Around the Clubs

Rotary Club of Victoria Park

At our last meeting we presented a check to Julian Silburn
which will enable a group of outcast Dilat children in Nepal
to be educated for till the end of their school year.

At our meeting on 14th Feb we heard from our two Rylarians,
Shivina and Shindoo, who related to us their experiences
about the Youth Leadership training they attended in January.
Speaking at a Rotary meeting for the first time can be difficult
for a young person but their task was made even more daunting
because some of the facilitators at the camp were also present.
The fact that they managed to perform this task admirably
is testimony of the value of Rotary youth projects
 such as RYLA.
It was fantastic to see so many new faces at our meeting
and the comaradarie  amongst them is evidenced
in the spirit they showed in posing for a selfie.

Rotary Club of Manjimup

Presentation by 2 Manjimup Senior High School  students
who attended the National Science Forum in January.
Kerry Mathers introduced Giverney and Ronan
and explained the process they went through to get to the program.
There is also a third student who was unable to attend tonight.
This is a very competitive program so a real honour for three students
out of approx 20 from WA to be chosen.
Giverney and Ronan attended the forum in Canberra
for a two week residential program.
They each described their experiences and came away
with increased self confidence, highly motivated to do well in their schooling this
year and a much greater appreciation of what roads are open
for them to travel in their career choices in front of them.
They also enjoyed the social events which allowed for networking
not only with other students but renowned experts
in each of the science fields they were exposed
to during the two week forum experience.

They both ended their talk by thanking Rotary
and other significant people for our support for this very
valuable experience and helping them to attend Canberra.

Past District Governor Jodie Sparks attended tonight
as Chair of the District Handi-camp.
She then presented President Alex with a Certificate of appreciation
and thanked him on behalf of the Club for our support this year.

Rotary Club of Perth

Great to have the Hon. Ken Wyatt MP as our guest today.
The minister's work to improve the lives and health,
 particularly in aged care,
of others at the federal level is a great testament
to the value of this great West Australian.

Rotary Club of Karrinyup

RC Karrinyup has once again supported the
Trigg Island Surf Lifesaving Club in the dedicated and amazing work
the surf club does in the local community down at Trigg Beach.
Our club has enjoyed a long-standing and close relationship
with the surf club stretching back some thirty nine-years.
Rotary recognises the fine work and service that surf lifesaving provides
 to the local community.
Our Club has supported the surf club in many different ways
over the years providing rescue vehicles and equipment,
 including an Oxy Viva unit.
In past years the surf club has also provided first aid service
for the Annual Rotary Community Fair
and provides training to those inbound exchange students
wishing to undertake a surf bronze.
Many of the surf club’s young members have been selected
to participate in Rotary youth exchange and leadership programs
at both high school and young adult level.
Recently the Rotary Club of Karrinyup
funded the purchase of a large beach shelter
for use by the Trigg Island SLSC.
The shelter will serve a wide variety of functions
such as First Aid tent when required,
 shade during competition outings
and general undercover storage area.

Gilmore College
Once again we welcomed Principal Rohan Smith of Gilmore College.
 Accompanying Rohan this week
was his colleague Shannon Butler,
who is the school psychologist at Gilmore College.
The year 2017will mark the 60th anniversary
of a public secondary school in Kwinana –
 longer than Rockingham and
many other areas in Perth.
The current ethos of Gilmore College is
 Rigour, Relevance and Relationships
