November is Rotary Foundation Month

Group Study Exchange
GSE is one of The Rotary Foundation’s many educational programs,
offering a unique person-to person
opportunity to promote better understanding and friendly relations
among peoples of the world.
While designed to promote goodwill, understanding and peace,
it also allows the exchange of ideas
and development of personal acquaintances and lasting friendships.
GSE exchanges are between paired Rotary districts in different countries,
enabling them to study the host country
as well as members’ own vocations.
This is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity
for business people and professionals
between 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers.
Team members who participate in this once-in-a-lifetime experience
will return home with a broadened cultural perspective
and new understanding of a nation’s history,
language, commerce, and government.
GSE offers a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills,
work on team building and increase self-confidence.
The program is designed to have an invaluable impact on the career
of a young professional in the increasingly global workplace
by creating networking opportunities and lifelong friendships.
In their tour, applicants participate in vocational visits,
club presentations, formal visits and social events,
a Rotary district conference, cultural and site tours
as well as free time with host families.

Group Study Exchange
Since 1965 about 67,000
individuals (14,106 teams)
from 202 countries
and geographical areas
have participated at a cost of more
than US$105 million.

FRANK CROSS OBE
A TRIBUTE FROM THE DALKEITH-NEDLANDS PROBUS CLUB
It all started months ago when Probian Clive Annear embarked on a special project:
to uncover the diversity of experience
and some of the personal history of members of the Dalkeith-Nedlands Probus Club.
Frank Cross, our oldest member was the first to be approached.
Clive soon discovered that this active elderly Probian would turn 100 on November 13th.
He also uncovered details of Frank's remarkable career.
Frank left school as a 15 year old and started work in 1927
as a cadet with the WA Employers Federation
and rose to lead the organisation for 24 years up to his retirement in 1976.
Further enquiries revealed many details of Frank's key post-war role
in Western Australian industry, working in conjunction with governments
led by Sir David Brand and Sir Charles Court,
as well as with employers and trade unions.
Organisations large and small, including the Chamber of Commerce
and Industry, the Institute of Municipal Management,
the Industrial Relations Society, the Citizens Advice Bureau,
the WA Council of Social Services, Perth Rotary, Beehive Industries,
the Ravenswood Society and no less than three Probus Clubs,
all benefited enormously over the years from Frank's energy and initiatives.
Addressing members and guests packed into
the Dalkeith Bowling Club on November 8th,
Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, James Pearson,
was eloquent in his praise of Frank's role in helping to lay
the foundations for WA's current prosperity,
ably supported by Richard Court, by Patrick Cullen, CEO of the Institute of Management,
and by Peter Burns, Rotary District 9455 Probus Chairman.
Speaking on behalf of the family,
son Doug referred to a strong understanding of the commitment
that was so evident in their upbringing
and in which mediocrity was not an option.
The celebration concluded with the unveiling of a fine portrait of Frank
painted by well known artist, John Garde,
and sponsored jointly by the CCI and the artist himself
After the unveiling, Probus President, Ken Arbery
took pleasure in presenting the portrait to Frank as a memorial.
Leaving the hall, one of the key-note speakers was overheard saying,
"This is arguably the best thing I have done since I was appointed".
What a spontanteous tribute to Frank's long and wonderfully creative career,
and to those whose efforts made the day a great success.
Irwin Barrett-Lennard

As RDPC for District 9455 I was asked to attend.
I did so and on behalf of Probus Centre -South Pacific
presented to Frank a certificate of service and a Probus tie.
A total of 130 people attended the function and Richard Court,
the former Premier of Western Australia, was the keynote speaker.
I have attached several pages of information covering the function
and also Frank's working background.
Frank was a member of the Perth Rotary club for 34 years
and is a life member of the Probus Club of Mandurah
and also a member of the Probus club of Dalkeith-Nedlands

Service Above Self — He Profits Most Who Serves Best

DISTRICT 9455
Peter Burns,
30 Juniper Bank Way
SUBIACO 6008
18th November 2011
Dear Club President
What Community Service Project started by Rotary in Australia in 1976
has four times as many members as Rotary?
What organisation in Australia forms thirty new clubs a year?
What organisation in Australia has 1781 clubs?
What organisation has 112 clubs in Western Australia,
with seven of these clubs having a waiting list?
Why of course the answer is PROBUS.
Probus is a dynamic organisation catering for retired and semi retired people.
It is run on similar lines to Rotary,
but without the service or attendance requirements.
Probus is growing and there is a lot more room for further growth
but it needs your help as a Rotary Club to make it happen.
The set up cost is $700, and a working committee takes, say, two months work.
As Probus is a special and ongoing project of Rotary,
may I suggest that your club reestablish communications
with your local Probus Club/s in your area,
then look at whether the area needs a new combined Probus Club.
If you need further information,
I would be happy to assist.
Yours in Rotary,
PETER BURNS

Hello Fellow Rotarians,
This is John Cahill from the Rotary Club of Como.
You may have heard that our club has just started a new Car Park Market
which operates along the same lines as the very successful swap meet
markets run by the Melville and Booragon clubs.
I am emailing you to ask if you could circulate the attached flyer
to your members and ask them to also circulate it on to their contacts as well.
One of the key things when getting a market of this nature going
is to have enough Sellers to attract a good deal of interest from Buyers
and thus encourage other sellers to come along as well.
To get that initial critical mass of sellers it would be appreciated
if your club members could come along and set up a stall
in the next couple of weeks (or the your club as a fund raiser selling garage sale type items).
If members don not have things to sell maybe they could come along,
have a Iook and lend encouragement to our club members who will be there on site.
Thank you in advance for any support you can give,
Regards,
John Cahill

"Quote of the Week"

Picture of the construction of the Narrows Bridge in the late 1950's

SMILE!!!!!!!

An Irishman, living in Devon,
goes for a job on a construction site.
The foreman asks, "Can you brew tea?"
The Irishman says, "Yes."
"Good. Can you drive a fork lift?"
The Irishman looks at him and asks,
"An' just how big is the teapot?"

Once there were these two birds who,
every year for quite a few years, had one egg,
which they hatched and nurtured and loved
until the little chick was ready to leave the nest.
Then, one year, they had two eggs!
Well, they were just so excited they could hardly stand it;
this year they would each have an egg to take care of and love.
They kept close watch on those two eggs so that no harm came to them.
Then one day when the eggs were ready to hatch,
an earthquake shook the tree where the nest was;
the two birds flew away to safety,
all the while worrying about those two eggs that were about to hatch.
When the tremor was finished, they hurried back to the nest.
As they neared it, they heard one strong "Cheep" coming from the nest.
They were worried that something might have happened to the other egg,
but when they got to the nest,
they found that there were TWO chicks cheeping in unison.
This just goes to show that two can cheep as lively as one.
