-
I have had a longstanding desire to return to the goldfields
where I can use my skills as a physiotherapist
to provide much needed services to remote communities
and the Indigenous populations.
Having lived in Leonora my entire life,
I have seen first hand the hardship that many Indigenous Australians
experience due to diseases or disabling accidents.
My family and my Aboriginal background are well known

throughout the Goldfields.
Most have watched me grow up and have seen the journey I have made
in pursuing my studies.
I understand and speak some of the Wongutha language
and have always been seen as a leader among my peers
and the local community.
This puts me in a position where I inflict valuable changes
within theAboriginal Community
My commitment to my community, my people
and the respect I have towards my Aboriginal heritage would be essential
and I strongly feel that I’ll be able to improve
Indigenous health as a physiotherapist

There have been 3 epidemics in WA – 1948, 1951 and 1955
Each of these left victims.
The 1955 outbreak affected 6000 Western Australians
Polio doesn’t differentiate – it hits all walks of life
There was also rush for a vaccine in the early 50’s
and haste bought problems where some patients contracted
the disease as a direct result of the vaccination
The oldest Polio Survivor in WA was currently 105 and going well.
The last reported case as a 59 year old female
who contracted the disease in 1995.
There have been 5 cases since 1980.

"Quote of the Week"

SMILE!!!!!!!!

Bubba and Billy Bob
While Bubba and Billy Bob were in the local Wal-Mart,
they decided to get in on the weekly charity raffle.
They bought five tickets each at a dollar a pop.
The following week, when the raffle was drawn,
each had won a prize.
Billy Bob won 1st place; a years supply of gourmet spaghetti sauce
and extra long spaghetti.
Bubba won 6th prize;
a toilet brush.
About a week or so had passed when the men met back at Wal-Mart.
Bubba asked Billy Bob how he liked his prize,
to which Billy Bob replied,
"Great!, I love spaghetti!"
Billy Bob asked Bubba,
"How 'bout you, how's the toilet brush?”
"Not so good," replied Bubba,
"I reckon I'm gonna go back to paper."

A flying saucer landed at a gas station on a lonely country road.
The two space aliens inside seemed completely unconcerned about detection;
in fact, the letters "UFO" were emblazoned in big, bold letters
on one side of their shiny craft.
As the station owner stood and gawked in silence, paralyzed with shock,
his young blonde attendant nonchalantly filled up the tank
and waved to the two aliens as they took off.
"Do you realize what just happened?" the station owner finally uttered.
"Yeah," said the blonde attendant. "So?"
"Didn't you see the space aliens in that vehicle?!"
"Yeah," repeated the blonde attendant. "So?"
"Didn't you see the letters 'UFO' on the side of that vehicle?!"
"Yeah," repeated the blonde attendant. "So?"
"Don't you know what 'UFO' means?!"
The blonde attendant rolled his eyes
. "Good grief, boss!
I've been working here for six years.
Of course I know what 'UFO' means
'Unleaded Fuel Only.'"

The RI President Ray Klinginsmith’s monthly message
July 2010
Winds of Change
What an amazing world!

Advances in technology are happening so quickly that
they cause constant changes in our businesses and professions.
Yet about one-third of the world’s population is still living
at a subsistence level with little change in their lives.
It is a stark contrast and a cause for concern.
Rotary has both a distinguished heritage and a bright future.

My primary task as president is to enhance the vitality
and viability of Rotary clubs and to enable them
to succeed in the midst of societal changes.
This is an important task because it is the clubs that address
and alleviate the root problems of society
and thereby make the world a better place.
Wind of change was a new and significant phrase

when I was a Rotary Scholar in South Africa in the early 1960s.
It is serendipitous that the phrase that was first publicized
in my host city of Cape Town is now applicable to Rotary
as we contemplate the changes in society that dictate
some corresponding changes in our organization.
The phrase is now better known as winds of change.
We are currently enjoying a culture of innovation at Rotary International.

We have the ability to look at all of our programs
and practices to see if they can be improved,
even as we steadfastly maintain our core values.
I hope many Rotarians will take advantage of this opportunity
to identify and implement improvements
in their clubs and districts as well.
Rotary lives and breathes in our 33,000 clubs,

and it is the clubs that improve lives by
Building Communities – Bridging Continents.
If we succeed in helping clubs to become
Bigger, Better, and Bolder in the next year,
then it will be clear that the best days of Rotary are still ahead.
We are fortunate to be Rotarians!
Together, we can make the world a better place!

“If we want to see another century of Rotary,
we must make Rotary more attractive to young people.
Many young people share our beliefs.
To get them involved in Rotary,
we must concentrate on activities that capture their attention
, so they are willing to make commitment.
It is not the responsibility of young people to come to our clubs.
It is ours to invite them.”

PROBUS

My role as Rotary District 9470 Probus Chairman
has concluded with the amalgamation of the new Rotory Districts.
I have enjoyed my role and have been able,
with the assistance of three Rotary Clubs in 9470,
namely, Byford Rotary Club, Darling Range Rotary Club
and recently Rotary Club of York, now Canning Brdge
in assisting me to form three new Probus Club.,
For those three years I was on the 9470
District Community ServiCe Committee.
I wish to thank those Rotary Clubs for their help.
As we know, Probus is a Community Service Program
and I have done my best to get the message across.
It was disappointing, when I took over this job in July, 2007.,
I contacted, 17 Rotary Clubs in 9470 and received two replys.
During the three years,
I was on the Committee of the Perth Rendezvous Committee.
At the time I was a member of the Victoria Park Rotary Club
and was given leave of absence to work on this committee.
which was most appreciated.
In January, 2010. I decided to leave Victoria Park Rotary
and transfered to Rossmoyne Rotary Club,
I am now on the Committee of the Probus Association of WA
Once again thank you to those Rotary Clubs which supported me in my Role,
as Rotary Probus District Chairman,
Yours in Rotary,
Bill Lake

The George Sipman Award
was introduced by the Club
back in 1991 to honour the Booragoon member
who, in the opinion of the incumbent president,
made the most significant and unsung contribution
during his or her year.
The award was named after George Sipman,
who had just stepped down after six years of untiring
and uncomplaining service as secretary.
The choice of George Sipman Award recipient
is made personally each year by the outgoing president.
It is a measure of the contribution made by the club by
Tom Pearson that this year he has been selected for the
George Sipman Award for an unprecedented fourth time.

where she is a Member of the local Rotary Club.
Her Club comprises 11 Members of which only three are male
but they are hopeful of increasing their number.
Wendy has just spent time up at Coral Bay and Exmouth and,
as a keen spear fishing and under water photography person,
was very impressed with the Ningaloo Reef and the surrounding country.
She was particularly impressed with the coral,
although we do not have the soft coral because of the environment.
Wendy saw all sorts of fish including whale sharks,
dugong, manta rays, tiger shark, whales and numerous others.
The friendliness ofpeople she met was so pleasing compared
with other places and she felt safe, even being on her own.
The extensive beaches, compared to the small beach areas
at home were an eye opener.
Madagascar is an island 1600 kilometres North to South

Poverty is a major problem and the island

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

SMILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The light turned yellow, just in front of him.
He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk
, even though he could have beaten the red light
by accelerating through the intersection.
The tailgating woman was furious and honked her horn,
screaming in frustration, as she missed her chance to get through the intersection,
dropping her cell phone and makeup.
As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window
and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer.
The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up.
He took her to the police station where she was searched,
fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a holding cell.
After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door.
She was escorted back to the booking desk
where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.
He said, ''I'm very sorry for this mistake.
You see I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn,
flipping off the guy in front of you and cussing a blue streak at him.
I noticed the 'What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker,
the 'Choose Life' license plate holder,
the 'Follow Me to Sunday-School' bumper sticker,
and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk,
so naturally... .
I assumed you had stolen the car.''

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street,
going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar.
He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars
and slowed down when he thought he saw something.
As his car passed, no children appeared.
Instead, a brick smashed into the Jag's side door!
He slammed on the brakes and backed the Jag back to the spot
where the brick had been thrown.
The angry driver then jumped out of the car,
grabbed the nearest kid and pushed him up against a parked car, shouting,
"What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing?
That's a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money.
Why did you do it?"
The young boy was apologetic.
"Please, mister...please, I'm sorry, but I didn't know what else to do."
He pleaded. "I threw the brick cause no one else would stop..."
With tears dripping down his face and off his chin,
the youth pointed to a spot just around a parked car.
"It's my brother," he said.
"He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up."
Now sobbing, the boy asked the stunned executive,
"Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair?
He's hurt and he's too heavy for me."
Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow
the rapidly swelling lump in his throat.
He hurriedly lifted the handicapped boy back into the wheelchair,
then took out a linen handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh scrapes and cuts.
A quick look told him everything was going to be okay
. "Thank you, and may God bless you," the grateful child told the stranger.
Too shook up for words, the man simply watch ed the boy
push his wheelchair-bound brother down the sidewalk toward their home.
It was a long, slow walk back to the Jaguar.
The damage was very noticeable,
but the driver never bothered to repair the dented door.
He kept the dent there to remind him of this message:
"Don't go through life so fast that someone
has to throw a brick at you to get your attention."
