The Lucky Winner of Pam's Painting is.....
To all those
Rotarians who attended the Club meetings
for the District Governor’s Official
visit,
Pam and I thank you not only for your hospitality,
but also for the
wonderful and overwhelming support
you gave the raffle she conducted in support
of her nominated project,
Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC)
The draw was held at
the Rotary Club of Rossmoyne’s meeting
on Wednesday 8th October,
in conjunction
with the drawing of their Community Raffle.
PDG Jodie Sparks drew
out the winning ticket
and Pam’s painting has gone to David Meyer
of the Rotary
Club of Katanning.
We thank you so much
for embracing the joint Meetings
for the DG’s visit and the incredible support
given to ROMAC.

Eric introduced our Rotary
Festival Queen for the 2015 Festival – Danica Baesjou.
Danica
attended the meeting with her mother Naomi.
Greg Simpson
thanked Neil for his talk
which helped Rotarians understand the wide gamut of
mental illnesses.
Our guest speaker –
Neil, spoke
on mental health.
Neil has been in Busselton for 3
years involved in mental health
through WACCS which is situated in West St.
Prior to that he was involved in the Child and Adolescent Health programs
through the Princess Margaret Hospital
as well as in the Kimberley’s.
Neil stressed that mental health
was not one issue
but a term used to cover a wide range of mental illnesses.
A large number of statistics and
definitions
were quoted but Neil stressed that the reality is
that 1:5
Australians will suffer form a mental health problem
some time in their lives.
Neil closed the talk by
underlining that it is important
that no-one be afraid of asking their
mate/friend/colleague:
‘Are you
OK?’

As a result
of a Group Study Exchange with Eastern Russia in 2012,
nine clubs from D 9465,
Booragoon,
Collie, Esperance Bay, Kojonup,
Mandurah City, Melville, Rockingham. Rossmoyne
& Southern Districts
contributed to a Matching Grant to build a Rotary Park
costing $58,000 US in Novosibirsk.
It is the third largest city in Russia
and
is the capitol of Siberia with a population of 1.5 million.
Within this city
there are about 114 thousand disabled people
of which 3.5 thousand are
children.
People with disabilities are hidden from society in Russia.
These
children spend most of their time either at home
or in specialized boarding
facilities.
They are rarely participating in the regular life.
Coordinated
by the Rotary Club of Novosibirsk,
the playground was opened on 4th
Sept 2014
with much media attention.
Rotary in Russia is fairly new and in 2013
became an independent District from North America.
Also it is viewed somewhat
suspiciously
so the profile of Rotary has certainly been lifted
and will
continue for many years to come with all the uses of the park.
Recent
comments from Team Leader Mikhail Kunitsyn
“ For us was a big surprise that our
park has proved so popular.
Every warm day, dozens of children were playing
there!
Now it’s getting colder and raining, so we can see a few people,
but
still every moment we see mothers with children.
I never seen the children in
wheelchairs,
but, you know, here we need to change the psychology,
they need to
stop being afraid, and it's quite a long process.
Great discovery for me was
the fact that the Wall of Fame
is worth and no one (!) plate ripped!
This is
very surprising, at our Russian level of vandalism,
we expected that plates
will be broken /ripped in a few days.
No. People come up, read, respectfully
depart.
Very good project!”
Just shows
how meeting people from different parts of the world
and working together on a
worthwhile project
is possible and can bring joy and a better life for so many
children.
Thanks
