Members, Family and Guests of the Rotary Club of Gosnells were present

 at the awarding of the Paul Harris Fellow by President Jeff Lewis

to PP Ken Cockman on Monday night February 13th.

Attendees at the Family Night included Ken's parents, Ross and Patricia,

themselves both PHF and Ken's wife Beryl.

As President Jeff noted, Ken has been a driven member of the Club

 and District for nearly 10 years

 - and integral in the coordination and support of Youth programs

 in both our Club and District -

 including RYLA and RYPEN,

 and was instrumental in the initiation and mentoring of the City of Gosnells Rotaract Club,

 which continues to go from strength to strength.

In addition to his role as a past AG and a present District Board member,

 Ken's mentoring on many things Rotary for new members

 and aspiring youth leaders is a credit to him -

 a most deserving award for his service.

And whilst as Sergeant he has never been short of a word this year,

 he was on this occasion !

Hi Phil,

Thank you so much for including our photo regarding the upcoming swimarathon

 in last week’s issue of Rotary Out West.

Is there any chance you could include some more info in this week’s edition?

 We are calling on as many Rotarians/partners/friends to come and be part of this global event.

 At present there are approximately 100 clubs from 5-6 continents

around the world registered to participate in the Rotary Global Swimarathon,

which has been organised and coordinated by the Rotary Club of Grantham in the UK

 to raise funds for End Polio Now.

The plan is that these registered clubs all hold their own swimarathon

 in their local communities at the same time.

 The reason for this is that as well as aiming to raise funds for End Polio Now,

 we are also attempting a new Guinness World Record

 for the greatest number of people around the world swimming at the same time.

Grantham has designated 1200-1300 hours GMT as the swimming time,

which is 8-9pm Perth time. Swimmers need to swim 100 metres non-stop

 and unassisted (four lengths of our centre’s pool) within the hour.

The Kwinana Rotary Swimarathon will be held at the Kwinana Recquatic Centre,

which is situated at the corner of Gilmore Ave and Chisham Ave in Kwinana.

 The cost of participating, and thus being part of a Guinness World Record attempt,

 will be $10 per entrant.

 Spectators are most welcome – a gold coin donation would be appreciated.

 All funds go directly to End Polio Now.

 Our local council is supporting the event by financing all pool costs.

During the evening there will be a barbeque and drinks available.

 We will be taking registrations from 7pm onwards,

 and then commencing the swim at 8pm.

This event is open to all members of the community provided they are able to swim

100 metres non-stop and unassisted (ie no flippers/floaties, etc).

A famous merchandising tycoon told the following story at a conference:

"There was a town out in the old west that had two general stores.

 Harry, who owned one of them was a workaholic.

 He opened early, stayed in the store all day and closed late.

 Even so, he barely made a living.

Larry, who ran the other store, came in at nine.

 At 10, he went out back, where he kept some cattle,

 and made all the cows turn and face north.

 After lunch, Larry went out back again and made all the cows turn and face south.

 This practice was repeated every day.

Larry's store was successful and he became wealthy."

The speaker then asked his audience if anyone could tell what principle of merchandising

was illustrated by the story.

A guy in the back stood up and said,

 "That's easy. If you want to be successful in merchandising, ...

... it is important to rotate your stock!"
