Polio eradication shifts into emergency mode

Rotary International News -- 25 May 2012

Despite the dramatic drop in polio cases in the last year, the threat of continued transmission due to funding and immunization gaps has driven the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) to launch the Global Polio Emergency Action Plan 2012-13.
The plan aims to boost vaccination coverage in the three remaining polio-endemic countries -- Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan -- to levels needed to stop polio transmission. Health ministers meeting at the World Health Assembly in Geneva adopted a resolution on 25 May that declared “the completion of polio eradication to be a programmatic emergency for global public health.”
Polio eradication activities have resulted in several landmark successes since 2010. India, long regarded as the nation facing the greatest challenges to eradication, was removed from the list of polio-endemic countries by the World Health Organization (WHO) in February. Outbreaks in previously polio-free countries were nearly all stopped.
During that same time span, however, polio outbreaks in China and West Africa due to importation from Pakistan and Nigeria, respectively, have highlighted the continued threat of resurgence. Failure to eradicate the disease could lead within a decade to paralysis of as many as 200,000 children per year worldwide.

MAGIC

A well-off bloke decided to go into business for himself. He fancied owning a pub, so he searched until he found one for sale in a small village.
Unfortunately, the pub was very old and the foundation was crooked. It would cost too much to fix. So the new owner decided to knock it down and build a new one.
He hired a bulldozer and cleared all the debris. Then he spent a lot of time hauling in dirt, building it up and leveling it for the new foundation.
Some village folks were out watching him work. "What is that bloke doing?" asked a passerby. A villager replied,
"He's razing the bar to a new level."

According to the Knight-Ridder News Service, the inscription on the metal bands used by the U.S. Department of the Interior to tag migratory birds has been changed.

The bands used to bear the address of the Washington Biological Survey, abbreviated, "Wash. Biol. Surv." until the agency received the following letter from an Arkansas camper:

"Dear Sirs: While camping last week I shot one of your birds. I think it was a crow. I followed the cooking instructions on the leg tag and I want to tell you it was horrible."

Media statement – Rotary Club of Matilda Bay

The launch of the Manna Community Van was held at the Regal Theatre recently.  Manna Inc is a volunteer charity that helps to feed, clothe and provide meals to homeless people, supply breakfasts to school children and food parcels to families in need.  In conjunction with Canon Foods, the Regal Theatre, The Factory and the Rotary Club of Matilda Bay (co-ordinated by Rotary member Stan Bird) these groups pooled their resources over the last few months to donate the fully equipped “Community Support Van”  to meet the need for education and support for many families, pensioners and children in Perth.
Bev and John Lowe are the founders of Manna Inc. and Bev spoke at a breakfast meeting recently. Bev passed on her thanks after the launch.  Thanks also to Stan and his family members for co-ordinatiing the project and securing the van.

The power of Music

A funny story circulated recently about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes.  Doyle evidently told of a time when he climbed into a taxi cab in Paris.  Before he could utter a word, the driver turned to him and asked, "Where can I take you, Mr. Doyle?"
Doyle was flabbergasted.  He asked the driver if he had ever seen him before.  "No, sir," the driver responded, "I have never seen you before."
Then he explained, "This morning's paper had a story about you being on vacation in Marseilles.  This is the taxi stand where people who return from Marseilles always come.  Your skin color tells me you have been on vacation.  The inkspot on your right index finger suggests to me that you are a writer.  Your clothing is very English, not French.  Adding up all those pieces of information, I deduced that you are Sir Arthur Conan Doyle."
"This is truly amazing!" the writer exclaimed.  "You are a real-life counterpart to my fictional creation, Sherlock Holmes!"
"There is one more thing," the driver said.
"What is that?" asked Mr. Doyle.
"Your name is on the front of your suitcase."
