An update on fighting Ebola in Liberia

ANZAC  2015

Perth exchange student Charlotte Brooks
will explore her family's link to one of the most poignant moments
in Australian history when she goes to Gallipoli
for next year's 100th anniversary of the Anzac landing.

The 17-year-old Penrhos student's great-great-uncle
John Harold Theodore Wilson also fought with the Anzacs
as part of the 5th Light Horse Brigade
and was stationed in Cairo, defending the Suez Canal.
"It is very hard for me to imagine what it must have been like
for a man not much older than myself to be fighting,"
Charlotte said yesterday.
"Visiting Anzac Cove will be a very emotional experience
for me and will make me feel much
more connected to my great-great-uncle.
"It will give me a better understanding
of his experiences during World War I.

"I am also looking forward to immersing myself in Turkish culture
and learning about the country's history."

Charlotte's trip will be sponsored by Albany City Rotary Club,

which is also hosting Turkish teenager Feyyaz Aydin, 17.
His stay in Albany, part of Australia's Rotary exchange program
which has operated for 50 years,
was timed to coincide with last month's Anzac centenary
in the Great Southern city and he has been helping
Charlotte prepare for her visit to his country.
Feyyaz has met Prime Minister Tony Abbott,
Premier Colin Barnett and Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove
and said his Australian journey had been made more special
because of his own family's wartime background.
His grandmother told him her father and uncle fought at Gallipoli,
his great-grandfather was a doctor in the war
and lived until he was 107 and his great-great- uncle
was an army officer at Gallipoli who died in the war.
"Coming to Australia in the 100th year after the war
is a big opportunity for me, especially being in Albany,
the place where the ships left Australia for Turkey.
"In Turkey, in my school history class
and older people in my family would often
tell me the war story from the Turkish side.
"Now I'm in Australia I am learning and
understanding other parts of the story.
Feyyaz said walking to the Ataturk Memorial in Albany
 with Turkey's Canberra-based army attache
was very emotional for both of them.
Rotary District 9465 youth exchange chairman Ross Grafton
said six Australian districts were hosting Turkish students
to recognise the significant history and friendship
between the countries because of the Anzacs.

Rotary Club of Albany Port

Wednesday 3 December was a special day for Albany Port Rotary.
we were joined by Albany City and Mt Barker Rotary Clubs
and had the honour of presenting a Paul Harris Fellowship.
Lawrence Edmund FRASER is well known in the Albany community
and crucial roles he played in the enormously successful
Commemoration of the Departure of the Fleet for the recent ANZAC events.
Laurie was a key player in much of the logistical organisation.
Laurie was one of three committee members
that made the approaches to the Federal Government
for Albany to be recognised and play a leading role
 in the ANZAC Commemorations.

KAT WINS THE ROTARY SERVICE ABOVE SELF AWARD.

Katharine Guo (pictured with Perth Modern School
Associate Principal, Steve Jurilj)
was astonished when her name was called to receive
the Rotary Club of Subiaco’s Service Above Self Award
at the recent Perth Modern School Presentation Ceremony.

Over the past twelve months,
this service minded school leaver dedicated (conservatively)
over six hundred hours towards community service.
Kat supported and organized fundraising for a plethora of causes,
including Radio Lollipop, Red Nose day, Daffodil Day,
Red Cross and the Ethan Davies Scholarship fund.
Kat organized a fundraising week at school to support
 the Ethan Davies Scholarship -
involving different activities for each day of the week.
These same organization skills were in evidence in her support
for the Freeway Bike Hike and the City to Surf event.
Kat maintained her commitment to fundraising for the wider community,
while undertaking a demanding academic program
and extensive school music involvement as a clarinetist
in the school orchestra and performing in the school chorale.
“Community service is a part of our school ethos,” said Kat.
“And so many students do so much – we do it together!
I was so surprised to receive this award.”
Members of the Rotary Club of Subiaco are committed
to maintaining this annual award and having talked with Katharine,
 totally understand her success.
The future is in good hands!

our Club awarded Associate Membership to Big Issue seller,
Sean Cheyne for his enthusiastic support of the Rotary Club of Karrinyup
over the past two years.
The presentation by President Carolyn
was attended by a number of our Rotarians
and a representative of the Big Issue magazine.
Sean has arrived early every Sunday morning
for the past two years and assisted us set up the markets
(i.e. put out the bins, erect the gazebos and put out the tables and chairs)
. He has also donated a copy of his magazine
to our raffle prize every week and is always smiling
as he walks around the market and chats to Rotarians,
 stallholders and customers.
Sean has become a member of our “market family”.

In making the presentation,
Carolyn stated that Sean is a great asset to our market family
and demonstrates the spirit of Rotary.

Rotary Club of Wongan Hills
On Wednesday, December 3rd, the Rotary-Kanyana 2014
Senior Citizen’s Christmas Dinner was held in the Wongan Hills Civic Centre.
While the local Rotary Club is the organizer of the event,
volunteers from many different service clubs
and other organizations in town, join hands together
to make this wonderful event a reality each year.
I was told by someone this week at a function
I was attending, that not long ago Wongan Hills
had the highest volunteer numbers per capita
than anywhere else in Western Australia.
Once again this event makes that bit of information plausible.
Whatever room you looked into at the Civic Centre that day,
there were volunteers bustling about all coming together
as one team to serve a special group in our communities.
Whether by private car or bus, seniors and carers
came from many different towns;
Calingiri, Ballidu, Goomalling, Dowerin, Yerecoin
and of course, Wongan Hills

MC Doug Basham, with beaming smile as usual, kept the

program running smoothly

The Wongan Hills ‘Watts’ theatre group had us in stitches

Serving entrees which Jan Sew-ell had created and tested with various people before the big event.

Thank You!
The local Rotary Club wishes to thank all the many volunteers
who came again in the busiest time of the year,
to make this a special event for a very special senior citizens.
Without the goodwill, effort and skills of so many,
this would not have been possible.
The Rotary Club of Wongan Hills
wishes you all a very blessed Christmas and New Year.

Rotary Club of Karrinyup
Several members of the Rotary Club of Karrinyup
attended the conclusion of a Bronze Surf Lifesaving Award
examination at the Trigg Island SLSC
and presented the education team with
a new Oxy-Viva portable resuscitation unit.

RC Karrinyup President Carolyn spoke of the long-standing
and close relationship of the Rotary Club and Trigg Island SC
stretching back over some 37 years.
Rotary recognises the fine work and service
that surf lifesaving provides
to the local community.
The Club has supported the surf club in many different ways over
the years providing rescue vehicles and equipment.
In past years the surf club has also provided first aid service
for the Annual Rotary Community Fair
and provides training to those inbound exchange students
wishing to undertake a surf bronze.
Many of the surf club’s young members have been selected
to participate in Rotary youth exchange
and leadership programs at both high school and young adult level.

Trigg Island Club President Paul, who accepted
the new equipment on behalf of the club,
expressed his gratitude and thanked the Rotary members
 for their generous contribution. -

It was lovely for Erik to meet some fellow young Estonians.
Nele and Lauri have been in Australia around three years and are loving it here

Always fun to see how the ties made on Exchange endure.
Recently Heather, 2001 Rotary Club of Wanneroo
Outbound to Estonia, was able to get back to visit her past host family
 (whose younger son, Erik, was then just a 4 year old;
but is now on exchange here in Perth -
Pictured here with host parents Maris and Aivar-Erik,
 and Host brother Rando
(Who also travelled here and was hosted by Scarborough Rotary)
, Heather says "It was great and a bit surreal going back.
Estonia has changed so much as a country.
It's part of the EU now, and trendy and modern
. But my families were the same: loving and welcoming.
And it was awesome to take my husband there,
introduce him, and give him insight to that season of my life.

FREMANTLE ROTARY AND FREMANTLE CITY
SPONSORS LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY ON LEEUWIN

The Fremantle Rotary Club has sponsored
a place on the Leeuwin for many years
and has enjoyed the stories that have been told to us
 from the very grateful recipients.
Most of our adventurers have been students from Clontaff .
This year we broke a tradition and joined with the City of Fremantle
to sponsor SavannahAiken, a student from John Curtin College of the Arts.
She will join three other local youths who were awarded full scholarships
by the City of Fremantle to participate in a seven-day leadership
adventure aboard the STS Leeuwin II.

Congratulations to Past Presidents Joe Kalajzich and Graham Sampson
and Rotarian Barry Porter for being caught on candid camera

And a jolly good time was had by all as members
sang Christ-mas carols this week for the residents
of Thomas Scott Amana Living in Camillo.

Some Rotarians did their singing seated at the tables
with the elderly residents, whilst the more extrovert formed
the “Armadale Rotary Choir” and led the joyous singing
of Christmas carols and old-time favourites.
Rotarian Graham Boyle sang a couple of very impressive solo-pieces
 and Rotarian Rob Curtin-Sinclair
did an impromptu Frank Sinatra impersonation.
