 2,000 Rotarians, family members,
and friends sold food and refreshments,
with a percentage of the profits going to the two causes.
Equestrian athletes from 58 countries participated in the event,
which drew more than 500,000 people.
“We were very busy the entire time, but it wasn’t a burden,” says Sara Callaway,
a member of the Rotary Club of Frankfort.
“I like to do volunteer work for things I believe in.”
An estimated 460 Rotarians and friends ran and walked
the Eurasia Marathon in Istanbul on 17 October, raising about US $8,000.
The race course included the Bosporus Bridge, which connects Europe and Asia.
On 11 November, Hong Kong Rotarians will hold their annual 10K race
for elite and recreational runners and a 3K race for children.
Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland has partnered
with the Eden Project in England and the International Flower Bulb Centre
in the Netherlands to sell and plant 4.6 million crocus bulbs
across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The effort is part of RIBI’s Thanks for Life project, which raises funds for polio eradication and awareness about the disease.
“The color purple is a vibrant [element], as purple dye is used to mark children’s fingers
after immunization against polio,” says Alan Wilding,
president of the Rotary Club of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England.
“The bulbs we plant in October will flower in time to mark
Rotary’s birthday on 23 February,”
which will also coincide with End Polio Now
lightings and events around the world.

Rotary International has been a partner with the Scouts and Girl Guides
in serving young people since their inception.
As Rotary spread around the world,
its support of Scouting and Girl Guiding also spread.
In 1916, Rotarians in Edinburgh, Scotland, joined by 100 local Scouts,
organized a special Christmas party for children
whose fathers were serving in World War I.
In 1922, the Rotary Club of Manila, Philippines, established a local Scout council.
Rotary Clubs from Australia to Brunei built huts for Girl Guide groups.
The principles and goals of Rotary, Scouting and Guiding are closely allied.
Character-building; service to country, to others,
and to self; teaching leadership skills; and becoming aware of the world around us
“these are all incorporated into the programs and activities of each organization.
The values expressed in Rotary Internationals Motto
and the Four Way Test greatly parallel those articulated
in the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan.
Rotarians have long served as role models, demonstrating leadership, character,
and the value of selfless service to the community.
Rotary founder Paul P. Harris was himself a recipient of Scouting's
prestigious Silver Buffalo award in 1934.
His and others' efforts represent to a high degree the slogan
"Every Rotarian an Example to Youth."
One of the first interactions between Rotary and both Scouting and Guiding
were in helping provide camps.
Many early camps were called Camp Rotary and many such camps still exist.
Rotary clubs also chartered or otherwise supported Scout and Guide groups.
Today, Rotarians remain among the foremost sponsors of Scouting and Guiding,
seeing it, like Rotary, as an excellent way to serve others..
Conversely, Scouting and Guiding has proven to be a strong partner in Rotary's mission
"to help build a better world".
One example is ShelterBox which provides supplies designed to help an extended family
of up to 10 people survive a disaster for at least 6 months.
This project was started in 2000 by a Rotary Club in Cornwall, England.
It has spread to become the largest project of any Rotary club in the world.
Scout and Guide groups quickly joined in supporting ShelterBox.
In 2009, The Scout Association officially became a partner in Shelter Box.
ShelterBox has worked on every continent, responding to earthquakes,
tsunamis, floods, typhoons, hurricanes, volcanoes and conflicts.

The aim of Scouting is to encourage the physical, intellectual,
social, emotional and spiritual development of young people
so that they take a constructive place in society as responsible citizens.
Canning Bridge Rotary Club member Phill Furey is a scouter
raising funds to help Scout leaders achieve their goal of delivering a program
that reflects the aims and principals of Scouting.

Scouting in partnership with ECOtanka has done a great deal
on the 800mm Sportstanka water bottle.
ECOtankas are high quality solid 304 stainless steel drink bottles that are ultra light,
non-leaching, non-toxic and 100% BPA free.

If you would like to purchase one of these great Sportstanka deals
from Phill, send him a email at plfurey@bigpond.com
or phone 0413 279 281.
The Sportstanka prices:
Sportstanka $25.00
Cover $10.00

"QUOTE OF THE WEEK"

SMILE!!!

A man is stopped by the police at midnight
and asked where he's going
."I'm on the way to listen to a lecture about the effects of alcohol
and drug abuse on the human body."
The policeman asks,
"Really? And who's going to give a lecture at this time of night?"
"My wife", he replied.
