The synchronized
vaccination campaign,
one of the largest of its kind ever implemented in Africa,
is part of urgent measures to permanently stop polio on the continent.
All children under five years of age in the 13 countries
– Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad,
Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo,
Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria and Sierra Leone
– will be simultaneously immunized in a coordinated effort
to raise childhood immunity to polio across the continent
. In August 2016, four children were paralysed by the disease
in security-compromised areas in Borno state,
north-eastern Nigeria,
widely considered to be the only place on the continent
where the virus maintains its grip.

“Twenty years ago, Nelson Mandela
launched the pan-African
‘Kick Polio Out of Africa’ campaign,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti,
WHO Regional Director for Africa.
“At that time, every single country on the continent was endemic to polio
, and every year, more than 75 000 children were paralysed
for life by this terrible disease.
Thanks to the dedication of governments, communities,
parents and health workers,
this disease is now beaten back to this final reservoir.”

First RI President to Plant a Tree in Presidential Visit
Sydney Pascall, RI president in 1931
was the first president to
plant a tree during a presidential visit.
In 'The Rotarian' in July 1932,
Sydney Pascall wrote:
"Before I left London for my round the world club
visitations,
Paul Harris, revered founder of Rotary,
suggested that a most
appropriate way of symbolizing
the Rotary idea would be the planting of trees.
I started this observance in the National Botanical Gardens at Cape Town,
and since then I have planted more than 30
trees,
while 22 others have been set out by Mrs Pascall,
our daughter, and
mayors and Rotary leaders.
Let us hope that our active pursuit of friendship
among the nations may be symbolized by these trees.
We recall the saying;
'and
the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.'
May it be
so."

a chance to give the club an update on the

A decision was made late last year to assist this charity
with helping

. In all we managed to
assist ten families set up

This
meeting was a vocational visit to Alex & Sabina Orchard.
Alex gave a very
interesting introductory talk
and the group then went on an
orchard
walk.
The
walk was followed by a BBQ
and was a combined function between
the Rotary Clubs
of Manjimup and Bridgetown.
Following
the meal a presentation was made to Don Faulks
for all his hard work over the years he has served on the Timber Towns
Wine Show Committee. Don was on
the first committee
so has worked on the wine show from 2004 until 2017.
Don is
intending to step back from all
the jobs
he used to do with the wine show but will remain available
to help
with the decoration side of the event.
This
was a very enjoyable evening
and one of laughter and good fellowship.
The
function was well attended by both clubs as well as partners
and potential new members.

Along with the other Rotary Youth Exchange students,
Hannah helped
out last weekend at the Rotary District 9455 Conference.
She also attended a
Dockers game
and participated in a day trip and picnic
at Carnac Island.
Each year members of the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians
(IYFR)
Western Australian Fleet organize a picnic day
on their launches for
inbound RYE students.
The picturesque limestone island is only a short
boat ride from Fremantle
and is also popular destination for commercial boat
tours,
which bring visitors to view the local sea lions.
