More than 50,000 aided
By Ray Stewart
Rotary Club of Narre Warren, Vic
Consultant, ShelterBox Australia
Past Governor, District 9820
As donations from Australian Rotarians and friends
climb beyond $2 million again this year,
our many supporters can take heart that people in Colombia, Congo (DRC),
Gaza, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Namibia, Somaliland and Sudan
have been provided with shelter, comfort and dignity as a result.
Also of great importance, those donations have funded hundreds of ShelterBoxes
now strategically pre-positioned in five locations around the world –
including in Australia – ready for the next inevitable disasters.
Since 2003 donations to ShelterBox Australia exceed $6 million
and that has or will provide humanitarian aid
to more than 50,000 people in need at times of crisis.

D9450

The Rotary Club of Heirisson is part of Rotary District 9450,
the largest (in area) Rotary district in the world.
The Club's name comes from the small, sandy island in the middle of the Swan River
that bisects Perth city.
Heirisson Island was named after Midshipman Francois Heirisson
who rowed a longboat up the Swan River to where modern Perth now stands.
Heirisson was on the French ship "Le Naturaliste"
which was part of the Nicholas Baudin scientific expedition (1801-1804)
Today Heirisson Island supports the Causeway Bridge that carries
vehicle traffic into and out of the city each day.

News and information from Districts
9450, 9460, 9470
-------------------------------------------

D9450

WA Police officer Jason Gentilli and CEO of the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley
Peter Stubbs present their freshly complted application forms to
President Jim Bailey of the Rotary Club of Kununurra
Community meetings spark the revival of Kununurra
In February they thought they might have to return their Charter,
but by April, the Rotary Club of Kununurra had been revived.
Chartered in 1986, the club was for many years admired throughout District 9450
for the work it did and the support it gave to various Rotary programs.
It had a strong local identity through its community projects
and fundraising effort and it was a strong supporter of The Rotary Foundation.
It sent and received Youth Exchange students each year,
sent young people to Perth for Rotary youth leadership programs,
selected candidates for Group Study Exchange –
you name it its members were involved,
even though they were 3300km from the centre of most Rotary District activity.
But by February this year that had all changed and club Treasurer Jim Bailey
realised something needed to be done.
So he got together with Frank Rodriguez, Grant Lodge, Paul Wainwright,
Gordon Tomkin and Bruce Russell and decided to conduct
two community information meetings.
They gathered the names of all business and professional people in the town
and sent out 114 invitations.
Sixty people accepted – which meant changing to a bigger venue!
District Governor Sue Rowell was so impressed
she sent PDG Colin Thorniley to Kununurra to assist.
In the days before the first meeting, President Jim Bailey
and PDG Colin met several local business identities,
including the CEO of the local Council, the principal of the High School,
the Director of Health, senior local Police and a representative of a group
working with the local aboriginal community.
There were 42 people at the March 19 meeting that included
presentations by PDG Colin,
President Jim Bailey and a recently returned exchange student, Kara Lipscombe.
Membership forms were distributed and the results were astounding,
with 11 applications completed that night
and a further five received over the next week.
Another 26 people attended the second meeting on April 2,
and seven more applications were received.
‘‘It shows what can be done if a group of people are determined to rebuild a declining club,’’ President Jim said.
‘‘Although I am confident we will get a few more applications
we now have a club of 42 members
and can really get down to doing some worthwhile community work
and support the many worthwhile Rotary programs.
It was a lot of work but it has been well and truly worth it.”
