Tips for member retention

Traveling together to club projects and creating a variety show as a fundraiser were just a couple of the ideas Rotarians offered during a packed workshop on member retention at the 2010 RI Convention in Montréal, Québec, Canada.
Mike McGovern, 2009-10 Membership Development and Retention Committee chair and past RI vice president, said the workshop he moderated, "Closing the Back Door," generated fantastic audience participation and produced many valuable ideas for retaining members.
"It moved so quickly, and so many people were able to share their comments, that it was like a prototype of how Rotary functions ought to be," McGovern said. "It was one of those workshops where more seats were filled at the end than at the beginning."
Three panelists – Ron Beaubien, a past RI director and past RI membership committee chair, and Hendreen "Dean" Rohrs and Pete Snider, 2009-10 regional Rotary International membership coordinators -- each briefly shared some opening remarks about member retention. Participants were then asked to turn to a neighbor and discuss strategies that had worked in their clubs. Finally, audience members were invited to step up to one of three microphones and share with the entire group.
"We asked them to be brief and to just give their name and club name, no titles," McGovern noted. "It worked out well and emphasized that clubs are where it's at. It tied into Rotary making clubs bigger, better, and bolder."
Workshop attendees scrambled to write down all the ideas for increasing member retention.
A sampling includes:
Make Rotary fun.
Travel together to club meetings and projects – or take a club trip together.
Form a hiking fellowship to get active outside of weekly meetings.
Go out to Sunday brunch with a group of members.
Find out what gets a member excited about Rotary.
Do a hands-on project instead of the regular meeting once a month.
Identify a signature project -- one the club is known for throughout the community.
Create a mentor committee, and offer three-year mentoring to new members.
Develop a buddy system, pairing up a new member with an existing member.
Designate someone to round up members who haven't participated in a while and drive them to the club's meetings or events.
Plan outings to involve new Rotarians and their families.
Invite families to club meetings.
Promote the practice of younger members introducing other younger members.
Organize a New Generations club to target younger professionals.

and on the 17th of August Western Australia Health Minister Kim Hames
has announced Naomi Sprigg dos Santos
as the first recipient of his International Outreach Fellowship.
Ms Sprigg dos Santos is a community nurse in Leonora
and has developed a project aimed at identifying and treating the post-natal depression.
Dr Hames says it is hoped her project will help people in Brazil,
as well as leading to new strategies to treat post-natal depression
being brought back to Australia.

the ‘Black Tie – Black Truffle’ Rotary Ball on Saturday August 14
at the Quality Hotel Lord Forrest was a glittering and memorable affair.
The who’s who of Bunbury danced the night away to the sounds
of Little Sister and Steve Johnson & the Flirtettes,
and 4 regional executive chefs whipped up a storm in the Lord Forrest kitchens.
The menus by Jim Mailes (Lamonts Margaret River),
Russel Blaikie (Must Margaret River),
Ian Frost (the Lord Forrest) and John Dudley (the Singing Chef) were simply stunning.
More importantly Auctioneer Cecily Robertson ensured those in attendance

put their hands in their pockets for three very good causes –
beneficiaries Men’s Sheds, Milligan and Youth Care.
Items sold under Cecily’s fast and furious hammer included
a week’s accommodation in the glamorous Les Grand Moulins France,
a limo ride home, a Trek bicycle, 2 full pages in the Bunbury Mail and a helicopter ride.
While still waiting on final figures,
it is estimated more than $20,000 was raised from the evening.

The Australind Pre-Mix Rotary Auction has raised nearly $430,000
for the community in the last 19 years and is one of Bunbury’s
biggest annual fund-raising events.
Beneficiaries have included the In Town Centre,
the Val Lishman Health Research Foundation and Children’s Leukaemia Research Fund.
This year’s beneficiaries will include Bunbury Youth Care,

in Booragoon on Sunday 19th September from 8am to 8pm.

The Rotary Club of Attadale is seeking your club’s support for MS sufferers
throughout Western Australia through our project in one of three ways.
Firstly and most importantly, you can identify someone in your club

or associated with a member (s) of your club who would be willing
and able to register a team for the event.
They would then find up to 12 other people who would form a team
under that person’s captaincy.
All would register on line and then add photos, messages etc to encourage
other people to support them in the event.
There is a registration fee of $30 per registrant which goes to MS but in return,
each swimmer receives food and drinks after their swim
and a participant’s pack which includes an event ‘t’ shirt, a swimming cap
and a number of other benefit items.
The communication possibilities are numerous and are explained on the website.
Your club and its members can support the team by donating on line.
All donations over $2 are tax deductible
and the donor will be automatically issued with an emailed receipt by MSWA.
It is a particularly easy and user-friendly system.
You can even provide your team member with a message of support
and your donation will be displayed if you are happy to be acknowledged publicly.
All contributions, no matter how small or large, will assist greatly.
Some donation options are shown on the website
but there are facilities to donate any amount.

to Africa in recent years – a fantastic international project.
Rotarians in Manjimup are now supporting a similar project
to a village in Papua and New Guinea
and will appreciate whatever help you can give.
Our project is in partnership with local Adventists and will run for three months.

and we are asking interested Rotarians to assist in three ways:
To provide surplus books that are in good condition.

To provide a Club contact to coordinate member’s efforts;

A Touching Story
As a bagpiper, I play many gigs.
Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play
at a graveside service for a homeless man.
He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery.
As I was not familiar with the area,

I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions.
I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone
and the hearse was nowhere in sight.
There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.
I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late.
I went to the side of the grave and looked down
and the vault lid was already in place.
I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.
The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around.

I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends.
I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.
And as I played 'Amazing Grace,' the workers began to weep.
They wept, I wept, we all wept together.
When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car.
Though my head hung low, my heart was full.
As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say,
"I never seen nothin' like that before
and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."
Apparently I'm still lost....
