Olympic athletes help Rotary promote polio eradication
By Arnold R. Grahl
Rotary News – 1 August 2012

The best athletes in the world have gathered in London for the 2012 Summer Olympics, and some of them are helping to spread the word about Rotary’s campaign to rid the world of polio.
Rotarians in Plymouth, Devon, England, used a few connections to line up Olympic divers Tom Daley and Tonia Couch for “This Close” posters, which have been displayed around Plymouth and at the training facility used by Ghana’s Olympic team.
Darren Hands, a member of the Rotary Club of Plympton, was put in contact with the athletes’ coach by a photographer friend who takes pictures of the divers regularly. The coach was happy to approach Daley and Couch and help make arrangements, Hands says.
“We did the shoot quite early in the morning so as not to impede their training,” he says. “We then produced various-size posters and postcards, as well as got the images printed in the local press and onto club and district websites.”
Other Olympic athletes participating in the “This Close” campaign are more than a dozen members of India’s team, including members of the men’s boxing, men’s and women’s weightlifting, and men’s and women’s wrestling teams.
Appealing to parents, wrestler Sushil Kum, a bronze medalist at the 2008 Beijing games, said: “In 1988, 500 children were getting affected by polio in India every day. Today, our country is reaching steadily toward eradication of polio. We need your help to win this fight.”
And Vijender Singh, a member of the boxing team who won a bronze medal in Beijing, said: “Polio vaccine can save a child from polio paralysis. Let us ensure that children are not paralyzed by giving them the vital drops

This it to confirm that Abilio SOARES CARLOS arrived safely at Perth Airport in the company of his Aunt, Imanuela de JESUS SOARES on Saturday afternoon, 28th of July.

They were met by Mudji Nielsen and Peter Snell and taken to Ronald McDonald House, in Hope Street, near to Princess Margaret Hospital, where they will stay - apart from the time Abilio will be a cardiac patient at PMH.

This confirms that Abilio had surgery today for thoracic pulmonary stenosis.  He was operated on at 9.15am and went back to Ward 5a, Room 6 at around  midday.
The cardiologist was Dr, Steve Shipton, along with Dr. Andrew Bullock with Dr Ian Fleming as anesthetist. Both Dr. Shipton and Dr. Bullock said they were pleased with the outcome.

(Prior to this Abilio and his Aunt Imanuela were collected by car from Ronald McDonald House at 6.45am and driven to the nearby cardiology wing at Princess Margaret Hospital.)

Abilio and his Aunt will both stay in Ward 5a tonight (Wednesday 1st.) and I will go back to PMH at 7am tomorrow morning. It is my understanding that after 'doctors rounds' tomorrow, Abilio will be able to return to Ronald McDonald House where he will stay until given an "all clear" to return home to East Timor with his Aunt.

Dr. Bullock is trying to arrange for Abilio to have some necessary dental work before he returns home.
Both Abilio and Imanuela seem very comfortable with the surgery and accomodation arrangements

Dear Western Region Committee Members and Friends,

Well, today was a really good day...when I arrived at PMH (at 6.30am!) I found a very big change in Abilio. His colour was so much better and his breathing much easier.
Dr. Shipton visited Abilio at 8am and an echocardiogram was taken around 9.30am. Abilio was placed on liquid anti-biotics as he had a fall prior to coming to WA and his right hand had become infected.
Due to Abilio's teeth being decayed, we visited the dentist who has recommended treatment and we need a quote as he will require surgery under an anasthetic - ??? day surgery -  before he goes home, as it needs to be done for his overall good health.

Peter Snell, a Rotarian from Bentley Club visited pm and brought colouring-in books and pencils. He also offered to help get the right phone card/system installed on Aunt Imanuela' phone - these were purchased from the Post Office snd Vodaphone (no, I am not techno savvy!!!) Hopefully it is now sorted as it was important to let Abilio's family know the good news.

I will visit Ronald McDonald House with fried rice and chicken a bit later tomorrow morning and give you a further update in the evening.
There is something very satisfying in knowing our  ROMAC has the capacity and support needed to help children like Abilio - who is 5 and only weighs 16kg - have essential surgery.(he ia a really cute boy and  you can't help but love him!)

Kind regards,
Joan Varian

ON A LIGHER SIDE

The cruise ship docked at a Mexican port during a very high tide. Everyone on board was forced to use the ship's narrow gangplank as a passageway to the dock far below.
The staff stood motionless when a passenger in her seventies appeared at the top of the plank. There wasn't room for anyone to assist her, so she edged along slowly and finally made it to the dock safely, to everyone's relief.
As she stepped down, she turned, looked back at the top of the plank and shouted, "It's okay, Mother. You can come down now."
