New Orleans radio station to stream Polio Unmasked concert online
Rotary International News -- 19 May 2011
If you can't make it to New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, for the 2011 RI Convention, 21-25 May,
you can still join in the fun from the Crescent City.
The Rotary Foundation’s Polio Unmasked concert -
- headlined by New Orleans music legends Kermit Ruffins and Irma Thomas --
will be streamed live 23 May at http://www.wwoz.org/
from Mardi Gras World, on the banks of the Mississippi River.
The event, celebrating Rotary’s progress toward eradicating polio,
will be broadcast by New Orleans radio station WWOZ.
Ruffins is a charismatic trumpeter and singer who embodies the deep jazz traditions of New Orleans,
often evoking comparisons to the late Louis Armstrong.
Thomas, a Grammy Award winner, is known as the “soul queen of New Orleans”
for her powerful and expressive approach to soul and rhythm and blues.
The broadcast will include interviews with Rotarians
who will explain the significance of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
Polio Unmasked is a one-time merger of three annual donor-recognition events:
the Bequest Society Reception,
Major Donor Dinner,
and Arch C. Klumph Society Dinner.
It will bring together the Foundation’s staunchest supporters in appreciation
of the tremendous progress that has been made
toward meeting Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge,
the organization’s response to $355 million in grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Mardi Gras World is home to Blaine Kern Studios,
the world’s leading maker of floats, sculptures, and entertainment props,
and the creative force that brings New Orleans’ most colorful Mardi Gras
parades and celebrations to life each year

SUCCESS SENSORY GARDEN
[in conjunction with the Senses Foundation]
In May 2010 Senses Foundation opened its first deaf blind
specific accommodation facility in Success.
specific accommodation facility in Success.
The house was specifically designed to accommodate
of the needs of the three young male residents,
addressing their unique environmental,
visual, cognitive and mobility needs.
of the needs of the three young male residents,
addressing their unique environmental,
visual, cognitive and mobility needs.
Originally the outdoor area was undeveloped and from our research to ascertain
the most stimulating environment for the residents
we decided to source funding and assistance to build a sensory garden.
Through careful and imaginative design it is possible to create landscapes
that offer a wide range of sensory experiences to people who are deaf blind.
In sensory gardens, plants and other design elements are selected
with the intention to provide experiences for seeing,
smelling, hearing, touching, movement and tasting.
Our vision was for an outdoor area that incorporated a sensory garden,
tactile and functional along with an appropriate recreational area
that would accommodate our clients’ capabilities.
We initially approached the Rotary Club of Victoria Park,
as this was a large project eventually The Rotary Clubs of Victoria Park, Bentley-Curtin, Attadale,
Rotaract in Gosnells and Kent Street High School Interactors
all contributed to making our dream a reality.

Lisa Hercock along with another exchange student lay wreaths on ANZAC Day in Belguim
Extract from letter Lisa sent to her club
"The 25th of April, for ANZAC day, was truly a moving for me. Myself and other Australian and New Zealand exchange students were invited by the Australian embassy to atten to official ceremonies for Anzac day in Ypres. To be at the site where our soldiers lost their lives, to see the unmarked graves, to be included in the ceremonies by laying a wreath and crosses… Words can’t explain how this day affected me. I listened to letters from one fallen soldier to his lover, read by Brendan Nelson, and was reminded of how much these Australians lost. My Australian spirit and pride for my country and people was never as strong as it was in this moment. My experience at ANZAC day in Belgium was something I really wanted to share with the club. This, I feel, was a key moment in my exchange… I saw how the people of the Flanders region in Belgium payed respect to our people, how they honoured the memories of our ANZACs"
