June is Rotary Fellowship Month

Golf fellowship to tee off at championship course

By Ryan Hyland
Rotary International News -- 16 June 2011

More than 200 golfers from around the world will tee off in August
in the International Golfing Fellowship of Rotarians 48th World Championship
at the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina, USA.
Hosted by District 7690, the tournament will be held 21-27 August
on three courses at Pinehurst, which is consistently ranked by Golf Magazine
as one of the top golfing destinations in the world.
Ray Taylor, event chair and past district governor, says that golf is only one
of the attractions for the Rotarians who will gather for the event..
"The appeal is the course itself, but it's the magnetism of meeting old friends
and making new ones that makes the week so much fun," says Taylor,
who will be attending his 20th golf fellowship tournament.
 "I have made friends from around the world;
I probably would have never met them if it weren't for the golf fellowship."
The fellowship, which is one of 58 recognized by the RI Board of Directors,
began in 1963 and has more than 1,500 members from 60 countries.
 Fellowships bring Rotarians, their spouses,
and Rotaractors together to share common interests,
explore new opportunities to serve, enhance the Rotary experience through fun activities,
and further vocational development through friendship.
Each June, they are celebrated through Rotary Fellowships Month.
"Fellowships are important because they add another dimension to the organization," says Taylor. "International friendship is the glue that holds Rotary together."
Here’s a sampling of Rotary fellowships:

• The International Fellowship of Authors and Writers,
which encompasses both professionals and amateurs,
was approved by the Board in January.
It has members from Argentina, Australia, Canada, India, Nigeria, and the United States.

• "Surface Above Self" is the motto of the International Fellowship of Rotarian Scuba Divers,
whose members travel the world for underwater adventure
and contribute to a local Rotary club project or cause on each expedition.
Their most recent trips include a 10-day cruise through the Maldives
and a weeklong excursion to Little Cayman Island.

• Members of the International Home Exchange Fellowship of Rotarians
stay in one another’s homes, either for vacation,
work-related stints, or special events.
The exchanges give members the opportunity
to experience different cultures and make lifelong friends.

D9465 World Peace Scholar  Lisa Craig

Peace Scholar Lisa off to Thailand
District 9465’s first Rotary World Peace Scholar, Lisa Craig,
has left Perth for Thailand to begin the studies that will equip her
to take a role in international cooperation and conflict resolution.
Lisa is one of just 70 scholars to be awarded Rotary’s unique World Peace Fellowship for 2011.
She will shortly begin studying for a masters degree in international relations
 at Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn University.
The university is home of one of the world’s six Rotary Centres for International Studies.
RI established the World Peace Fellowship program in partnership
with the universities in 1999 as a major long-term contribution to world peace.
With war, famine, poverty and disease rampant worldwide,
the Rotary Centres train scholars to develop the knowledge and tools to combat these problems.
“Today, there are still far too few mediators who are experienced practitioners
in conflict resolution,” says Paul Rogers, Professor of Peace Studies
at the University of Bradford in England.
“There is an urgent need to produce another generation of people
who can play a mediating role in the future.
This program is the most significant development in graduate work in conflict resolution in decades.”
Lisa, manager of the Peel Community Legal Services in Mandurah,
has committed herself to a career devoted to national and international cooperation
and cross-cultural understanding.
She aims to use the opportunity to continue her humanitarian works
and develop a global understanding of peace issues.
“I seek to broaden my understanding of conflict resolution
and create further opportunities to support community-based mediation
and education around human rights and justice for all people,” she said.
Lisa, who has three adult children, was nominated for the Peace Fellowship
by the Mandurah Districts Rotary Club
but had to go through an exhaustive selection process.
Every year, more than 1500 applications are received from around the world.

On a lighter note

It had a single word on it,
 "THINK!"

The next day, when he went to the men's room,
he looked at the sign and right below it, immediately above the soap dispenser,
someone had carefully lettered another sign which read,
 "THOAP!"
