Nigeria making impressive progress against polio

Bill Gates says he is impressed with the progress Nigeria

has made against polio and urges partners in the fight

to eradicate the disease not to let up.
Gates, cochair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,

shared personal observations from his June trip

to Nigeria on his blog, Gates Notes.

The post, along with others about polio,

are appearing this week on the Gates Foundation blog, Foundation Notes.
In addition, the Gates Foundation website is highlighting two videos

produced in June for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
"I was very excited to visit northern Nigeria in June,

because the progress there since my last visit in February 2009

has been especially impressive," Gates writes.

As of 20 July, only six cases of the wild poliovirus

have been reported in Nigeria this year,

compared with 346 during the same period in 2009.
The Gates Foundation has given Rotary US$355 million in grants

for its work to eradicate polio.

In response, Rotary has committed to raising $200 million

. As of 30 June, Rotary has raised $141.2 million.
On his blog, Gates says he spent most of his first day in the northern state of Kano,

which has been vulnerable to polio,

meeting with community leaders, visiting a local health center,

and stopping at a school where students were studying the Quran in Arabic.
"On the streets and most everywhere else we went,

I noticed so many young children around," he writes

. "Nigeria has more people by far than any other African country,

and more than 40 percent of them are under the age of 15.

That makes polio immunization a big challenge."
Gates adds that during his trip,

he learned about creative approaches to inform

Nigerians about polio immunization.

Pro-immunization messages are being woven into

the plotlines of popular TV shows,

and one of Nigeria's major mobile phone service providers

has agreed to send about 25 million free text messages

about polio and health.
He also mentions the importance of engaging local leaders

and says the 'commitment from Nigeria's leaders has been crucial'

to the fight against polio in the country.

While in the capital city of Abuja,

he had dinner with the minister of health,

and the next day met with the nation's new president, Goodluck Jonathan.
One of the videos on the Gates Foundation website

praises efforts that have reduced the threat of polio

by 99 percent but stresses the need to finish the job.

"If you were an athlete, you would never only run 99 percent of the race,"

a voiceover on the video announces.

"An astronaut wouldn't fly only 99 percent of the way to the moon,

and a firefighter would never just put out 99 percent of a fire."

Home Is Where My Heart Is”

“Home is Where My Heart Is” photographic exhibition

is the culmination of a project that partners

young emerging photographers with young homeless people,

who are asked to take a photo that captures their interpretation of home.
Help Rotary Club of Crawley raise awareness of homelessness in Western Australia

and raise funds for Street Swags

which was founded in 2005 by a Brisbane school teacher, Jean Madden,

while watching a documentary on homelessness that

highlighted the negative effects lack of sleep

and sleeping on cement had on physical and mental health.

These specially designed swags are portable,

easy to roll up, waterproof and cheap.
This event is run by the Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia (YACWA)

in partnership with Propel Youth Arts WA.

Rotary Club of Crawley wishes to thank YACWA

Rotary Clubs of Boulder, Hannans and Kalgoorlie

President Sue of Kalgoorlie Club was on hand to congratulate

Jim Fleming PP of Boulder Club who had headed the organising committee

formed by the 3 Rotary Clubs over three years to bring the RYDA event to fruition.

RYDA in the Eastern Goldfields, WA
There can only be one first.

The first RYDA Event outside the metropolitan area

was conducted in the Eastern Goldfields during July 2010.
The Rotary Clubs of Boulder, Hannans’ and Kalgoorlie

hosted more than 110 students from John Paul College,

Eastern Goldfields Senior High School

and Goldfields Baptist College for the RYDA Day.
The feedback was very positive;

therefore a RYDA day in 2011 is being planned.
The teachers attending were especially impressed

with the format and content of the six sessions.

They offered their appreciation of the work and co-ordination

necessary to bring the specialist presenters together.

The teachers were positive about the messages the students

were being given before they gained a driver’s licence

Rotary Clubs of Applecross and Melville

This is what happened a few hours after members

of the Rotary Club of Applecross finished hanging paintings

in the Garden City Shopping Centre, late Sunday afternoon.

About midnight, a stolen four wheel drive was driven through

plate glass doors into the Centre and through the display,

on its way to a ram-raid on an outlet in the Centre.

The Art Show is a combined annual project

by the Rotary Clubs of Melville and Applecross.

Rotary Club of Southern Districts

SOUTHERN DISTRICTS SPONSORS POLIO PLUS AWARENESS EVENING

The new Rotary Club of Southern Districts started the year

off with a bang by conducting a Polio Plus Awareness Evening

at its usual meeting venue on the 20 July.
With assistance from the Post Polio Network

the club invited along some 8 local former polio sufferers

and their partners to help celebrate the approach

of the total eradication of the disease worldwide.

The guests included two of the local Members of Parliament

a journalist from the Gosnells Examiner

and the President of the Rotary Club of Kenwick, Sam Youseff,
a wonderful crowd of 52 in all and quite a buzz in the air.
PDG Hugh Langridge set the scene with a concise

and interesting summary of the progress towards the eradication of polio

that has been made in recent times and gave an indication

of the cautious excitement that is mounting in Rotary

as the opportunity for a final victory approaches.
Tessa Jupp from Post Polio Network, WA

gave an interesting presentation on the treatment

and care of late onset post polio symptoms.

In many respects the late onset post polio effects

can be worse than the initial disease.
The Post Polio Network is not funded by Government

and relies entirely on donations for its survival.

It is the only organisation in WA and one of only a few in Australia

that focus entirely on assisting those with late onset post polio symptoms.

There have been 3 epidemics in WA – 1948, 1951 and 1955
Each of these left victims.
The 1955 outbreak affected 6000 Western Australians

Polio doesn’t differentiate – it hits all walks of life

There was also rush for a vaccine in the early 50’s
and haste bought problems where some patients contracted
the disease as a direct result of the vaccination

The oldest Polio Survivor in WA was currently 105 and going well.
The last reported case as a 59 year old female
who contracted the disease in 1995.
There have been 5 cases since 1980

Orders should be placed initially through Rotarian Sue Herbert

then subsequently orders can be over the internet.
Peter said "Most households consume a minimum

of half a bottle of wine per day or 15 cartons of wine per year.

This could raise up to $360 per household per year!"

Something to think about!!

Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community.
The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection

and trauma complications from repeated pokes in the belly.

He was 71.

Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin.

Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects,

including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins,

Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain Crunch.

The grave site was piled high with flours.

Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy

as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded.

Doughboy rose quickly in show business,

but his later life was filled with turnovers.

He was not considered a very smart cookie,

wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes.

Despite being a little flakey at times,

he still was a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for millions

. Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough,

three children: John Dough, Jane Dough, and Dosey Dough,

plus they had one in the oven.

He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart.

The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

If this made you smile for even a brief second,

please rise to the occasion and take time to pass it on

and share that smile with someone else

who may be having a crumby day and kneads a lift.
