New phone scam targets Rotarians

Rotary International News - 16 December 2011
A number of Rotarians have received phone calls from
someone impersonating RI President Kalyan Banerjee or his assistant,
claiming he was stuck at an airport and needed the recipient to send money to help.
This phone scam has been reported to authorities in Australia and the Philippines,
where the calls appeared to originate.
Calls are now begin reported in Hawaii, USA,
and the scam may continue to spread.
Please be aware of these other scams:

• An email scam targeting Rotarians and Rotaractors claims the recipient
has won hundreds of thousands of euros through an international promotional program
conducted by the "Euro-Millones Lottery".
Attached to the e-mail is a PDF letter signed by "Luis Alberto, Vice President"
with a photo of Past RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar.

• An email scam with the subject line "Dear Award Beneficiary!!!"
has targeted Rotarians claiming the recipient has won US$500,000
and two HP laptops from RI.
The email asks for contact information and is signed by
"Mrs. Sarah Olic, Programme Co-ordinator, Rotary International".

Rotary International does not solicit funds through e-mail,
nor does it ask that personal information be updated by e-mail or other electronic means.
RI encourages Rotarians and Rotary clubs to avoid becoming victims
of such scams by deleting any e-mail that appears suspicious.

Microscopes for Primary Schools

The Rotary Club of Narrogin has sponsored and provided 90 magnifying microscopes
to the local Narrogin Primary Schools and Wickepin Primary School.
They will allow the children to explore
and discover the wonders of science and the natural world.

The project is the initiative of the Chief Scientist of Western Australia,
Prof Lyn Beazley, and the Coordinating Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay.
It also has great support from the Science Teachers Association of WA (STAWA)
 and the Water Corporation,
who have together produced an Activity Booklet for use by the teachers.

The project was initiated through the Wickepin Primary School,
who contacted the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay
who inturn contacted the Narrogin Club to consider the project
. The President David Sivyer, immediate Past President Brian Lange
and Community Service Director Steve Gorton
were impressed and the Club didn’t hesitate to take the project
on and extended it to the Narrogin Primary Schools. The rest is history.
The last school to be presented was St Matthews Primary School last Friday.
“Feedback from the schools has been terrific,
the teachers and students are impressed with the microscopes and their clarity”. Steve said.
The Rotary Club is aware of a number of other schools in the immediate region
and would like to invite corporate sponsors to consider the project.
At $15.00 per unit plus batteries is exceptional value
and adds real value to the primary science classes in the schools.
The Rotary Club of Narrogin can arrange the details
and supply through the coordinating Freshwater Bay Rotary Club.

 Mens Shed
Hi Jim,
here are photos for the front wall construction.
We had 4 brickies and about 8 assistants.
The 1st bricks were laid at 7am and the job was completed at 12.40pm
or about 5 hours and 40 minutes including smoko.
Now there is productivity.
The shed is now locked up.
The next steps will be
Power and lights
Water
Frame up and gyprock toilets, meeting room
and kitchen Buy or build and fit kitchen
Fit toilets and hand basins
 Hotmix road and carpark
Fence the block
President Bill Adams is making an application
to the Department of Veteran affairs
for specialized equipment such as larger dust
extractors and planers.
The Men's Shed will be operating after the new year
 to complete these tasks.
We expect the shed to be complete by the end of March.
John"
A great result with special thanks to John and his team..
