Potential Scam
Dear Rotarians,
There is currently a scam circulating as someone representing themselves
as RIP Kalyan Banerjee purportedly calling from the Philippines.
They said his sister has died and that he would be travelling to Fremantle
to attend the funeral and needed assistance with funds to make the trip.
Please note that RIP Banerjee will not contact individual Rotarians to assist with flights
– any requests from RI (including from the President)
will come via the District Governor. Should you have any queries,
please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours in Rotary DG Jodie
ED.... I can vouch for this having received a call on Saturday 10th
from this person wanting to talk to the President of the our club
He indicates that he is calling from Phillippines airport
and will ask you to take down his mobile no and call him back
Do not call back
PDG Phil Cordery

East Timor Roofing - Mini Silos Project
Some statistics and information from ‘Seeds of Life’ research.
The majority (85%) of East Timorese people are subsistence farmers.
The usual size of a farm is about one hectare,
a size limit set by the absence of mechanised farming.
There are 3 seasons in East Timor,
“the Wet, the Dry and the Hungry’ seasons”
. It is in the hungry season that many communities and families
are under real pressure to maintain their essential quality and quantity of life.
A key crop is corn (maize).
Corn is generally grown only once a year during the wet season,
November to March,
so the grain must be stored for 12 months from one harvest to the next.
Because the farm size is small and yields are low (average 1.5 t/ha),
most families do not harvest enough corn to eat from one harvest to the next
. To make matters worse,
because of the way the corn is stored,
30% of the harvest can be eaten by weevils or rats.
There are an estimated 180,000 farming families in East Timor.
Depending on family needs, if every family had the equivalent of 600lt to1000lt storage,
this would be more than enough grain to feed the family for 12 months,
especially during the lean times and to ensure viable seed for the next crop.
Research with farmers in East Timor has shown
that by storing shelled corn in sealed, airtight containers,
it can be kept for 2 years or more.
Weevils cannot live or reproduce without oxygen.
When weevil infested corn is stored in an airtight container,
the oxygen content drops, and the weevils suffocate.
The corn will still be viable as seed for the next crop.
Any weevils in the corn stored in an airtight mini silo will die within 7-10 days.
Opening the silo periodically to remove corn will not allow weevils to reinfest the remaining corn.
This is a great project for individual Rotarians or Clubs to fund,
1/ East Timor is a worthy international project,
just 400 miles North of Darwin,
2/ That Australia owes this country and its people a debt of honour,
3/ It is in our interests to help a neighbour ,
4/ We ‘lend a hand’ to Project managers
and local staff who demonstrate the appropriateness of Rotary abroad
and
5/ Because it is affordable and offers a recognisable and sustainable benefit.
1. Each 200lt silo can store 180 kg of corn.
Without good storage, 30% of the corn would be lost to weevils and rats.
Good storage will ensure viable seed for the next crop.
2. Having good on farm storage means farmers can plant for high yield and keep the surplus.
Farmers know that they can keep a surplus and won’t lose precious grain to weevils and rats.
3. East Timor Roofing Company (a significant and successful Rotary Project)
mini silos are made of high quality Australian materials to ensure silo longevity.
Silos are made in 200lt or 400lt capacities with airtight, durable PVC, screw cap access openings.

JOKE OF THE WEEK –
Three aspiring psychiatrists from three universities
, were attending their first class on emotional extremes.
'Just to establish some parameters,'
said the professor to the student from Oxford University,
'What is the opposite of joy?
''Sadness' said the student.
'And the opposite of depression?'
he asked the young lady from Cambridge .
'Elation,' she said.
'Elation,' she said.
'And you, sir,' he said to the student from Dublin University ,
'How about the opposite of woe?'
The student replied,
'I believe that would be giddy up'
