The fight against Polio

The figures being received continue to look good

although vigilance is the key word.

From a global point of view, the data provided at June 15th

indicated that there have been 349 cases reported year to date

against a figure of 552 for the same period last year.

The interesting part of the data provided is that the success

we are having in the four endemic countries

is far more optimistic (58 versus 405 last year)

while the cases in non-endemic countries has grown (291 versus 147 last year).

A few comments by country are:
Afghanistan. No new cases reported in the last week

and only 10 cases YTD June 15th
India. No new cases reported in the last week and 21 cases YTD June 15th.

Last case reported 29th April.
Nigeria. No new cases reported in the last week

and only three cases YTD June 15th.
Pakistan. Two new cases reported in the past week

and 24 cases YTD June 15th.

This is an increase over the same period last year.

Consideration is being given to bringing NIDs forward.
Clubs in our region are strong supporters of the Polio Challenge

and are playing their part in Rotary achieving

its goal of reaching $200 million.

The numbers below indicate the strength of that support,

and the determination clubs in our region have towards this challenge.

Aussie inducted into the Arch Klumph Society
The Rotary Foundation recently celebrated the induction

of several new members into the Arch C. Klumph Society,

which honours people who give at least US$250,000 to the Foundation.

Brett Mitchell joined Rotary in 1993

and was a member of the Rotary Club of Brisbane High-Rise, Queensland, Australia.

He served as club secretary and board member.

He worked as a corporate regulator for the Australian Securities

and Investments Commission and was also a chartered accountant,

certified information systems auditor, and certified practicing risk manager.

He was a member of the finance committee for the Legacy Club of Brisbane

and of the management committee for the Queensland Community Foundation.
Through his bequest, Brett and life partner, Tuan,

supported the Permanent Fund and the Annual Programs

Who is Arch Klumph?

Arch C. Klumph,1916-17 president of RotaryInternational

and founder ofThe Rotary Foundation In 1917,

Arch C. Klumph, Rotary's sixth president,

proposed to the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, USA,

the creation of an "endowment fund for Rotary . .

. for the purpose of doing good in the world in charitable, educational,

and other avenues of community service."

A few months later, the endowment received its first contribution

of $26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri, USA.
In 1928, when the endowment fund had grown to more than US$5,000,

the fund was renamed The Rotary Foundation,

and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International.

Five Trustees, including Klumph, were appointed to "hold, invest, manage,

and administer all of its property. . . as a single trust,

for the furtherance of the purposes of RI."
Two years later, the Foundation made its first grant of US$500

to the International Society for Crippled Children.
That same year, the first Foundation program was established —

Fellowships for Advanced Study,

which was the forerunner of the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships program.

Then in 1965-66, three new programs were launched —

Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training,

and Grants for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary Foundation,

which was later called Matching Grants

RI DUES….Semi Annual Report
July 2010 SARs for the Rotary clubs in Australia and New Zealand

are being distributed from USA RI Quarters directly to them.
Philippines SARs were dispatched in the first week of July 2010

July 2010 RI semiannual dues include following items:
· Percapita dues @ US$25.00 per member
· Council on Legislation @ US$1.00 per member
· The Rotarian magazine @ US$12.00 each
· Pro-rata dues (if any new member admitted before 1 July 2010)
The RI's SAR invoice is calculated on actual membership

data a week prior to the issuing date.

Please adjust the numbers as necessary and recalculate the invoice amount.

To ensure proper recording to your account,

please return your Semi-Annual Report with membership changes promptly.

The worksheet must indicate club name, club number, officers' names,

the number of members and number of subscriptions for The Rotarian.
This information is needed for RI to adjust club's semiannual dues

and to meet the SAR submission requirement.
Australian clubs also need to pay extra 10% GST.

Clubs have to use the RI exchange rate when they pay

RI dues by local currency

has been serving the City of Perth for 25 years.

It is a non profit international and inter denominational

christian missionary organisation.

The government hasked YWAM to become involved at Christmas Island

with the great quantity of refugees entering Australia.

YWAM help the refugees through facillitating the transition

so as to take their minds of the stress of coming to Australia

and leaving their life [often family] behind.

Working with Aboriginal Communities
We were very fortunate to listen to Madeline Anderson

who spoke about her experience with RYLA

and how she is now able to help her extended aboriginal family achieve their goals.

Madeline gave a very moving presentation which

had us all listening intently and learning from her.
Madeline comes from a family where she has 4 brothers

and an extended family of about 50 people.

She was brought-up by her family elders

and with some mentoring by an Irish/Australian couple.

She also explained to us about the role of elders in families.
Madeline was sponsored to go to Boarding School at Perth College

in upper high school by the couple.

This was the first time she was away from her family

and she found this very challenging,

but it has now helped her to be more confident.

RYLA also provided her with the opportunity

to develop and use leadership skills.
Madeline has a strong connection to family

and is now helping her own extended family to set their goals,

communicate in a positive way and be respected by everyone.
It is now her own goal to start the process with other aboriginal families

and to have the support of the elders in each family group.

The elders have a very important role in aboriginal communities/families

and they want to improve the life of their families.
This was a very important meeting for myself

and I believe everybody who attended was also moved

by Madeline and her experience.

I am sure everyone wishes Madeline well in meeting

her new goals for aboriginal families.

Bigger, Better, and Bolder!
Rotary is the premier service
club organization in the world,
and all Rotarians should be
proud of our achievements.
Rotary is now on the world stage
due to PolioPlus, and our public
image is better than ever.

Yet,we should not be spoiled by
our success at the international level

because the real test of success for Rotary is
the strength and vitality of our clubs!
The Board adopted a revised RI Strategic Plan at its
November 2009 meeting that clearly recognizes the
importance of our clubs, and the first priority of the
new plan is to support and strengthen clubs. I agree
wholeheartedly, and I have appointed 41 new Rotary
coordinators to provide assistance to our clubs
and districts. Simply stated, their job is to help the
district governors to help the clubs.
Rotary lives and breathes in our 33,000 clubs,
and it is the clubs that improve lives by Building
Communities — Bridging Continents. If we succeed
in helping our clubs to become Bigger, Better, and
Bolder in the next year, then it is clear that the best
days of Rotary are still ahead. We are fortunate to
be Rotarians! Together, we can make the world a
better place!

Thought you might be interested in this.
Geraldine and I have just returned from a trip to Helsinki

to attend the wedding of one of our Club’s

former exchange students, Kati Viherma.
Kati, was with our Club in 1997-98.

Kati is one of a set of twins,

thankfully, not an identical twin because her new husband, Timo,

has an absolutely identical twin brother.
Both brothers studied for 6 years and qualified as Engineers

as their Father is an Engineer.

However, they both decided that engineering was not for them

and each have studied a further 6 years each to qualify in other professions.

Kati’s husband is now a Medical Doctor specialising in Orthopaedics

while Kati has gone onto qualify as a Lawyer.
Part of our trip over included a river cruise on a ship

with less than 70 couples on board.

Apart from ourselves, there was another couple from Australia

travelling to visit their grandson who was on Rotary Exchange in France.

There was another two couples from America travelling to visit

former exchange students in Germany and Amsterdam.

Four out of 70 seemed a fairly high percentage.
Add to that, two of our tour guides were former exchange students

who credited the program for their excellent English.

have combined to purchase a sea container

to transfer items to Timor Leste

The container is situated in the grounds of the Kent Street High School

Container loading in progress.

The first load was from Emma Campbell from Margaret River

from several school from Margaret River , Busselton and Bunbury with more to come.

Tally so far, over 400 chairs, 100 desks,50 tables

and several blackboards and whiteboards.

Childrens clothes and shoes have also been requested

and single metal frame single beds as many children

are sleeping on the concrete floors at some schools.

RIP RIC MARR
The funeral for Former Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie member,

and Paul Harris Fellow,

Ric Marr will be taking place at 11am on Monday

at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Kalgoorlie.

After relocating to Perth,

Ric became a member of the Rotary Club of Midland

where he continued to be an active Rotarian

putting Service Above Self.

where there were no paved roads, no electricity,

and no indoor plumbing,

scrimped and saved and finally was able to send his eldest son to college.

The lad did well, working hard for four years

and finally graduating with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
Arriving home after graduation, the boy was treated to a welcoming party,

complete with plenty of refreshments.

Shortly after he retired to sleep, the son was awakened by a call of nature.

Exiting the hut, he proceeded down the road to the outhouse,

only to stumble and fall because of the lack of lights.
The next day, the son decided to put his education to work.

He sat down, did the calculations,

and prepared construction drawings for a lighting system for the outhouse,

complete with lights for the path leading to it.

It was constructed and was an immediate success.

This chief’s son will go down in history

as the first Indian to wire a head for a reservation.
