A new approach to Rotary
Rotary International News -- 20 January 2011

Katie Ischkin, president and founder of the

Rotary Club of South Metro Minneapolis Evenings, Minnesota, USA,

believes in a new approach to Rotary.
Her Rotary club, chartered in June, has already grown to 25 members,

including 12 new Rotarians who were recruited in a three-month period.

The club has signed up for its first Matching Grant and international service project

and has participated in more than 10 community service or hands-on volunteer efforts.
Ischkin shared her ideas on how to attract young professionals

to Rotary during the International Assembly,

an annual training event in San Diego, California.

As a "proud, young, female Rotarian,"

she is among only 2 percent of club members worldwide under the age of 30,

and only 11 percent under 40.
"We need to focus on generating interest in young people

for the future success of Rotary," she said.

"We are faced today with the need to grow not just for the sake of numbers

but to create strong, young, global leaders

who are going to help continue the success of the Rotary organization."
Ischkin advocates a new outlook on membership

and a different approach to club structure.

As a change management consultant, she said she understands people's fear of change.

But she stressed that her approach doesn't mean altering the core pieces

of the organization or losing what Rotarians hold dear.
"What does change are what I call surface-level elements," she said.

"The pieces that individual clubs have the power to shift and redesign,

such as meeting times

Queensland D9570 Flood Update – 9th January 2011

The response to our call for volunteers and helpers

to repair fencing destroyed by the Central Queensland floods has been wonderful.

Many people have been assigned to many different locations

and are being cared for by the appreciative land owners.
However we can still use more help.

Some property owners are able to pay for work on repairing fencing

and general property rehabilitation.
Some property owners including young irrigation farmers

who are not well established, have lost everything

and forward sold crops they will now have to purchase, in order to fill the contract.

This could prove to be an impossible task.
These farmers will be unable to pay for rehabilitation work

and and therefore need volunteers to help with a few days on their properties.

Work could include, fencing, collecting irrigation equipment

washed down-stream, restoring sheds, tracks, head ditches and drains etc.

Inbaraj's Work Recognised with Humanities Award...
When some of our Club members visited India in February 2009

we visited the home of Inbaraj and Indra

and the then 12 orphaned children that they had adopted.

They now have 15 adopted children.
Inbaraj's work with these children has recently been recognised

by the Indian government who have given him the

Jawaharlal Nehru Award 2010 which is also known as

The Man of Humanitarianism Award

and is given each year to the best child workers in Indian on National Children's Day

Short Term Exchange Program
Introduction
Rotary Short Term Exchange presents opportunities for students

to advance their knowledge and world understanding

by allowing them to exchange with another country

Who is eligible?
Any student aged 15-18 of good character that possesses a warm personality

and a desire to live abroad and host in return.
Candidates should be adaptable and flexible,

well mannered and want to experience life in other countries and cultures.
Children of Rotarians and non Rotarians are equally eligible

Is proficiency in a foreign language needed?
No! The program is cultural in nature but it is also for a short period of time
At present we are only exchanging with English speaking countries

due to the shortness of the exchange

How much does it cost?
There are two main elements that comprise the cost of the program
First there is the cost of the round trip airfare from Australia to your host country
Secondly is the cost of spending money while abroad.

Because students live with a host family, room and board is provided.
It is also recommended that they take small gifts for the host families
Students are covered by Rotary insurance

however it is advised to also take out travel insurance

· Students ,both inbound and outbound must attend school where possible
· All students must be sponsored by a Rotary Club
· All students must undergo District interviews

and briefings before departure
· The whole program is flexible and can be arranged

to suit individual needs of a student
· All students must obey the guide lines set by Rotary International
· Exchanges can be anywhere between 4 weeks[minimum] and 8 week[ maximum]

A kind-hearted motorist saw a man struggling

to change a tire alongside the highway,

and pulled over to see whether he could help.

The man had a very red face, and a dark smear across

it where he'd wiped off sweat with dirty hands.

His tie was undone and his shirt collar askew,

and it was clear he had also wiped his hands on his once-white shirt.

Close to him stood an immaculately neat woman

who was speaking in quick, agitated tones.

"Hello, there," said the motorist.

"Say, I've changed a lot of tires. . . maybe I can help here."

"You sure can," the man with the flat tire replied wearily.

"My wife is an expert, too.

If you will just do all the arguing with her about

how this tire ought to be changed,

I can concentrate on the dirty work and get the job done."
