Dick Smith donates $1million for Rotary to continue their work in Australia!
Well-known philanthropist Dick Smith has announced
his donation of $1 million towards alleviating the suffering of Australians
in need, today at the Rotary Club of Wahroonga meeting.
The funds will be distributed via a specific Rotary program
developed for the cause, administered by
the Rotary Australia Benevolent Society (RABS), with eligibility criteria
determined by Dick and Pip Smith.
Rotary Clubs will be responsible for identifying those recognised
by their local community who need support,
and be willing to match the requested grant on a 50/50 basis.
The Chairman of the Rotary Australia Benevolent Society,
Michael Perkins, is grateful to Dick and Pip Smith for their generous donation.
He looks forward to seeing Rotary volunteers throughout Australia
turn their project visions into reality.
The program will be launched in February 2017
and full details will be made available then.

In the meantime, for other enquiries please contact rotaryaustraliacommunitycompassionprogram@rawcs.org

Annual Remembrance Ceremony

with Donald & Kerry Coventry

Prosser Oval, Katanning

Rotary Club of Katanning

In perfect weather conditions, this year’s Annual Remembrance Service
was held at Prosser Park, on Monday night.
This annual event is run by Donald & Kerry Coventry
with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Katanning.
The opportunity is given for loved ones to remember family & friends,
who have passed away, by releasing helium balloons,
 with messages attached.
Approximately 80 people attended, of all ages.
The service was conducted by the local Anglican minister Lindy Rookyard,
with the assistance of the Wesleyan Choir.
After the short service, we watched as the balloons,
rose into the evening eastern sky.

The service was concluded with a sausage sizzle,
expertly cooked by Rotarian Peter Kerin.

Tonight the Rotary Club of Geraldton had the pleasure
of hosting visiting Rotarian from Vienna, Stefan Benesch
who is here to follow the wind as a wind-surfer.
His Rotary Club sponsors and supports extra teachers
helping primary aged schoolchildren who don't speak German at home
, to speak it more fluently and more often in all aspects of school.
This will help them to better integrate into the community.
The club also financially sponsors a school on the border of Nicaragua.
Thanks Stefan for an interesting impromptu talk!

Rotary Short Term Exchange
For many years, Rotary International has sponsored students
to spend a year in an overseas country to help them develop
 their leadership and inter-personal skills.
More recently, RI has introduced short term exchanges
lasting for 4 to 6 weeks.
At a recent Club meeting, president Ken introduced Jack MacKinnon
who is following on from his sister’s experience by going
on a short term exchange to Baroda in India,
 some 500km from Mumbai.
The Rotary Club of Baroda Cosmopolitan is sponsoring Jack
, just as our Club sponsored his sister Kate who undertook
a short term exchange to Italy earlier in the year
Jack leaves on December 10 for 6 weeks.
His Indian alternate will then spend 6 weeks
with the MacKinnon family in Australia, mid 2017.
The exchange has been arranged through Phil Cordery in Perth.
In case you hadn't guessed, Jack is mad keen on cricket
so his 6 weeks away may see him eventually forcing
his way into the Australian test team!

Create Courage
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

A partnership between Filipino telecom Globe
and Disney Southeast Asia has produced
one of the greatest tear-jerking-warm-your-heart ads
 that'll strike your feed today.
The ad features a shy girl who wears
a Stormtrooper helmet to school, as a shield for a disability.
We won't spoil it for you, but suffice it to say,
the rousing reveal is worth it.

The ad is part of Globe's #Create campaign
promote and protect the rights of Filipino girls
 and young women
and this time using the magic of a galaxy far, far away.
