“Manzoor is
our miracle
exclaims the young man, face shining.
Two-and-a-half-year-old
Manzoor is
by his uncle’s excitement.
he is busy eyeing the boiled sweet.
in the outstretched hand of a village elder
on the other side of the room.
The boy
gets up decisively,
and trots across the carpet. He grabs the
candy in a pudgy hand.
and gobbles it down with relish.
Just a few
months ago, Manzoor could not walk.
His left
leg was paralysed by the polio virus.
In a
neighbouring district, Saima, fidgets with her hennaed fingers
while her father pours tea. Small for her 11
years,
Saima still favours her right side, although.
the paralysis caused by the virus is easing.
As her father tells the story of her recent
illness,
her
grandfather puts his arm around the girl’s shoulders,
embracing her warmly.
Polio is
still endemic in Afghanistan.
– one of
the last two countries in the world.
Since the
start of 2023,
six children have been diagnosed with the
disease,
all of them in Nangarhar Province,
a rural
area in the east of the country.
Saima and Manzoor are lucky:
six months after the onset of symptoms,
it looks like they will make a full recovery.
Two of the six were not so lucky;
one boy
remains very
in the limbs affected, and one girl died.

supporters from over 30 countries,
across every
region of the world,
joined the Make Polio History campaign
to tell global partners, donors,
and
polio-affected country governments that eradication
is possible and urgently needed now.

World polio Day dinner at
Perth Rotary - Western Australia
was another exceptional evening.
We were fortunate to meet and hear about some.
of the experiences of SengBou
Addheka
and the enormous impact she is making on lives
in Cambodia.
We also saw the auction of a
very special piece of memorabilia –
an authenticated 1935 handwritten note from
Paul Harris
(the founder of Rotary
International)
when he visited Australia.
All funds raised went towards eradicating
polio.

campaign to eradicate polio on
World Polio Day 2023
with a special guest from Cambodia.
Despite contracting polio when
she was 2 years old,
Addheka survived the killing
fields of the Khmer Rouge
as a teenager working the in the
tropical rice fields of
Cambodia.
Over 1.5 million healthy people did not live.
to see the end of those horrific Pol Pot
years.
Addheka now runs the Khmer
School of Languages
and founded the Aid Project of Mercy,
facilitating education of children
and helping the poorest families
in rural Cambodia
to break the cycle of poverty.
During the first half of the 20th
century, frequent epidemics,
mainly affecting children under five, saw
polio
become the most feared disease in the
world.
Many who survived the disease faced lifelong
consequences.
Deformed limbs meant they needed leg braces,
crutches or wheelchairs
and some needed to use breathing
devices like the iron lung,
an artificial respirator invented for
treatment of polio patients.
Many victims also suffered emotional distress
and loneliness with long separations from
family
, while hospitalized and in
rehabilitation facilities,
where survivors spent long periods
painfully trying
to regain the use of paralyzed muscles.
In the early 1950s, the first
successful vaccine,
which was by injection, was created by US
physician Jonas Salk.
and was soon widely used throughout
the world.
This was followed in the late 60's by the oral
Sabin vaccine.
Unfortunately for
Barbara Johnson,
the distribution of the vaccine to
school children came too late.
While hers was considered a 'mild
case',
she remained bedridden for many months.
Her sister recalls her screaming and crying
constantly.
The family doctor made a house call
every day,
her legs had to be
and she recalls taking some vile
tasting medication.
Barbara herself has very little memory
of how
long she was bed ridden.
but does recall being devastated that she had
missed many,
many months of the dancing lessons,
she loved.
Fortunately, she was eventually able
to do that
and went on to become a dance
teacher.
Barbara also told of a neighbour
child, who had contracted Polio.
and ended up wearing calipers and an elevated
boot.
for the rest of his life.
He never complained but turned his hand to
music.
Barbara is grateful that she is one
of the lucky ones,
who made a good recovery. However
, she is well aware that the
polio virus stays in the body.
and, just as chicken pox can return as
shingles, muscle weakness.
may return many, many years after the original
infection.
. For now, she counts her blessing.

Busselton Geographe Bay Rotary
have a fleet of small yachts operating,
out of the Port Geographe marina
and a crew of experienced skippers keen to
take young and old,
able bodied and people with disabilities,
anyone in fact who's keen to enjoy a sail.
The yachts are small, two person
craft that sit low in the water,
and they zip along at what seems like 100kph,
but the boats are unsinkable and
cannot be tipped over,
so safety is the number one priority.
This Wednesday morning, from
9.00am,
anyone wanting to enjoy a sail
for just $5 can present themselves,
at the Port Geographe marina and
experience the thrill of sailing.
The weather forecast is perfect
and our shore crew and skippers,
are waiting to give you the thrill of your
life.
