May is Australian Rotary Health Month

-----------------------------

Meet Elizabeth, a resident of Nueva Esperanza,
Honduras, a sustainable community created for families
devastated by Hurricane Mitch.
Rotarians in districts 4250 (Honduras) and 5220 (California, USA)
established the community with the help of a
US$445,000 Rotary Foundation grant.
The project provided eye and dental care, medicines, medical equipment,
books, computers, and other benefits to the community.
The effort enabled Elizabeth’s mother to receive
a microcredit loan to help start a handmade paper business,
doubling her family’s income
and enabling them to pay off their new home.
In addition, Elizabeth and other students received school supplies.
-----------------------
As of 31 March 2010,
there were 1,215,495 Paul Harris Fellows in the world.
Each Paul Harris Fellow plays a key role in helping
Rotary reach more people in need.
A Us$1,000 contribution provides:
· Mosquito nets for 500 children in Tanzania
· Two borewells providing clean water to
130 people in a village in India
· Stoves for 10 needy families in Guatemala
· Microcredit loans to help 23 women in
the Philippines support their families
· Reading books for 300 elementary school students in south Africa
How far will your contribution go?

ROMAC
Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children

With the economic downturn
and no shortage of under-privileged children desperately
needing life saving operations, right now more than ever ROMAC really,
really needs your support.
Thanks to caring people like you ROMAC,
Fortunately, ROMAC is run entirely by Rotarian volunteers just like you,
community spirited hospitals reduce costs
and compassionate surgeons donate their time and expertise,
often gaining valuable experiences they normally
couldn’t access that benefits our children.
This generosity dramatically increases the value
of every dollar you donate,
and whilst ROMAC brings the children from overseas
the money you donate stays right here in our country.
When your Rotary club donates $1,000 -
more if they can -
you could win up to three luxury ’Peppers’ holidays plus $3,000,
and we Rotarian volunteers can continue changing
and saving children’s lives.
Your donation will make a difference to our often ‘forgotten’ children.
Thank you.
Six things you need to know about ROMAC’s Win three luxury holidays*
1. Is this open to all Rotary Clubs?
Yes, every club that donates $1,000 or more
will be entered into up to 3 lucky draws to win up
to 3 luxury holidays for 2 plus $1,000 towards transport for each holiday.
2. Who goes on holiday when my club wins?
That’s up to your club; hold a members only raffle,
use it as a fund raiser or?
No matter how the club disposes each holiday they also receive $1,000
for each one that they can use any way they want.
3. Do we have to donate 3 times to win 3 prizes?
No. However, if you donate and we receive your donation by 5 Aug 2010
you’ll be in all 3 lucky draws (1 holiday per draw)
and could win them all including $3,000.
Donate after this and before 5 Feb 2011 in time
for the 2nd and 3rd draws and you could win 2 holidays plus $2,000.
Donate after this and before 5 Aug 2011
and you could win the 3rd and final holiday plus $1,000.
4. What if we donate more than $1,000?
You’ll greatly increase your chances of winning,
plus the earlier you donate the more times you could win!
Each $1,000 unit donation is entered into every remaining lucky draw.
If, for example, you donate $5,000 before 5 Aug 2010
you’ll have five separate entries in all 3 lucky draws
to win all 3 holidays plus $3,000 cash!
5. Who chooses which luxury Peppers Resort we stay at?
If you donate by 5 Aug 2010 you’ll be in the 1st draw
and can choose from any of the 3 Peppers Resorts,
the winner of the 2nd draw chooses from the 2 remaining ones
and the 3rd winner enjoys a holiday at the 3rd one.
6 Triple your chances of winning by donating 3 times,
once from your 2009/10 budget,
and twice from your 2010/11 budget.

Thanks to caring people like you ROMAC,
an Australia/New Zealand Rotary program,
arranged dignity restoring treatment on Ishraq, above left,
who suffered 40% burns to his legs, arms and lower body.
We are grateful to Interplast for alerting us to Ishraq.
Rocelyn, below left, had a two kilo tumour that doctors advised
would have killed her within a matter of weeks
had ROMAC not brought her to Australia for an urgent,
life saving operation
.Whilst both children are grateful that they can now live normal lives,
there are more underprivileged and deserving children
who urgently need your help to enable ROMAC to continue

Iwas reading the latest newsletter from RGHF
[Rotary Global History Fellowship]
and they were featuring Bob Aitken
from Rotary Down Under

I am a Rotarian because a dear old primary school headmaster
sought me out as a young country newspaper editor
and invited me to join the Rotary Club of Parkes,
NSW, Australia, many years ago.
I have remained a Rotarian for 35 years because
it did not take me long to realize that this unique vocationally based
service organization provided the opportunity for ONE person
to be part of an amazing humanitarian army doing special things in our world.
We heal the sick, care for the poor, provide basic literacy and numeracy skills,
provide food and fresh water for the hungry,
and - in recent times -
provide educational resources for a new breed of 'peace fighters'
playing a major role in conflict resolution around our world.
I have great pride in Rotary's ongoing mentoring of young people
and dedication to lifting ethics in business,
and I draw daily inspiration from the knowledge that Rotary International
impacts 33,000 communities throughout our world EVERY DAY!

SEMINAR
WORKING WITH ABORIGINAL COMMUNITIES

Sponsors:
Rotary Club of Osborne Park
and the District 9450 Aboriginal Reference Group
5.30pm for a 6.00pm Start,
Concluding 10.00pm
10 June 2010
Venue: The Gallery, Kurongkurl Katitjin,
Centre for Indigenous Australian Studies (Building 15)
Mount Lawley Campus, Edith Cowan University.
Each Club will have received a notice regarding
the forthcoming seminar aimed at assisting Clubs
having an interest in undertaking projects with Aboriginal Communities.
Registrations to attend are already being received by myself (on 08 9447 8605]
or by leaving a message or by E-mail duftys@optusnet.com.au)
One session in the program was related to
“District 9450’s experiences on types of strategies
that lead to successful outcomes for Clubs”.
I am concerned that this section is too ‘District 9450-centric’.
I would like to broaden it to a Rotary International WA
perspective by including examples from other Districts
to better fit the likely audience.
Hence, I would appreciate it if your Club
has undertaken projects in the past or currently,
that one of your members contacts me by telephone (08 9447 8605)
or by E-mail (duftys@optusnet.com.au).
I would like to know about your project so that
I can incorporate your initiative on the night.
Yours sincerely

SMILE!!!!!

A mechanic who worked out of his home had a dog named Mace.
Mace had a bad habit of eating all the grass on the mechanic's lawn,
so the mechanic had to keep Mace inside.
The grass eventually became overgrown.
One day the mechanic was working on a car in the backyard
and dropped his wrench, losing it in the tall grass.
He couldn't find it for the life of him,
so he decided to call it a day.
That night, Mace escaped from the house
and ate all the grass in the backyard.
The next morning the mechanic went outside
and saw his wrench glinting in the sunlight.
Realizing what had happened
he looked toward the heavens and proclaimed,
"A grazing Mace, how sweet the hound, that saved a wrench for me!"
