ShelterBox has been busy over the holidays,
not least because of the terrible Typhoon that
ripped through the Philippines just before Christmas.
Fortunately, our team in the Philippines,
caught in the midst of the storm, emerged physically unscathed,
albeit with damaged homes.
Having aid stored locally meant that we were able to launch,
and immediate response and distributions are well underway.
The ongoing threat of COVID-19 had further complicated
and
already complex response.
In the good news column,
the final figures are in for our recent Giving Day are in
and I'm thrilled to announce a grand total of $162,314!
I'd like to say a huge than you to all that donated
to the matched giving fund and on the day.
Your generosity will change the lives of people suffering in places
like the Philippines, Yemen, Ethiopia, Haiti and Cameroon.
Typhoon Rai was the most severe storm to hit the country last year.
With gusts of up to 240 kmph,
the storm was equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane.
More than half a million people are still without anywhere to live,
and it’s still raining – making recovery
efforts event harder.
Damaged communication lines and fuel shortages
are making travel extremely challenging.
But despite these challenges, we’ve helped more than 5,000 people so far,
providing
shelter kits, tarpaulins, and other essential items.
We’re working closely with local partners;
the international response coordination teams;
the Philippines Navy; and Rotary contacts to make sure
we respond where the need is greatest.
We hope to be able to help over 8,000 more families.
It is feared that the damage may be much more significant
than is currently being reported in the media –
due to limited connectivity.
Our team members in the Philippines are all safe
and well but are sharing stories of widespread damage
and disruption.
Hi everyone and thank you once again for your incredible involvement
in the
ShelterBox Giving Day District Challenge.
In total we raised an incredible $162,314!!!!!!
Our District Challenge was so successful this year.
Undoubtedly the biggest success of the day was the support
we had from Rotary Clubs.
And we know that this was the direct result of you,
our District reps, and the work that you put in
sharing our District Challenge news.
We had an incredible 68% of totals funds come through
the District Challenge
donations alone!
We are delighted to announce that the winner of the 2021
ShelterBox Giving Day District Challenge is District 9620,
raising a total of $16,020.
Congratulations to the entire District, and you their champions,
who made this massive effort possible!
Please see our District Challenge page
that list all the Districts that
donated and our top winners.

For many patients across the Asia Pacific region a major barrier
to achieving full function after hand surgery is limited access
to rehabilitation upon discharge from hospital.
As we prepare to welcome in a new year, together,
we can restore hope and empower patients to continue
their vital rehabilitation from home.

They have renovated the old hall in an interesting eclectic way
and if those old walls could talk I
am sure they would approve.

The Rotary Club of Rockingham has purchased two Hi-Lo beds
for the Aged Care Rehabilitation Unit at Rockingham General Hospital.
Jo Hughes, the Nurse Unit Manager, stated that the purchase of these beds
will have a direct impact on improving patient outcomes as well as
reducing the incidence of injury in patients with dementia
who cannot be restrained and regularly attempt to climb out of their beds.
In an aging population this equipment will help in reducing patient injuries
and improve
the quality of life for the patients who use them.
Thanks to all the Rotarians and partners
who volunteered at the Cockburn Toy library
