May is
Australian Rotary Health Month

On May 21st all Rotary Clubs were sent a letter from Joy Gillett,
the CEO of Australian Rotary Health.
Mental Health First Aid Workshops
We are pleased to announce that the Commonwealth Government
is providing funding to Australian Rotary Health
to deliver 60 Mental First Aid Workshops to members
of the general public [including Rotarians]
accross Australia from July 1st 2010.
Each Workshop is to be hosted by a Rotary Club.
Australian Rotary Health isasking the Rotary Clubs
who held Communiy Mental Health Forums
within the past two years to offer these workshops to their communities.
These forums have shown in the evaluation that programs
such as Mental First Aid will be of a great help to the communities.
The Mental Health First Aid Workshop will consist
of a 12 hour Mental Health First Aid course
that teaches adults how to provide intial support
to people who are developing a mental illness
or experiencing a mental health crisis.
Each course is to be held over two consecutive days
and have approxiametly 20 participants.
We are asking Rotary Clubs to host and promote
a Mental First Aid Workshop with no, or little cost tothe club.
Australian Rotary Health's Program Co-ordinator Cheryl Deguara
will be working with Rotary Clubs on this Community project.
If you would like to receive further information
on this project please contact Cheryl
on [02] 8837 1900

The tri-district final of the Rotary 4 Way Test Speaking Contest
was held on 19 May at the Mt
Lawley Golf Club – a wonderful venue.
The 60 Rotarians, partners and supporters

who included the three district governors and their
partners were treated to a very nice two-course meal

at the South of Perth Yacht Club
The six very good speakers who contested the title

were drawn from the winners and runners-up at
the three district conferences.
The winner was Simon Thuijs, from Nagle Catholic Conference in Geraldton,

who gave a veryemotional speech on his subject,
Standing Up to Society.
Simon won a plaque and $500 cash prize.
Runner-up was Anna-Rose Shack from Penrhos College in Como,

whose well-presented speech
titled Things of the Day and Online World

won her a certificate and $250.
The evening was chaired by Allan McLean of District 9450.

THE NATIONALS .WA FOODBANK RUN’
Dear District Governor Keith Hopkins

I would like to promote a unique opportunity for Rotarians
in the South West to participate in a local cause.

‘NationalsWA Foodbank Run’ is a charitable food drive
going from Mandurah to Albany beginning on 2nd August 2010
and concluding on the 6th August 2010 collecting food for Foodbank WA.
This is the very first year of the ‘NationalsWA Foodbank Run’.
Foodbank WA supports around 600 needy and charitable organisations
throughout Western Australia.
It does this by collecting food from participating businesses
and redistributing to charitable organisations like Anglicare.
It also runs the Foodbank WA School Breakfast Program
providing much needed nutrition to many school children
right across metropolitan, rural and remote Western Australia.
Foodbank WA has regional branches in Albany, Geraldton, Bunbury and Peel
and is supported by over 100 volunteers and employing disabled staff.
My aim is to drive from Mandurah to Albany
via a convoluted route collecting food and delivering to the regional Foodbanks.
I have arranged local ‘collection points’ in most South West towns,
where the community can make a food donation.
This will rely on the community responding to local media
and advertising that I will do in support of the ‘run’.
Perhaps herein lies an opportunity for the branches
and members of Rotary in the South West.
They can participate in this project by actively facilitating a local drive,
collecting food stuffs from their areas and depositing at the collection points,
or in the case of large donations registering direct pick up.
I am still finalising these collection points,
but if any Branches are interested in helping out,
they can register that interested and we will keep them informed.
This can be done by contacting my office:
Vicki Hicks, Electoral Officer

Mob: 0407 172 627
vicki.hicks@mp.wa.gov.au
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter
and hope you can come on board to support this inaugural event.
I look forward to your reply and if you require any further information
regarding this event or would like to meet with me, please contact my office.
Kind regards
Hon. Colin Holt MLC
Member for the South West

set up by the world wide "Teen Challenge" organization.
Teen Challenge Esperance is WA's largest Youth Drug

Rotary Club of East Perth
The Rotary Club of East Perth, Western Australia,
partnered with the Rotary Club of Negombo, Sri Lanka
recently received a Rotary Foundation “Matching Grant”
for a project to provide Computers and related equipment
for a Technical / Trade Workshop School
linked with an Orphanage in Ahungalla, Sri Lanka
.This equipment will assist in the technical education
of the underprivileged children of this Country
by giving them the opportunity to learn computer skills
so that they may be able to obtain gainful employment in later life.
The Government provided education system
and teaching standards in Sri Lankan schools is greatly under resourced.
Families of children attending these Government schools,
if they can afford it, generally have to provide for
extra curriculum studies through private tuition
after school so that their children can achieve
an average grade pass in their classes.
Also the provision of Technical / Trade Workshop type schools
for those not of high academic ability but good with their hands
in practical manual work, are very few.
When the Tsunami of 2004 hit the south eastern, southern
and south western coastline of Sri Lanka,
many children of that country became orphans of the disaster.
The Salesian Order of the Vice Province of Sri Lanka,
which is dedicated to the care of young children
and youth, through generous donations from Italy, Australia and New Zealand
constructed an Orphanage in the southern area of the country
near the townsite of Ahungalla,
to house these children of tsunami victims and young boys at risk.
Included in the construction of the Orphanage
was a Technical School with trade workshops
to help those not gifted with academic minds
that they might learn a specific trade for later life employment.
The Technical School linked with the Orphanage,
although administered by a Christian Catholic Order
, is open to children of either gender
and of every race and religion in the community.
The schooling is for all children from the orphanage
and those living in the nearby countryside of Ahungalla
to assist improve their educational standards.
The mainly voluntary teaching is provided by selected teachers
through and of the Brotherhood of the Salesian Order.
At this stage the Technical School covers the trades of electrical,
metal work – cutting, forming, welding - and computers.
Today the requirement is for updated teaching
and learning materials and equipment.
The main need is in the popular choice course
of both boys and girls – computer studies.
Computers these days are a necessary part of everyday life
and these children will benefit greatly by the provision to them
of the requested items in this humanitarian need
for their future life’s working conditions.
A member from the International Partner Club (Rotary Club of East Perth)
has visited the island of Sri Lanka,
seen the Ahungalla Orphanage and linked Technical / Trade workshop School,
spoken to the Salesian Brother in charge of administering these facilities,
met and mixed with the wonderfully friendly people in the community.
Thus we hope that our efforts in Rotary may be able to assist
the lives of so many children of a less fortunate generation in this country.
It is estimated that the arranging and purchasing
of the educational equipment of 10 desktop computers,
and related materials of scanner, computer tool kit,
professional software and installation
should be completed within 6 months. -

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

SMILE!!!!!

Two highways were having a drink in a bar
when a piece of pink tarmac walked in.
The highways dropped to the floor
and cowered under the table.
The pink tarmac had a drink and then left.
The highways got up and resumed drinking.
“Why did you guys hide from that piece of tarmac?”
the bartender asked.
A highway was quick to respond,
“Are you kidding?
That guy’s a cycle path!”

Council approves fifth Avenue of Service
By Ryan Hyland Rotary International News
-- 28 April 2010

A representative[above] makes a point on a resolution during
the opening day of the Council 26 April.
On Wednesday, the Council approved adding a fifth Avenue of Service.
Representatives at the 2010 Council on Legislation
approved an enactment 28 April to add a fifth Avenue of Service:
New Generations.
After adopting an amendment to change the name from Youth Service,
as originally proposed, to New Generations,
the Council narrowly supported the addition to article 5
of the Standard Rotary Club Constitution.
The 263-250 vote was received by surprised gasps
and applause after a short debate.
New Generations joins Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service,
and International Service as the foundation of club activity.
Before starting a project,
Rotarians are asked to think broadly about how their club
and its members could contribute within each avenue.
“It’s a significant change – a historic day in Rotary,”
said Council Chair Mark Daniel Maloney.
“Rotarians have always strongly supported youth activities
even though they were never part of the four Avenues of Service.
I think this strengthens our commitment.”
The Avenue of New Generations recognizes the positive change
implemented by youth and young adults involved
in leadership development activities,
community and international service projects,
and exchange programs that enrich
and foster world peace and cultural understanding

SMILE!!!

Once upon a time there were two mice,
who lived in a big museum.
Everynight, when the place closed up tight,
they used to play among the exhibits.
They crawled through the dinosaur skeletons,
and they scampered over the picture frames of the Monets and the Picassos,
and they shuffled around therelics taken from an Egyptian tomb.
One night, they were playing near a big, tall suit of armor.
They climbed inat the visor, but one of the mice slipped and fell -
-tumbly-tumbly-kerplop --
all the way to the bottom of one leg.
He was lost!
He was disoriented!
He was frightened!
"Help!" he started to cry.
"Help me make it through the knight!
