Rachel Hall Beecroft spent eight weeks in Myanmar
as part of her applied field experience as a Rotary Peace Fellow
at the University of Queensland, Australia.
Rachel worked with an organization that is training civilians
to act as ceasefire monitors and witnessed how regular people’s lives
were being transformed by the peace process.

A flotilla of boats has been mobilised to spread aid across
Fiji’s 330 islands in the aftermath of Cyclone Winston
, the most powerful storm ever recorded in the southern hemisphere.
ShelterBox is using its Australian and New Zealand affiliates,
a response team from the USA,
and an alliance with  Sea Mercy, a charity that uses super-yachts and catamarans,
in order to get aid to Fiji islanders left without shelter
in the wake of Cyclone Winston.
On 20 February the most powerful storm ever recorded in the South Pacific
hit the paradise islands of Fiji with winds over 200 mph,
 torrential rain and 40ft waves.
The cyclone left 42 dead, buildings flattened and crops destroyed.
Around 35,000 people sheltered in 424 evacuation centres,
and 97 schools were damaged or destroyed.
A state of natural disaster was declared by the Fiji Government,
and they put a call out for international aid.
ShelterBox Operations Co-ordinator Phil Duloy says,
‘We already had some ShelterBox aid stored with Rotary colleagues on the islands.
Our response team from the USA were on the islands
as soon as flights were restored.
Working out of the capital Suva, they are now busy visiting smaller islands
such as Batiki, Lautoka, Kubulu and Taveuni to assess the situation and evaluate need.’

‘The United Nations estimates that as many as 350,000 people may be affected,
over a third of the Fijian population.
Fiji has 900,000 people spread over more than 300 islands,
so this will be a complex international aid operation
. ShelterBox is working in tandem with the Fiji Government
and Shelter Cluster partners

Rotary Club of Pinjarra
PINJARRA Rotary Club has raised more than $200,000
for residents who were affected by the Waroona and Yarloop bushfires.
The money is an independent bushfire appeal fund
which will go towards animal welfare and trauma counselling.
Pinjarra Rotary president Rob Davis said the club
had a lot of expertise about what the farmers and residents
 needed immediately after the fires.
“This is the most amount of money we have raised to date
so we wanted to make sure it was used in the right areas,” he said.
“Members of our club were affected by the fires
and so this helped us to understand what was needed.”
Properties affected by the fires have been visited
by working parties which the club organised
to help farmers clear their land and install new fencing.
Mr Davis said 270 volunteers had helped at 22 different farms.
“The farmers are saying the working groups are saving
them three to four weeks of work,” he said.
“We’ve also raised enough funds to offer trauma counselling
to residents until the end of June.”

Mr Davis said the counselling demand was increasing
and the club hoped to raise more funds to extend this service.

AFL Season 2016
The 2016 AFL season is upon us and team predictions are all the rage,
these come from the home of football about the West’s favourite teams:

WEST COAST
Again play exhilarating, high-pressure, skilful and inventive football
while grumbling that nobody east of the Nullarbor
gives a rat's about them and wouldn't know a Dom Sheed from a nose bleed.
 And they'd be right.

FREMANTLE

Ross Lyon celebrates his 10th season as an AFL coach
by rolling out his magnum opus,
a plan of defensive genius that covers the decline of Matthew Pavlich
by approaching games in the manner of Arsenal
in the early 1990s under George Graham
 - i.e., nil-all isn't a bad result,
and if you can pinch a 1-0 win with a late Hayden Ballantyne goal, all the better.
