Rotaract members in East Africa unite
in service
By Sarah Maingi, Rotaract representative from Kenya
On a warm Saturday morning in April, about 100 Rotaractors
from
Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi gathered at a
community in Buterere in
Bujumbura, Burundi,
to provide households with clean drinking water.
Some of the Rotaractors, myself included, had traveled over
1,000 kilometers by road,
and all sacrificed their Easter holidays to serve.
which involves Rotaract clubs in those four countries
plus Tanzania.
We showed households how to use modern water purification
methods,
and donated jerry-cans and water pails to assist with future water
collection.
We also taught proper handwashing techniques, handed out bars of
soap,
and left reading materials that explained hygiene and sanitation.
The event was awesome and even bigger than expected.
In its
second year, REACT is drawing together young leaders
from diverse backgrounds
and empowering them
to better serve their communities.
REACT is the first all-inclusive Rotaract project of its kind in
Eastern Africa.
The aim is to alleviate household problems like disease, food
security, water,
and sanitation by focusing on communities that are most
affected
and helping them overcome barriers.
Projects are selected based on the
most immediate
need of a community in a given country.
This year’s project was hosted by the Rotaract clubs
of
Inyenyeri and Bujumbura.
We also worked in collaboration with UNICEF, Red
Cross,
Alchem International, Merck Pharmaceuticals,
the Rotary Club of Kisumu,
and Rotary clubs in Burundi.
The project is a clear way we are
Engaging Rotary and Changing
Lives.

DISBURSING THE BUSHFIRE FUND DONATIONS
Following
the devastating January bushfires in Parkerville and Stoneville,
Rotary
District 9455 Governor, Hank de Smitt,
organised a Rotary Australia
Benevolent Society (RABS)
project to receive donations toward a bushfire
appeal,
which he also publicised widely using his extensive network
of contacts
throughout Australia.
Over
the last four months, donations have been made by individuals,
corporations,
Rotary clubs and many other groups from across Australia.
The response has been
overwhelming and resulted in a total of $115,722
being raised.
Once again
Australians from all walks of life have opened their hearts
and wallets to help
total strangers in need of assistance.
The Rotary Club of Mundaring was given the responsibility of managing
and disbursing the funds received and has been working closely
with the Shire
of Mundaring to ensure this
has been done in the most effective manner.
Under the terms of the RABS project, the donations
were to go
to those people and families whose homes
were destroyed or left uninhabitable
by the fires.
Therefore the donations received were divided equally
between all
affected householders.
For privacy reasons,
the Shire of Mundaring was unable to
release the contact details
of those who have been so badly affected to us,
but
have assisted us in disbursing the funds by addressing
and posting a letter
with a cheque to the intended recipients.
The accompanying photograph [above] shows the Club President, Sue
Reid,
and two members, Lyle Favas and Mark Williamson,
signing the cheques and
covering letters in the Shire chambers.
At a recent club meeting the guest speaker
was
a local arborist and tree surgeon, Mike Byrne,
who spoke about the value of
trees in the urban environment

Rotary Club of Como
Como Club had a visit from one of our old exchange
students last week.
What a delight! Teruko Narita came to us 20 years ago as a
16 year old student.
Now she brought to see us, her husband Hajime
and her 21
month old son Yuzuru.
She told us that we had changed her life.
You can't get a
greater compliment than that.
She had a great time meeting her old host
families
and of course showing off her own.

Salut Salon "Wettstreit zu viert"
Young José Hernandez was
wanted by the police,
but before his youthful, illegal indiscretions,
his
history is a most fascinating one.
José was the illegitimate son of a nun,
and
he was raised in a convent in northeastern Spain,
near Barcelona.
Among the skills he
learned while growing up
were flute and horn playing.
Eventually he left the
convent and became a musician
of minor celebrity in the Barcelona area
.
However, as a flute player, gigs were infrequent.
Eventually “Joe”
Hernandez escaped
his low-paying musician’s job in Spain
and traveled to the
Middle East,
trying to eke out a living.
But wages were either low or
non-existent for a nun’s son
whose only skill was flute and horn playing.
Joe tried farming, but
never adjusted to rural life.
After working as a part-time farmer and pushing a
plow,
he quit that job.
Finding himself destitute in Israel,
Joe was forced
into a life of crime.
He robbed a museum in the city of Haifa, Israel,
and got
away with many of the city of Haifa’s historical relics.
The people were upset
that their historical
and religious icons had been pilfered.
The Israeli police
put out an all-points bulletin asking citizens
to be on the lookout for a
Haifa-lootin’, flutin’, tootin’ son of a nun from Barcelona,
part-time plowboy
Joe.
