Early literacy counts
BY SALLY LEE
01 Mar, 2011
THE gift of life is very precious and to celebrate this,

the Rotary Club of Cabramatta had a special present
for the newborn babies at Fairfield hospital.
Babies who were born last Wednesday,

sharing the same birth date as the Rotary Club,
were given a children's book
Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes by Mem Fox
by the Rotary Club last Thursday.
Community service director Geoff Lumley

said the book was chosen because it was "very relevant" to mothers and babies today.
"The book deals with children from different cultures and nationalities," he said.
"It has that multicultural aspect."
The new program encourages literacy as the Rotary Club

believes it is an important part of every child's future.
Ms Fox, an Australian author, said she was "thrilled" to endorse the program.
"Reading and sharing the magical world of books brings great joy,

laughter and peace to everyone," she said.

Lowest-ever polio cases recorded in 2010
Press Trust Of IndiaKolkata, March 01, 2011

India has moved closer to eradication of polio,
recording only 42 cases in 2010 compared to 741 in the previous year.
Till February this year, only a single case has been reported
from Howrah district in West Bengal,
according to the India National Polioplus Committee of Rotary International.
A special polio immunisation campaign was launched recently
in Howrah, Kolkata, Murshidabad and adjoining areas
by administering oral polio vaccine to the children there.
Sources said that more immunisation campaigns were lined up
in these polio high-risk areas as part of rapid response
and an aggressive strategy to arrest polio incidence in the state.
"Multiple polio vaccination rounds are needed to rapidly boost immunity
of children against polio, interrupt polio virus transmission in West Bengal," they said.
Committee chairman Deepak Kapur said that Rotary International
along with partners, including the West Bengal government,
is employing best resources and manpower available to eradicate polio from the state.
Quoting UNICEF (India)'s chief of polio eradication programme Lieven Desomer,
the sources said the UNICEF had expanded partnership
with NGO networks in the state to bolster community participation
for polio eradication efforts.
"Protecting children against polio and eradicating
the crippling disease is a top priority," he said.
Nearly 1,62,500 vaccinators are expected to immunise 93 lakh children
of up to age five during the week-long polio campaign

NZ earthquake

Hand- made gifts, sent from the Assistant Governor Debra Bell
on behalf of the Rotorua Sunrise Rotary Club,
brightened up the lives of several Christchurch Hospital
patients seriously injured in the February 22 earthquake.
Christchurch Hospital customer services manager Joy Sixtus
says 10 beautiful quilts and some bunnies - "made with love" since the quake -
were given to patients yesterday;
recipients included two young Japanese women who were all smiles
despite both suffering from a number of different injuries.
The Rotary Club's wishes were for the foreign nationals
caught up in the quake to receive the gifts but many of those victims
have already returned to their own country.
"One quilt in particular was made especially for a young Japanese man
who lost a limb and although he has been discharged,
I will endeavour to have the Japanese Embassy team get this to him," Mrs Sixtus says.
Although most of the children hurt in the quake are no longer in hospital,
or have been transferred to Starship Hospital,
other sick children in the paediatric ward will still take great comfort from these bunnies.
Mrs Sixtus says the gifts were a lovely gesture
and the Rotary Club needs to be acknowledged.
The other gifts have been distributed to:
Two young women in ICU who lost limbs
A Canadian couple who were both seriously injured
Two Japanese girls
A women seriously injured who lost her daughter in the quake
Another seriously injured women with spinal injuries
A baby quilt for a young mother with a spinal injury

World Rotaract Week
7-13 March 2011
Every year, World Rotaract Week honors the chartering of the first club in 1968.
World Rotaract Week is a time for Rotaractors and Rotarians
around the world to come together to celebrate the success
and importance of the Rotaract program.
This event is also an excellent opportunity to inform members
of your community about the amazing work that Rotaract clubs do,
and give them an opportunity to get involved.
Rotaract clubs and their sponsor Rotary clubs
have the freedom to explore a variety of methods
of participating in World Rotaract Week.
Rotaractors can decide the best way for their club
to celebrate the Rotaract program – completing one,
two or an entire week’s worth of activities.
After the club has completed its World Rotaract Week commemorative events,
the sponsor Rotary club or district Rotaract chair
can download a certificate of recognition
for presentation to the Rotaract club.

Storm the Stage is a Youth inspired project,
established by and inaugurated by the Rotary Club of Cannington in 2003.
The project has provided an avenue for young people (aged 16 to 19 years)
to showcase their talent in front of a large audience,
after performing in heats, finals and be on stage in a National Grand Final.
Each person who enters can perform a Monologue Drama piece
and or a song from a recognized musical.
Many hundreds have enjoyed this opportunity since the first event in 2004
to the 7th in 2010.
Claire Lovering; a National Grand Final winner in the Drama section,
went on to study at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA)
and is now performing with our premier WA theatre company;
The Black Swan Theatre.
There has been many other successful outcomes for winners and Finalists.
Patrons and supporters of Storm the Stage
are Hugh Jackman and Jill Perryman.
The National Committee for Storm the Stage resides in Perth
and relies on contacts with Rotary Club representatives in each of the other States.
The committee is primarily made up of Rotarians from
the Rotary Clubs of Cannington and Melville.
Members from other Clubs and from the performing arts community,
are encouraged to be part of this exciting project.
Learn more by inviting a member of the committee
to come to your Club as a guest speaker.

The Carine Community Fair will be held again on Sunday 20 March 2011,
and we are now calling for expressions of interest
from stallholders who wish to participate.
Now in 3rd decade, the Fair has grown to become one
of the major annual events in the northern suburbs.
It is designed to give community groups with limited resources
an opportunity to raise their own funds which otherwise
may not have been possible.
Organisations which have benefited in the past by using the Fair
as a means of supplementing their own fund raising efforts include
scouting groups,
Silver Chain,
Motor Neurone Disease Association,
Red Cross,
school P&C’s,
junior sporting clubs and the like.
In addition, the event provides participants with an opportunity to engage
with a large number of visitors from the surrounding area
who are drawn to the Fair to see a variety of fun
and interesting attractions in a safe and friendly atmosphere.

Stall holders wishing to participate can obtain an application form
with the terms and conditions attached, by e-mail at

"Quote of the Week"

A physician presented his bill to the attorney representing a deceased person's estate.
Each ofthem knew the other, having tangled quite a few times in court,
where the doctor was often calledas an "expert witness."
The doctor asked the lawyer if he wanted the bill sworn to
."No," replied the lawyer,
"the death of Mr.Abernathy is sufficient evidence that you attended him professionally."
"Be that as it may," countered the doctor,
"thefact that you handled his affairs is probably
why he couldn't afford to pay this bill in the firstplace."

A golfer who was known for his bad temper
walked into the pro shop one day and plunked
down big bucks for a new set of woods.
The staff all watched to see what would happen
after he used them for the first time --
more than half expecting he'd come in and demand his money back.
But the next time he came in, he was all smiles.
"They're the best clubs I've ever had," he said.
"In fact, I've discovered I can throw them at least forty yards
farther than I could my last ones."
