Water for Life provides clean drinking water for Haiti
By Ryan Hyland Rotary International News -- 27 January 2011

Roy Sheldrick and other members of the Rotary Club of Ancaster, Ontario, Canada,
have spent 15 years helping to provide clean drinking water
for 300,000 people in the Artibonite Valley of Haiti.
A year after a massive earthquake crippled the country,
followed by a deadly cholera outbreak,
their work in the region is more important than ever.
Sheldrick and his wife, Norma, founded Water for Life
after taking part in a service trip to Haiti with their church in 1996.
The nonprofit organization, supported by the Ancaster club
and District 7090 (parts of Canada and New York, USA),
drills wells to provide clean and accessible water in Haiti.
To date, the project has raised more than US$1.5 million for 219 wells.
It has also helped construct more than 350 latrines.
"There is a desperate need for clean water in Haiti," says Sheldrick
"The fear of cholera made the need so much worse.
More and more people are relying on our wells.
They are lifesavers."
With the main river in the Artibonite Valley tainted by cholera,
the wells are a crucial source of clean and accessible water.
Wells have been installed in schools and medical centers,
including Albert Schweitzer Hospital, the largest medical facility in the valley.
"We had to raise money and help build a new wing
of the hospital because of the cholera outbreak.
They were treating more patients for cholera than for trauma
following the earthquake," says Sheldrick.
Humanitarian grants
Since 1998, the Ancaster club and its Haitian partners
have been awarded Rotary Foundation humanitarian grants
totaling $672,093 for well and latrine projects.
The grants have helped the program become more sustainable.

The Carine Community Fair will be held again on Sunday 20 March 2011,
and we are now calling for expressions of interest
from stallholders who wish to participate.
Now in 3rd decade, the Fair has grown to become one of the major annual events
in the northern suburbs.
It is designed to give community groups with limited resources an opportunity
to raise their own funds which otherwise may not have been possible.
Organisations which have benefited in the past by using the Fair
as a means of supplementing their own fund raising efforts include
scouting groups, Silver Chain, Motor Neurone Disease Association,
Red Cross, school P&C’s, junior sporting clubs and the like.
In addition, the event provides participants with an opportunity
to engage with a large number of visitors from the surrounding area
who are drawn to the Fair to see a variety of fun
and interesting attractions in a safe and friendly atmosphere.

Stall holders wishing to participate can obtain an application form
with the terms and conditions attached,
by e-mail at russell.hodson@stillcon.com.au

200 chairs and 40 desks ready for the next container

The following is part of a lengthy email that arrived
this morning from Jenny Coles – PA to Kirsty Gusmao.

The first two containers were a huge learning curve
and the successful delivery was due in no small way, to Daryl Mills –
RAWCS man on the ground in Timor.
No one has more experience when it comes to containers, customs and the Timorese way.
The majority of tables and chairs were delivered to the Ministry of Education
and gratefully received by the Director General of Education, Mr. Apolinario Magno.
He was responsible for ensuring the distribution to the neediest of schools
in and around the districts.
We then had over three hundred tables and chairs delivered to my office
at the Prime Minister’s residence where we loaded up trucks
to personally deliver the tables and chairs to two new schools that Kirsty has just built
– one in Ostico and the other at Festau – both in the Eastern part of the island.
Please let me know if you would like photos of the joyous reception with the children.
We now once again have a ‘stack’ of tables and chairs at the residence
earmarked for two new schools and I understand a container
was delivered yesterday to the Ministry of Education.
I spoke to Daryl today and he was on his way to meet back on site
to try and learn a little more as to where these will be delivered to
– once again I have asked for photos if you would like them.
The other goods are being distributed through Rotary channels
to teachers, nuns and church groups who work tirelessly
in getting supplies to the most needy.
On behalf of the Minister for Education, Mr. Joao Cancio
and Kirsty in her capacities of Goodwill Ambassador
for Education and Honorary Ambassador for Rotary Timor-Leste,
please accept our most humble and sincere appreciation
for all the efforts of so many friends behind the scenes in making this happen.
Kindest regards,
Jenny.
Ms. Jenny Coles,
Personal Assistant to HE. Kirsty Sword Gusmao,
Chairwoman of the Alola Foundation and
Goodwill Ambassador for Education, Timor- Leste.

thanks to "Container" Cleve M

Thought for the Day

SMILE!!

Matt went into Doc Steven's office for his annual checkup,
and the Doc asked if there was anything unusual he should know about.
That left it pretty wide open,
so he told the Doc that he found it real strange how his suit
must have shrunk just sitting in his closet because it didn't fit
when he went to get ready for a wedding recently.
The Doc said, "Suits don't shrink just sittin' there.
You probably just put on a few pounds, Matt."
"That's just it, Doc, I know I haven't gained a single pound since the last time I wore it."
"Well, then," said Doc, "You must have a case of Furniture Disease."
"What in the world is Furniture Disease?"
"Furniture Disease is when you reach that stage in life
when your chest starts sliding down into your drawers."

I was surprised to know such technology exists.

They have used a sophisticated time based algorithm to do so.

IRISH CASH BAILOUT PACKAGE

It is a soft day in a small Irish town.
The rain is beating down and the streets are deserted.
Times are tough, everybody is in debt,
and everybody lives on credit.
On this particular day a rich German tourist is driving through the town,
stops at the local hotel and lays a €100 note on the desk,
telling the hotel owner he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs
in order to pick one to spend the night.
The owner gives him some keys and,
as soon as the visitor has walked upstairs,
the hotelier grabs the €100 note and runs next door
to pay his debt to the butcher.
The butcher takes the €100 note and runs down the street
to repay his debt to the pig farmer.
The pig farmer takes the €100 note
and heads off to pay his bill at the supplier of feed and fuel.
The guy at the Farmers' Co-op takes the €100 note
and runs to pay his drinks bill at the pub.
The publican slips the money along to the local prostitute drinking at the bar,
who has also been facing hard times
and has had to offer him "services" on credit.
The hooker then rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill
to the hotel owner with the €100 note.
The hotel proprietor then places the €100 note back on the counter
so the rich traveler will not suspect anything.
At that moment the traveler comes down the stairs,
picks up the €100 note, states that the rooms are not satisfactory,
pockets the money, and leaves town.
No one produced anything.
No one earned anything.
However, the whole town is now out of debt
and looking to the future with a lot more optimism.
And that, Ladies and Gentlemen,
is how the bailout package works.

ed........only an Irishman would send me this....thanks Brian

How cool is this!!!
Interesting
This year we will experience 4 unusual dates....
1/1/11 - 1/11/11 - 11/1/11 - 11/11/11...
.NOW go figure this out....
take the last 2 digits of the year you were born plus the age you will be this year
and it WILL EQUAL TO 111!...
