September is "New Generations Month"

September 2010
Youth programs help enhance Rotary’s public image

Rotary has many youth programs.
The programs for younger participants, such as Interact and Rotary Youth Exchange,
are not funded by The Rotary Foundation,
but they all give Rotary a very positive public image,
which The Rotary Foundation benefits from.
They are also very important to The Rotary Foundation,
as the participants get their first contact with Rotary,
which can lead to future membership in a Rotary club and,
hopefully, becoming a contributor to The Rotary Foundation.
The programs for older participants,
such as Ambassadorial Scholarships, Group Study Exchange,
and Rotary Peace Fellowships, are funded by The Rotary Foundation
. Of special interest to me is the Rotary Centers for International Studies
in peace and conflict resolution –
a program that one day might become the jewel in the Rotary programs crown.
We have a fundraising effort running for this program –
the USD95 million campaign –
which must not be forgotten in our ambition
to increase contributions to the Annual Programs Fund and Permanent Fund
and to meet Rotary’s USD200 Million Challenge.
All our youth programs are peace programs.
In particular, our Youth Exchange participants act as ambassadors of peace
when going to a totally new environment.
We ask a lot from them, and we can be very proud of them.
All our students – younger or somewhat older, at home or abroad –
participate in local projects,
thus Building Communities – Bridging Continents
through Service Above Self.

Fellow Rotarians,
The Attadale Club has elected to support
the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society of Western Australia (MSWA)
as its major project this year through the sponsorship
of a 12 hour “Swim for MS” event which will be held at
the Melville Aquatic Centre in Booragoon on Sunday 19th September from 8am to 8pm.
The event details can be viewed on the
website http://www.swimforms.org.au/index.php
Those who don’t know much about MS can find out from the above website
about this terrible disease and its effects on young people particularly.
The Rotary Club of Attadale is seeking your club’s support for MS sufferers
throughout Western Australia through our project in one of three ways.
Firstly and most importantly, you can identify someone in your club
or associated with a member (s) of your club who would be willing
and able to register a team for the event.
They would then find up to 12 other people who would
form a team under that person’s captaincy.
All would register on line and then add photos,
messages etc to encourage other people to support them in the event.
There is a registration fee of $30 per registrant which goes to MS but in return,
each swimmer receives food and drinks after their swim
and a participant’s pack which includes an event ‘t’ shirt, a swimming cap
and a number of other benefit items.
The communication possibilities are numerous and are explained on the website.
Your club and its members can support the team by donating on line.
All donations over $2 are tax deductible and the donor
will be automatically issued with an emailed receipt by MSWA.
It is a particularly easy and user-friendly system.
You can even provide your team member with a message of support
and your donation will be displayed if you are happy to be acknowledged publicly.
All contributions, no matter how small or large, will assist greatly.
Some donation options are shown on the website
but there are facilities to donate any amount.
Secondly, if you cannot form a team you can help by going on line
and donating to a person or a team which is registered.
The Rotary Club of Attadale’s “Yvonne’s Angels” would love to have your support
Both your club and individual members can donate in this way.
Finally, you can share details of this event (via the link above)
with people in your personal communities
(sporting clubs, churches, social groups, work environments, family and friends).
The RCA looks forward to your support.

Regards

Last week's meeting had a strong focus on the Ambassadorial Scholarships
funded by the Rotary Foundation.
The outbound scholar for our district, Lisa Guppy,
will shortly be heading to University College London
to spend a year of her PhD studying hospital disaster relief measures
that can be applied to addressing the issue of water poverty.
She explained that there is a lot more involved than simply digging wells or laying pipes,
as many well-meaning NGOs go in and do –
the water must also be tested and c o l l e c t i o n methods
considered to avoid contamination with poisons such as arsenic.
Word has come in that her visa has finally be approved, so shewill be heading off to District
1140 this week.
We also met our applicant for the next round of scholarships,
Justin Hewett.
Justin is a law student
and he hopes to spend a year studying a Masters in Beijing
We wish him all the best for his interview on September 11th.
We also received news from an inbound Ambassadorial Scholar,
Melpo Economou, who is still here in Perth.
She brought us the Burundi Peace Choir project when shewas working at ASETTS.
She is now working at Curtin Volunteers.

Re: Books to Papua and New Guinea
Clubs in our former district 9460 sent six shipping containers
full of books to Africa in recent years –
a fantastic international project.
Rotarians in Manjimup are now supporting a similar project
to a village in Papua and New Guinea
and will appreciate whatever help you can give.
Our project is in partnership with local Adventists
and will run for three months.
The container has been acquired
and is located in Perth and we are asking interested Rotarians
to assist in three ways:
To provide surplus books that are in good condition.
Books should suit children and suit adult reading
(semi literate but keen to learn);
technical books have very limited application;
To sound out local primary school principals about surplus books;
To provide a Club contact to coordinate member’s efforts;
Delivery of books to the “sorting and packing” venue
will be appreciated but arrangements to pick-up can also be made.
Contacts and addresses will be supplied by me to your Club coordinator
if your Club is willing to help.
My contact details for reply and ongoing liaison are:
Alan Lush
bernal8@bigpond.com (preferred)
h 9771 1733
A shipping container will take 1000 cartons of books
(equiv. to wine carton in size); a lot of books.
The certified container has been purchased outright
and will also be donated to the village for other storage purposes.
Freight costs are substantial and local members
and busily making and selling apple juice to fund the project.
Our challenge is to meet the project’s “sunset clause” of three months
to ensure it does not drag on.
Thank you for considering this project.

Smile!!
Go on try... Smile ...[you can do it]

A Professor walked into a bar and said,
“Bring me a martinus.”
The bartender smiled and said,
“You mean martini?”
“If I want more than one”, snapped the Professor,
“I’ll order them.”
